  1. None of the maps match each other. They are all wrong. The streets are drawn where the streets aren't. Even betwen Mapsource Topo and Street for example. They're close but never exact. It's the nature of mapmaking. If you creat a waypoint and cut and paste from one map to another, the waypoint will never be on the same spot from map to map. The coordinates haven't changed, the maps have! Alan

You can open any number of Mapsource files (existing and new)and cut and paste waypoints, tracks, maps and routes among them. What's really neat if you had copied Topo and Roads and Recreation onto you hard drive, is you can split screen the monitor and display a topo map on top and streets map on the bottom at the same time as you create routes and waypoints for example. Then cut and paste into one or the other, and you tansfer the whole thing to the GPS and save the file. Alan How? When I try to open a new set of waypoints, it replaces the set I already have open. & I don't seem to be able to cut & paste between multiple instances of mapsource Spog You cannot open it from the already opened program because as you found out it will want to clear the curent data. What you have to do is open a completely second (or third,) Mapsource program from the Windows Programs section like you opened it the first time. Another way is to double click on a saved Mapsource file. Each time yo do that another Mapsource program opens up. The "split screen" is created from the Windows tool bar at the bottom not with the Mapsorce program display. Once you have two Maps opens, right click on the Windows bar in a blank area and left click "Tile Windows Horizontally" What I have is one file called Caches found, another caches open, another caches not found, another for special or individual caches, etc. Another trick is that you'll get better printouts of maps from the Windows Paint program then from just printing from the normal Print button in Windows. Once you have what you want to print on the screen, hit the Print Screen key on the keyboard. Open Windows Paint from the Accessories page. Hit Edit, Paste, File and Print Once Paint is opened, eac time you click Print Screen, you can Paste to Paint and Print th new screen shot. Good luck Alan
  4. You'll also find that when tracking in your car, the track does not align with the steet either on the Mapsorce map. And if you switch between topo maps and street maps there is even further difference. This is another factor that maps are different from one to the other since no mapmaker that I know of has ever made a map that actually aligns with the street and topography as it actually is. You'll notice this when you creat a waypoint in Mapsource on your PC. If you create one at an intersection in Streets and then switch to Topo, the waypoint will no longer be in the intersection. In hasn't actually moved - the coordiates of the waypoint is still the same. It's just that the map "moved". I imagine (although I cannot verify because I don't have, that third party maps will "shift" the waypoint as well. Again it only appears that way. Alan
  5. quote:Originally posted by the tapir: Heaven forbid a company should *charge* for a service they offer! The greedy swine! BTW, does this have something to do with geocaching? the tapir Ok. I'll rise to the bait. Yahoo does charge - their advertisers, banners and all that. The advertisers hoped to sell their products to you the "free" user. Yahoo couldn't make enough money from the advertisers so they're charging the end user. Just like braodcast TV (what's that?). You know those things with rabbit ears. For years people watched all their favorite programs - all for free courtesy of the advertisers. And geocaching.com is now operating like Yahoo did to a certain extent. By adding value to the site with "free" caches and intellectual content to the forums by non-paying cachers, geocaching.com can sell upgrades for members only caches and other features. Without "free" caches, how many would stay around long enough for the upgrade? It will be interesting to see what happens if it eventually follows what Yahoo is doing now. Will people who use geocaching.com because it is "free" switch in the same way people are now doing with Yahoo? Alan

  8. P.S. If you're feeling "guilty" about getting more than one coin, then don't hunt any more and leave the rest to others. Where did you say these were located? Alan

  10. Go fer it! If he wants to give away rare coins in a "high value" cache, why do you want to take his pleasure away from him. Obviously he enjoys doing it. As long as he notes on the web page his intentions of a one "find" cache so everyomne is aware, I don't see a problem with it. Maybe a one-time icon can be provided by Jeremy. Alan

  13. Metroguide uses a lot more memory that R & R because of the routing feature and all the telephone numbers and street locating features. Consider which unit you're going to buy in the equation. Alan
  14. I hid a cache here last month http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=14514 Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, NYC houses the New York Police helicoptor squadron and a Coast Guard unit but the field is under the Interior Dept and is managed as an NRA. It has radio controlled hobby airplanes club. I noticed a lot of trash, broken down obsolete hangers, etc. where I hid my cache about 100 feet from an decommissioned runway so it's not exactly Yosemite. Having said all that, the question remains, is my cache "verboten" or not? I raised the issue to Jeremy after I placed it and he said to check with the land manager. I called and couldn't get through to the right person and haven't had a chance to follow up again. Any ideas? (hate to pull it - Stayfloopy (who else) was the first and only one to post a find.) Alan

I composed a haiku above that has 3-5-5 syllables before I was informed about the 5-7-5 "requirement". But my 3-5-5 haiku felt good and conveyed a spiritual feeling notwithstanding the "rule". And I thought that Japanese is pretty different than English. The 5-7-5 might better fit the cadence of the Japanese language. Not knowing anything previously about Haiku I searched and found that in fact there are many variations -especially in English because of this. Japanese does have a different configuration that the 5-7-5 fits. English uses less syllables to convey the same message. A 3-5-3 might be better. There are many other variables. See http://www.ahapoetry.com/haiku.htm#comego for areally interesting discussion on this. Thanks godzirra for starting this topic. I think I can really get into this stuff. Thanks Alan

  18. Check your Mapsource total megs used in your PC to see how much memory you have left over when using Metro to give you an idea of much space you have left for Topo. Mapsource topo uses 2.1 MB for an area roughly 85 miles west and 70 miles south of Norfolk (9 maps). That should give you a idea. I live in NYC and don't use Metro even though I have a Vista with 24 MB. I understand for my metro area one would need something like 12MB without routing (Legend or Vista)and 16 MB with routing (Garmin V). I do use both Topo and Roads and Recreation at the same time. Even though topo is 1:100,000 and I carry 1:24,000 paper topos, it's nice to see in the GPS the waypoints and where you are relative to the geography. Even though contour lines are less than in 1:24,000, you still see railroad tracks, streams, off road trails (some obsolete) which helps locating oneself. Plus its another toy to play with Alan
