  1. I wish I could help you, but you could always put the coordinates in manually.
  2. Well, we have 3 stories now: 21 seconds, 21 minutes, and the latest one from 12:30am to 3pm. Which is it?
  3. I've only geocached in Arlington one time as my brother lives there. Try the Texas Geocaching Association user forums, you may get more responses: TXGA I don't know if UTA has a Geology department, but that may be a good place to look. Good luck
  4. As far as I understand, yes. You will need to get the Garmin City Navigator in order to have auto-routing on your unit. There is a way to add CN and your Topo maps to Mapsource so that you can get ALL of your maps on the same MicroSD card, but someone else can probably explain it better than I can.
  5. I came across an unused (still in plastic) porno mag at a GZ a couple of weeks ago. I confiscated it....to protect the kids
  6. Yeah, there's nothing special about it. I'll leave it for now to see if anyone else wants to find it, but when I get ready to move I'll probably just remove and archive it.
  7. Thanks for the responses. My cache has been out there for a month and only one person has found it. I guess I have a year to see if more people will come to it. It's in a semi-rural area about 30 minutes outside of Dallas. I may hold off on planting any more since I know I'll be moving and likely not returning to this area. I don't want to place a bunch of caches thus blocking other people from placing in the same area knowing that I'll be leaving in the near future. Just doesn't feel right.
  8. I plan on leaving town for grad school this time next year. I have only planted 1 cache and am holding off on planting more until I get this question answered: When I get ready to leave town, should I archive my cache(s) or find someone to adopt it/them?
  9. I'm still pretty new to geocaching, but if I was approached by a muggle I prolly wouldn't hesitate to share the sport with them. Now I WOULDN'T show them where the cache was cuz you never know, but I think it's a great way to show our sport to the uninformed. A couple of weeks ago I was approached by a Sheriff muggle and I was happy to describe the sport to him. His eyes kinda glazed over when I mentioned the internet but after running my driver's license he went on his way. Now the next time he comes up on a geocacher he may not be so suspicious, who knows, he may decide to start geocaching himself.
  10. Sounds almost too good to be true, but I just ordered a MicroSD card reader/writer off ebay for $1.98 + free shipping. It supports USB 2.0 and 1.1 and an SD card up to 8G. Almost all of them were that price so I just picked one.
  11. As a relative noob, most of my many DNFs are micros and for a while I typically avoided them. But this past week I went to an area full of micros. I searched for 8 caches and one was a regular tupperware dish, one was a decon container, 2 were matchstick holders, and the rest were Bison tubes. I don't know if it's because I'm getting better or what, but I found all of them and had quite a bit of fun in the process. I'm with the folks that say if you don't want micros then hunt for bigger caches. And if you want to increase the number of larger caches then plant some yourself. All I know is that I try to enjoy every cache and am slowly becoming less intimidated by micros. In fact, once the weather cools off a bit I'm going to start avenging my DNFs and find those rascally micros that I've missed
  12. Oh, I see. So the card reader is a separate device made for data transfer to and from the SD card. Thanks, man.
  13. ***DO NOT REPLY TO THIS THREAD, IT IS DUPE POSTED WITH ANOTHER THREAD***[/size] Here's the link to the other thread: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=229863 Thanks jmundinger, I was actually thinking about loading City Navigator along with the GPSFileDepot topo map of the entire state of Texas. DeadHead answered my question as I accidentally dupe posted this thread.
  14. Thanks DeadHead. What is a "card reader"? Is that what MapSource is? So I guess I get the City Navigator DVD, upload the file to MapSource on my computer, then send both maps to my device. Sounds simple enough. Thanks again
  15. When I was 13/14 my family was big into cycling. I would go out on 20-25 mile trips by myself all the time. The difference was that I always wore a helmet, carried 2 bottles of water with me, and always let my parents know the exact route I was taking. Other than that, I think good advice has been given in this thread. Whether you realize it or not, I'm sure your son is proud of his accomplishment. I agree with the folks who say you should sit down and have a talk with him about wearing a helmet and letting you know where he's going. I used to think wearing a helmet was so dorky until I got in a wreck and flew over my handle bars landing on my head (I was wearing a helmet)....they didn't seem so dorky after that
  16. I have another thread that has gone OT from the OP (http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=229700) Towards the end of the thread we get into how many map files my unit supports. AFAIK the base map is the only map that can go into my unit's memory. For this reason I got a 2G MicroSD card and downloaded the entire state of Texas Topo from GPSFileDepot. Will I be able to download City Navigator onto the same MicroSD card or will it write over my topo map?
  17. I already have the entire state of Texas Topo map from GPSFileDepot on a 2G MicroSD card. Can I download City Navigator to the same card without writing over the current topo map or do I need a separate MicroSD card? Keeping track of 2 SD cards would be a PITA
  18. The Vista HCx is capable of autorouting and turn by turn directions if you have the right maps that include the data for that. Garmin's City Nav would work. GPSfiledepot does have some routable maps for download but only for limited areas. I have only played around with them once. Cool! I knew the Vista had a highway mode, but didn't know it was capable of turn by turn navigation. I'll look into that. Right now I can't afford the $100 for CN, but maybe in the near future. Thanks.
  19. I'm still a noob, but lately I've found myself walking the opposite direction back to my car just so I can drive to the next cache in a series.
  20. Do you know anybody that works at a school? They usually have those giant laminating machines. When I was a kid my mom was a teacher and I'd play with the laminating machine for what seemed like hours.
  21. Do you use City Navigator? I only have a GPSFileDepot topo map which has more streets than the map that came with my GPS. The problem is, I don't think my GPS (Garmin etrex Vista HCx) has turn-by-turn navigation in order to get to the actual geocaching site. Most of the time I find myself traveling to somewhere I've never been before. I thought about getting a Mapsco book, but I live so far out of Dallas that I don't think any of the places I go to will have maps to get to them. ALT + PrtSc, gotcha - I'll try that too. Haven't tried Yahoo maps, but I have found Mapquest to occasionally be more accurate than Google Maps. Thanks
  22. I noticed you can't print the maps from the GC website whenever searching for caches. Something I've started doing is printing a Mapquest map of the area I'm going to and just using a pen to mark where the caches are. For me, Mapquest seems more accurate with street names than Google Maps. What say you?
