Our group is all girls. 2 adults & 3 kids. We have travel bugs for each in the group and have a "race" in progress. Although, only one travel bug out of four is still alive and well out there, we enjoy seeing where it has travelled. All of the kids have been asking about going cache hunting again with the warm weather. So it looks like another Geo-trip is in the works for the gals! The boys go fishing, so the girls go geocaching.

Hi Conoways! Sounds like you have it pretty much covered with that list! Our group consists of avid wildlife watchers so we also carry with us a field guide for birds and animals. Along with a trusty pair of binoculars. Happy Hunting!

Excellent idea! I find myself always saving the Altoids tins, only to have a huge stack of them and not knowing what to do with them. Even if it isn't dropped off in a cache, its a good item to have handy in a backpack. We have 4 in our team that geocache full time. and 2 that are "part-timers" for our team. Age 2, 11 & 14 for the part-timers and 8, 9, 36 & 39 for us regulars. "Be who you are and say how you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind" - Dr. Seuss

Kids make up most of this geocaching group. We started off with easy caches at first. Taking only 2 of the kids at that time. They loved it since they were finding "treasure". (One only goes because she wants MORE toys and the other discovered that she likes seeing new places and really could care less about the trinkets) Word spread amongst the neices and nephews about how fun it is to go geocaching. Now I am looking at buying a mini-van so I can haul up to 5 kids around. Ugh... I never thought I would see the day that I would be even THINKING of buying a mini-van. The things I will endure for this sport. As a rule, if the kids want to go geocaching, they have to bring along a plastic bag and pick up litter on the way out. I'm hoping that this will help them learn to care about our parks, wildlife, etc. So far it seems to be doing the trick. They now ask questions as to why people leave thier trash everywhere. I second the concern that Button's made. Anytime I have seen shows that talk about Geocaching, they leave out the part of TRADING items. So every yahoo out there that hasn't heard of the sport, will think they walk away with something that they can retire on. I have had to explain to people that there are not any gold bars, jewels or large stashes of cash hidden away with clues posted on the internet on how to find these things. I work for a photographer and he has a whole bunch of film stored in the freezer. The disposable camera should be fine with the cold. I would make sure to retrieve the camera before summer hits though. I had the film melt in one after being left in the car during the summer. It wasn't pretty. We love geocaching because: 1. We get to see new places that aren't on a lot of maps. A great excuse to go explore new parks. 2. Educational for the younger ones in the group. 3. Exercise for the old people in the group. 4. The adventure and challenge of finding the cache! And competing against my fellow team mates to see who can spot the cache first. 5. One of my co-workers discovered that I was into geocaching. The quoted response was this: "Oh my God, you aren't into that... are you?" Gee, do you detect a bit of disapproval or is it just me? Uh.. yeah.. and frankly I enjoy it much more than hanging out in the local coffee shop discussing the latest trendy bands, clothes and a big fat cup of mocha-choca-latte stuff. I don't care if geocaching makes me look nerdy, outdoorsy, or whatever. I like it, i have fun doing it and anyone who has a problem with geocaching can kiss my GPS! Placing CD's in a cache sounds like a great idea. I ended up getting stuck with about 50+ CDs from a friend's band. Of course the band has been broken up for years now so passing out their CDs as freebies would sure help clean out some closet space as well. Too bad I never get enough vacation time to get to all 50 states. We have only one state logged so far but there are 5 travel bugs that we have sent out to cover all 50 states. The duck pond gang members each have their own TB and we are "racing" to see whose bug gets all 50 states first. We haven't placed a cache yet but have one almost ready to go. We decided on a theme type of cache that has only keychains in it. (And of course, some extra trash bags for the trek back) I know keychains aren't exactly the most creative thing to place in a cache but we figured that everyone has at least one keychain they don't use (or like) that they are willing to trade out. I am glad to see others out there doing the same. It only takes one bad apple to give this sport a bad name. BTW, I love the idea with the film cannisters and stickers. Try re-saving your photo in an application like photoshop. I had trouble with photos that came directly from the camera without any alterations. If you re-save it using something else, it may clear up any of the unfriendly info embedded in the picture. That has been my experience with it in the past. I hope that works for ya! Good deal BigRed. Our plan is to start leaving a few bags in caches that we find. Of course, remember to actually BRING the bags is a whole different matter. But its a start. Hopefully if more people start doing this, Geocaching might become more acceptable with the National Park folks. Hello fellow Geocachers! One of the things I have noticed while going on hunts is all of the trash that people leave in our parks and scenic places. It was suggested to me by one of the kids that we should put plastic grocery bags in caches so that people can follow the Geocaching motto of "Cache in and Trash out". On the last hunt we hauled out a bag full of odds and ends that were left behind by inconsiderate people. Mostly stuff like candy wrappers and kleenex, but trash is trash. Howdy! 2 female geocachers here with 2 neices along for the hunt. A 4-pack of wild women! One of us found the geocaching site by accident and it has just snowballed from there. The kids love it! Always anxious to see what kind of goodies others leave behind. A great way to teach kids to follow directions AND share. We are hooked.
