  1. I was just reading the Zumo 550 manual, considering getting one, and I too was wondering if it was geocaching capable. The answer seems simple; the word "geocaching" isn't even IN the manual. I'd wager on "no". My buddy has a Nuvi and I looked long and hard through its UI trying to find something suitable for geocaching and couldn't find anything, so I'd say the Zumo is the same way. That sucks, I was hoping to do some geocaching on my motorcycle. =/ Now I can't, or else I need to carry two GPSrs and manage waypoints on both of them. What a PITA.
  2. I don't think it'll ever be "fixed" since I'm assuming that's how they want it. See, member caches are also included in the results, so if they gave you the exact location you could circumvent membership requirements to find member-only caches. This randomization of proximity to the actual cache site is put in there on purpose.
  3. I don't live there anymore, and rarely stop by, but for those of you who are in Colorado Springs here is the official word from the GOV. GEOCACHING GUILDELINES FOR CITY PARKS & OPEN SPACE AREAS I couldn't help but chuckle at the "Virtual caches are permitted" clause... Talk about freedom. We have the freedom to go somewhere that we heard about online. I'm overwhelmed with joy...
  4. I take that back. Working with a GPS on the Mac is still an infuriating experience. *sigh* Insanely frustrating...
  5. On the Geocaching.com site. HOLY HELL, where on earth was I when this came out and why don't they TELL you this stuff on the front page?? I've been sitting here writing perl scripts and scp'ing files to my linux box since GPS babel is giving me applescript errors. This plugin takes Geocaching to an entirely new level of ease, especially for we neglected Mac users!
  6. Hey i'm in high school I think they were referring to the adults, as if they've gotten any less mischevious after HS.
  7. I know this doesn't pertain directly to Geocaching with Garmin units, but it does relate to a shiny GPS app for Mac. The new Mac Mini is the size of a car stereo, and some people are modding their cars and installing them. A place in new york is even doing custom installations. It would be really sweet to see a Mac GPS application that you could use with a touch-screen interface or simple keyboard strokes that would also sync up your GPS. That way you could load your Geocaches on your in-car Mac Mini, or even a Mac laptop to take in the car with you, then have it drive you to the trailhead, at which point you could go out on foot with your handheld GPS. Obviously this has *huge* outside of Geocaching. What blows my mind is the GPS Vendors reluctance to support Mac. I e-mailed both Garmin and Magellan *again* yesterday and they both said "no plans." The first vendor to pull their head out of their a** and see the wide open, devoid of solutions Mac GPS market will capture the devotion that Apple is already well acquainted with.
  8. Arg, I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum... I'm sorry people.
  9. I've ordered from the Groundspeak shop twice so far and both times I've been less than impressed with the items I received. Does anybody else feel this way? I'm not saying I want my money back or that people shouldn't buy from the store, but honestly, out of the 6 items I've ordered only three, maybe four, of them are high enough quality that I'd consider them little more than a novelty, unless, of course, that was the intended case. For instance, I just got a lanyard, t-shirt, hat and microcache capsule. The t-shirt fits well, which was nice because the last shirt I bought was sewn so that the shoulders were all funky. The microcache capsule... well, it does it's job just fine... screws open and closed. This hat, like the first shirt, is also sewn kinda funky. It actually fits better if I turn it inside out, but then the back side of the logo shows up and it has all this thread hanging off of it and looks like the back of any embroidery would. The lanyard? Well, for $4 I suppose I shouldn't expect more, but it's not even sewn like a lanyard should be, but rather just a strap, which isn't how it appeared in the picture. Really, it's not sewn well at all. I'll probably just drop it off in a cache as a novelty item and go buy a lanyard that is a bit more elegant in it's function. So, do I just have bad luck or is this the expected quality of the merchandise in the Groundspeak store?
  10. i like your line of thinking, but it makes me realize i'm a poor man. the experience is goes somewhere between the gear and the items you've listed, so at least i've got that!
  11. but i'm not exactly the lobbyist... arg, it just makes no sense. this is so disappointing. i paid for my membership, then the legality issue came up, then all the fires. not to mention we can't participate in travel bug now. you'd think colorado would want geocaching as (even a minor) tourist attraction. but, i think many things that the gov doesn't agree with. at least we still have the beauty of the virtual cache, like the kitty cache, happy rocks, etc.. =)
  12. so, is it legal to geocache in colorado springs again? i haven't even gone geocaching since all this went down...
  13. quote:Originally posted by Acceptable Risk:YOU are asking the CITY if you, as a STRANGER can hide am AMMO BOX on THEIR property... ammo box? i've come across many tupperware containers that were even see-through. their property? who's taxes are paying for it? it's our property. stranger? i don't know what the current city population is but i'd say that 99% of the people in it are strangers to the people in charge.
  14. very nice points, 6, i appreciate your feedback and you are exactly right.
  15. reguardless of everything that has been said here, everybody except nubi is still missing the point. allowing geocaches does not present any extra liability. if i'm hiking while bird-watching and i hurt myself, then sue the gov they're not going to outlaw birdwatching because i happened to be birdwatching on my hike. the same with geocaching. i'm going to go hiking whether i'm geocaching or not, and if i happen to hurt myself it had nothing directly to do with geocaching.
  16. quote:Originally posted by CheesyD:...Just because you "cheated death" this time, what about the time when someone does get hurt (or claims to have been hurt) in the park? Are you saying that is an impossibility?... people get hurt doing all sorts of things. the point is that adding geocaching to the equation doesn't increase the risk any. in the case of somebody who's out to intentionally hurt somebody you're no better off, because reguardless of wether it's legal or not to leave a box that person is going to do it. so now you have a box that's not marked on a gps, but it doesn't matter because somebody is going to open it up, even if it has to be the park ranger who comes to remove it. so now you get the same results wether geocaching is factored in or not, so why bother preventing our obscure sport from continuing in public places? it makes no sense. i could maybe understand if somebody had ever been hurt in the area from something within their guidelines, but quite frankly, more people have been hurt opening their mailboxes and finding bombs in the last year, nobody was hurt from geocaching.
  17. you know, i reread my e-mail and i didn't find anything directly insulting. the only thing i found that was connotated towards insults is the fact that i find their decision ludicrous, which is the best word i can find to discribe it. as for immature, i don't think it's immature to speak my mind while conveying a valid opposing opinion. maybe if i'd called them names or something, but i stand behind what i said and don't think i was out of line. perhaps everybody else who geocaches likes to be pushed around, but i like to lead, not follow, and i like to make known the logically backed contrary views of decisions affecting my interests, reguardless of who made them. at least i'm not protesting with signs outside city hall. it was just an e-mail, and it was heated. i'm sure they've gotten worse flames about this decision, mine just happened to get posted.
  18. my friend eugene and i split some beef jerky from a cache. i don't see any reason not to eat anything from a cache, as long as it hasn't been tampered with.
  19. i'm sure it didn't help one ounce. however, neither have you...
  20. that is soooooo sick.... 55 gallons?? i mean... dadgum... 55 gallons...?
  21. i was irked with some of the driving directions that my gpsv gave me when i first started using it, but with more use i also saw that it was teaching me faster ways to get places, so i think it's a toss up. however, it hasn't told me to drive off a cliff yet so maybe i'm missing something... ;-)
  22. of course i'd like to come, and i don't mind paying the $5, but i don't know if i'll be able to make it. i'm not in the area very often... any idea when it would be?
  23. am i missing something? wait... clearly i am. what is it?
