  1. https://www.geocachingstuff.com/LogSheets/Small_Log_Sheets.pdf found my own answer.
  2. Need to print new logs. is there a link? Thanks!
  3. Hi, I tried searching for this and I failed. I'm renewing my account and starting to cache again and have some maintenance to do on old hides. I'd like to know where the 'you found a geocache page is to print and put in my hides? They used to have a generic page I could print saying this is a geocache and please put it back if you found it by mistake? I can't seem to find it on the new website. Thanks in advance. ssterling
  4. How many logs does that give you per cache? Edit: Thinking about it, I guess you could guess them all. I don't have easy access to any such privileged application, so I don't consider API to be an option. I don't have GSAK either. I doubt the google thing will work. I was hoping to do a query in a say 2-5 mile radius and include kepwords from logs. Just something I'd wished for when at a location in the past. oh well... maybe they will add it later.
  5. The bolded part above isn't correct. The new API does allow you to download "lots of logs for a lot of caches". GSAK V8 has the "Get Recent Logs..." option under the Geocaching.com Access menu. You can then use the "Full Text Search" on the Set Filter dialog to search for text within logs. Thanks.
  6. I am looking for a way to query for caches that have a log with a word or 2 in it? maybe I want to look for one on a lake that a cacher logged they had to 'swim' out? Or that they dropped a 'sig item', or look for the word 'fun' just as examples.
  7. I did not see a way to view other cachers favorites list? I'm just curious if this is possible?
  8. I got a fake Rock container! Very cool! I also got a small backpack for my geocaching 'stuff' as the kids buckets of Swag trade were getting too full of Dad's stuff!
  9. I think that 'favorites' doesn't have to mean the best cache in the world? It can just be Caches you enjoyed for any reason? Some of the 'favorites' I picked were not anything more than a nicely placed ammo can on a pretty hike? Or a well cammoed container in an urban setting? I don't think you should be able to use more than one favorite point on any one cache? another post said this: 'If you'd really like to use all your points, maybe you could use the term "favorite" a bit less literally.' I agree... pick some caches you enjoyed, or brought you to an interesting spot/view...
  10. a few comments to add, but looks like tons of good advise already... 1. Always log a DNF. IF it is missing it is the only way the Cache owner would know without going to check. It is also expected on more difficult hides. It seems many caches don't want to log them, and it is really unfortunate if they don't. 2. When starting out go for the low difficulty larger finds. This is a great way to get some finds under your belt. get to GZ and look around in a 10-20 foot range from there and think 'where would I hide a container that is sixe X'... the description and hint, and previous logs always help while there if you need them! Have fun!!!
  11. I'm just wondering how good it is? Says it has paperless cacheing?!? We are going to replace our GPS for the car and saw this one at Costco.com ($199) and figured we'd have a backup gps for geocaching! (or use one each while looking) wondering if it is decent? Thanks!
  12. I'm a newbee too, and just did a ton of research the past few weeks and ended up buying the PN-40 (at REI and until the 25th you get $100 rebate, plus the 10% back at the end of the year)... Price is $399 though up front. I was looking at the garmin etrex vista hcx, which you can find used for under $200, and it seemed a good choice. this was a utube video on it: I'm MORE than happy with the PN-40. It is paperless and we have found it to be great so far. Good luck...
  13. At REI I saw they were putting this unit on Clearance. Think it was $229?
  14. I hope that the wiki TotemLake directed you to will answer most of your map questions--ask away if there's something specific you're wondering about. As to these other questions, you cannot upload cache comments, but if you have the latest firmware you can create field notes when you find a cache that you can upload later to gc.com to log your finds there. There was an advantage to running maps in internal memory on the PN-20 because they loaded faster, but the difference on the PN-40 is very slight if anything. Because it's faster to transfer maps to SD memory than internal, you probably would be best off starting there. I ended up using internal memory for my immediate area--the maps I use most frequently--while using the SD card for my extended area and "temporary" map files. If you end up using the Navionics inland waters maps, you have to use their SD card--requiring you to use internal memory for any additional maps you may want to use. Thanks. I'll keep playing with it. Lots to learn!!! 4 caches found already!!! How did we not know about this years ago. Amazing free fun once you have the GPS...
  15. I bought a PN-40 over the weekend and so far we love it. already found 3 caches! I thought I had loaded the topo map of my area onto it, but I think I'm only looking at the basemap? What is the trick to looking at different maps of the same area? Also if I edit the comments of a cache, can I then upload those directly so I don't have to find that one again in www.geocaching.com ? Or are those editing notes just for me to see that I found it or not later? What is the difference between loading the maps to the Memory card vs the internal memory? any advantage to either? and how do I remove maps? etc? Thanks!!!
  16. Actually I found a eTrex Vista HCx for sale locally on Craigslist, and was considering buying that? ($175). Watching this video on utube: seemed pretty decent? What can't the eTrex Vista HCx do that the Oregon can for the extra $$ Thanks...
  17. THANKS! I'm trying to avoid 'buying a cheaper unit' and then having to purchase additional stuff after the fact, and wishing I'd of just bought the better GPS in the first place... so many options, and being a newbie, so I am trying to be informed...
  18. Thanks for the link. I'm still confused on why I would need additional maps? Some of these units come with some kind of basemap? So If I want a topo map, or street map specifically to see the same area, I'd have to load that? I think I'm going to try the used route to make sure this is something the family loves, and maybe even get one that would require paper to start and figure it all out. Sounds like a lot of fun, and this Fourm, and geocaching.com look like good communities. The Dakata 10 and PN-20 also looks decent for my needs? so many opinions in here on what os best... Will REI let me play with a demo unit of each? Thanks in advance...
  19. Sorry if this has been asked before. I'm trying to research to find a good GPS for geocaching. I want to be able to be paperless, but don't think I need all the 'extra's' of some of the high end units out there, and THINK the Oregon 200 will work for me. My main question is: It has a built-in basemap, but has 'options' to add on more through a microSD card? How much are these, and why do I need multiple maps? I'm a neebie sorry. Also anything glaringly wrong with the Oregon 200? Or should I start out with a similar unit that requires paper? like an etrex? So much information... Thanks in advance...
