  1. Just as the GPSr gets uneasy about caches hidden with a map and compass, I would be uneasy about a projection made with only a GPS. A simple $15 compass will do this job. What is the accuracy of a $15 compass? What is the accuracy of a GPS with on-board compass? I've compared the reading on my old Vista with on-board compass and it reads the same as my $49 Suunto base plate compass and both are probably at least a degree inaccurate. (What's the accuracy of the newer Vista HCx?) I would agree with your statement if you have a GPS without on-board compass. The bottom line is that the GPS is inaccurate as to your current location and projected location by 10-20 feet anyway. Then the compasses (no matter what type you use) are a degree off. Add the fact the the hider or the finder if you're the hider is using different equipment with its own inaccuracies. Getting fractions of degrees is moot.
  2. OK I ordered the 350 from Amazon for 369.54. They didn't charge shipping or taxes. Hope my wife likes it. I didn't get the 360 Bluetooth because her car syncs with bluetooth cellphones already. I think she's really going to be surprised when she gets it. Thanks all for your input. Alan
  3. Cacheoholic: That is a 350 you're talking about? Also, can you type in coordinates to the Nuvi 350 and navigate too?
  4. Can you tap the cache icon and do a "go to" so you can navigate to it?
  5. I'm thinking about getting a Nuvi 350 for my wife for voice commands for driving. When she's not using it, I will for both driving and for spotting cacne locations. Can I load waypoints for off rooad in woods? Will it accept coordinates for waypoints? How about waypoints created by GSAK? Is there a way to transfer. There's a program from Garmin that allows computer transfers but not enough details. Another model better? Thanks Alan
  6. Barometric altimeter readings were even more important with older models of GPS's without the "x" or Sirf Star III chip. Older receivers often lose the sats in foliage, but the barometric capability would allow them to continue to provide data. That and the ability to predict weather. Also, people using Garmin's Jumpmaster program perfer the quicker updates of altitude with barometric units when they jump out of airplanes for obvious reasons.
  7. That's pretty much what I did on a series of multis that required a lot of text preparation that I wanted all 8 published at the same time. I explained the situation and reserved the final coordinates weeks ahead although the reviewer asked me to keep publishing to a couple of weeks after reserving. I was up to 3,4 in the morning writing up and subnmitting the final caches pages. Funny thing happened on one of them where I hid the container a month before publishing. The FTF real cacher was not the first. A NYC sanitation worker on a mushroom hunt came across the ammo can hidden well inside a tree trunk, logged in, left some union literature, and re-hid the container. What a nice guy!
  8. Have you tried taking your stylus and dragging it over that area. It works for me. The text is white on the white background so you don't see it unless you want to. Hey that's pretty neat. I didn't know that. thanks. The way I've been using it is to hold the stylus on the cache line before you open the page. Then click on "Show Hints" when the menu appears.
  9. I messed around with it again. It seems they show with 455 caches, MLP file 56.4K (that's 29 mile radius from home). When I go to 30 mile I get 478 caches (file is 59.4K) and those do not show but they do appear in the Show Locations in the Maplet section and will show individuall on the map when I select. I messed around with the memory/program slider settings - no difference. An old mapopolis file with 63kb (do not know how many caches, however, shows OK. Most strange. Ideas?
  10. Congrats Mark to a guy who's been really helpful and encouraging in my own cache hides. Alan
  11. Everyone else in the world should pay fees to help support the cost of keeping the system up there.
  12. I create these using gpxtomaplet from gpx files created by GSAK. I have changed settings so that might be problem. The icons do not show on the map regardless of zoom, however, if I click on Maplets, Show Locations, and select one, that one shows. It seems that the maplets are in tMapopolis in the PPC, its just that the icons do not show on the maps. A few weeks ago, some didn't show based on mileage from home coordiantes. That problem never went away before this new [problem came up. Don't know if these problems are related. I've reloaded the program into PPC. Any ideas? tks Alan
  13. OK That did it. I just had to move the map files into the TPO_DATA folder. They were all in the same folder before. Thanks all. Alan.
  14. I had to re load all my programs after re-installing WIN XP. I loaded NG Topo main disk and other map regions into a folder in the C drive then installed NG Topo from there. However, the program is still looking to read the 24K topo maps from the CD drive. What am I doing wrong? Tks Alan2
  15. Parks here in NYC have no closure signs that I recall. The government here has no regulations regarding caching or no dogs allowed for that matter. Pretty Liberal! Well, NYC is kind of a 24 hour town. Then again you probably wouldn't want to enter some of these city parks at night - at least not alone. Not unless you'd want to secure that FTF or gay or just plain nuts!
  16. Transfer all the waypoint from GPS to Mapsource. Edit the waypoints in Mapsource deleting what you don't want or whatever. Then delete all 1000 waypoints in the Vista. Tansfer the waypoints from Mapsource to Vista.
  17. Now I can't find my PPC Mapopolis CD and I need maps for my vacation. So, 1. Is anyone willing to sell theirs? 2. What program like Mapopolis is available that you overlay caches like using gpxtomaplet and use it in the woods a secndary benefit of Mapopolis? Tks Alan
  18. In honor of Independence Day today, here are eight 1776 revolutionary battle caches in 4 of the 5 boroughs of NYC. 1776 Revolutionary War caches in NYC
  19. National Geographic Topo which would be loaded on his laptop has a feature that converts tracks to routes. He would connect his GPS to his laptop, download the tracks to NG Topo, convert the track to a route, and upload the route's waypoints to the GPS. Then he follows the route in his GPS. NG Topo allows conversion in three ways: 1. A waypoint every mile. 2. Free hand style that reflects the way the track was at the "slight" turns. You select the quantity of waypoints you want. 3. Equal distance between waypoints. You select the quantity of waypoints you want. The program than places those equidistant from each other. I've found that #2 is the best as it picks the spots where you would be turning a little or a lot. You can pick the max quantity of waypoints for a route that your GPS allows. For example, 50 waypoints if that the max. Although for shorter tracks, that actually may be too many waypoints - clutters up the screen. NG Topo allows you to prefex the waypoints. For example, ROUTEA or TARGETD. Then if you selected 20 waypoints, the Route's waypoints would be labelled ROUTEA-1 through ROUTEA-20 or TARGETD-1 through TARGETD-20 or F1 through F20 whatever name you like. Or it will asssign the number if no prefix selected such as 001-020. A second route would start at 021 through 040. NG Topo allows real time tracking on your laptop or with NG Pocket Topo, you can load their maps into a Pocket PC (PPC) and real-time track on the PPC. Send me your email if you'd like me to forward some screens shots. Edit: NG Topo state series has to be bought state a a time. Howwver, the routing feature should work regardless of the state you have in case you're out in another state. You just won't seee the 24K topo maps. Alan
  20. I just checked their web page and they now say you can do 70 washings.
  21. I've been using "Buzz Off" brand Permethrin impregnated clothes. Pricey, but they're good for 30 washings and I haven't seen any ticks on me after 16 washings. I figured that the alternative with the two week cans, the cost offset proabbly works out to about the same cost, so it seemed easier to just try the Buzz Off. So far I'm happy. I use the Buzz Off pants, sirt and socks. I even got a Buzz Off hat although I don't use that most of the time. I've also gotten no mosquito bites without using Deet, but maybe that's coincidence. I'm thinking of cutting up an extra shirt and tailoring it to fit my dog. He still picks up the ticks.
  22. Take a DVD of Alfred Hitchcock's movie Lifeboat, a WWII B&W taut movie about 6 Allied survivors of a U-boat torpedo sinking that wind up with the capitan of the U-boat aboard after the sub sinks too. What will make it appropos to your cruise is that while you have a GPS telling you exact direction and speed , they were all drifting around the ocean, slowly dying, while trying to figure out their bearing to safety. There's a very interesting navigation twist that I won't tell you about though so not to spoil it, but I can't of a better place to watch this movie than with your method of travel. : Bon voyage!
  23. Phew! I thought it was me again!
  24. I use Sirf Star III in a Pocket PC using Mapopolis program. I've noticed that happens sometimes with what you're decribing and I've compensated by stopping the GPS acquisition and then turning it back on. I do this specifically when hiding a cache to get a more accurate reading for the coordinates. Just curious. How do cachers who hide with 60cs's and other Sirf Star III receivers handle this? Do they find similar problem?
  25. Charter members were promised additional no-cost perks and benefits as the company grew for providing support early on. Don't know if they ever got anything though.
