  1. update: nevermind. I was wrong. send to gps is OK re- I'm sure you are aware but this happens with "Send to GPS" as well. I use PN-40. All I get is GC####, coords, and cache title. Bummer.
  2. Same problem here. PN-40 using Topo8 and/or cache-register. looking forward to a fix! "Send to GPS" worked OK. Relied on iphone to find caches today.
  3. Today was one of those days. Started with an FTF run for a P&G. DNF. Next went for another new P&G that was found earlier in the day. DNF. Tried my luck with one I had DNF'd previously. Now I'm 0/3. So tried a small container that was recently found. DNF, 0/4. So, I decided to go hide a cache instead. If you can't find 'em, hide 'em. Well, I found a great spot and submitted for review. While waiting, I was checking out aerial photos of the area and they were all under water! It appears the river floods the GZ periodically. GAH! Disabled the cache before it was published. I'm going to bed. Definitely, my worst caching day yet. ps. It turns out that FTF run was not found by anyone and the coords were updated. Going back for more punishment tomorrow!
  4. My 1st several outings in July '09. I think my 2nd day of caching was 0/6 in the rain. I didn't give up though! I still dnf easy ones but don't mind revisiting. I like to think I'm getting extra enjoyment out of the GZ.
  5. I've had the same thought about a hot sandwich in the cache! I've also thought about hiding-out at the cache site right after it was posted and take pictures of the FTF hounds to and post them on the cache page. ( ensuring their faces were hidden ) That gave me the idea to post a motion sensor camera near the cache. You know, one of those that hunters use. I figure for sure it would be found wily cachers though.
  6. Sounds like there is a puzzle cache in here somewhere!
  7. Great idea! As mentioned, you probably won't get a lot of finders but that wouldn't be the point, right? I think the point would be to teach us how to use this the very inventive method of locating the cache. This is very cool. I would spend hours trying to solve this one even if the cache was too far for me to find. For me even if it could be only found on certain dates like some sort of Stonehenge cache. That would be awesome! If you finish it, post the GC#. parknet
  8. I started with iPhone 3G in July. The Groundspeak Geocaching app is just awesome for paperless caching. I found my 1st 100 caches without too much trouble but I started to get frustrated with signal loss in the woods and short battery life (2 hours or so of use. ) I then borrowed a Garmin eTrex Legend C. That was a big step up in accuracy but I used the iPhone for the paperless part anyway. Both Motion-X GPS and the Groundspeak app are great. Go with a premium membership for geocaching.com and you can download pocket queries into Motion-X. You can get USB drivers and browser plugins for the Garmin from Garmin.com to push caches to the eTrex from the geocaching.com web site. . That is far better than typing them in but you might need to anyway if you find one on the iphone in the field and want to seek with the Garmin. Signal was way better with the eTrex but still crapped out under thick cover. I got my new Delorme PN-40 2 days ago and could not be happier with the accuracy and signal strength. I get 3D in my house and got it under the thick brush I was in today. The paperless caching works very well on the PN. My only complaint about the PN-40 is that they don't have hi-res aerial photo maps for Indianapolis. For the 122 cities they do have.. WOW. But none for me.. The regular aerial maps, sat maps, and 24k Topos are very, very nice tho. Just wish I had that Google or Bing map view on the PN but hey, the iphone is always in my pocket!
  9. Just chiming in. My Delorme PN-40 arrived yesterday. Paid $296 from Amazon. Well, add $30 bucks to that because the Map Subscription seems like a must-have to me. So yeah, I've used it almost every waking minute since it arrived. The accuracy is pretty amazing. I took a few quick hikes and compared the tracks to the map and to my borrowed Garmin eTrex Legend C. So.. Pretty thrilled in that area. I'm not going to go into all the features. The reviews I found online seemed very fair and accurate. Here's a bonus. The chip set is so great, this thing has a 3D signal on the 1st floor of my 2 floor house! My other 2 units often lose signal under trees so I'm guessing I'll be fine next time I'm in the brush. I think the conversation invariably will end up about the Topo 8 software. The variation of available maps is the reason I went with this unit vs. the Garmin 60csx. For some reason, the Oregon seemed great too but I didn't seriously consider it. So Topo 8. It is a serious pain the arse to use but I would not be able to design it better. It seems to do the task at hand pretty well. I am having troubles downloading in the tool (it fails entirely) so am using the work-around download URL they provide with the email you get when "ordering" a map. That issue is disappointing but I guess I can forgive that for some reason. All I have to do is click on the link and copy the files to the hard drive. Then transfer to the GPSr. My only real complaint is that they do not have HiRes aerial maps for my city (Indianapolis.) You know, Geocaching app and Motion-X GPS can do it on my iPhone, why not my 300 buck GPSr? I guess in some dream future version of this unit, it will have a wireless data connection and just get the maps you need as you need them. Enjoy. It seems that no choice is perfect as all the units have their own best-of features. Go with your gut and don't look back!
  10. There seems to be some cachers who solve all the hard puzzles and some (like me) who just don't get it. 2 weeks is not a long time tho. I have a simple multi here that has only had 2 finders in a busy area. They'll get to it. I like to assume they are saving mine for their 1000th find or something great like that. ;-)
  11. In response to the statement: "Ultimately when you post your smiley log to a cache page there is only one Logging Policeman who really matters ... and that policeman is you." I agree. I once got all flustered because I noticed a few log entries on the web site and was sure that person's name was not on the log sheets when I visited a few caches in the area that they had smiley's for. I was thinking, "I should report this guy to the CO." Then thought better of it. What do I care if they were there or not? I cache for me, no one else. Maybe they used invisible ink or something or they are a double amputee and have no arms to open the cache with.. Who knows. All I know is that I found the cache and went home happy. peace, ( yes, I'm a caching hippy. )
  12. I thought it was humorous that when checking on one of my caches last night that it took me 20 minutes to find it! Someone had hid it very well in a close but different location. I would not log that as a find but I certainly worked harder finding my own cache than probably 80% of my actual finds. I almost walked away thinking it got muggled but thought, no, there is no way someone found this one by accident. Then, I found it in a different spot. I didn't mind. It was fun!
  13. Just my 2 cents worth: I log every visit to a cache site. DNF if I looked, maybe a note if that seems more appropriate like if there were muggles or something. Like most cachers I know, I'm addicted and enjoy posting and reading log entries of any kind as well as the hunt. I hid a cache that I think is very hard. Only 2 people found it after a month and there are no dnf entries. I'm left wondering if anyone else tried or if they are 2 for 2. ok.. maybe that wasn't worth 2 cents.
  14. Since the police know that these sometimes turn out to be geocaches, then they might think to check geocaching.com to see if the ammo box or whatever it was is a published cache. I know, I know, a bomber could plant a bomb and publish it as a cache.. But just sayin, if it has been there a while and has the usual log entries, it probably is a valid cache.
  15. I'd do it and would compliment the CO for being unique! If I couldn't get the puzzle, I'd just have to return with my 9 year old who is much better than me at those kinds of things.
  16. Thanks for the quick replies! I submitted for review and made the suggested comments in the description. If interested you can see the cache after it is published: GC1YHJQ take care, (parknet)
  17. I just hid a cache and was thinking about it on the way home. I am 5' 9" and had to reach up to place the cache in its perch. Is this un-cool because shorter cachers and wheelchair cachers will need a tool to get to it? If too short, they should be able to see it but will need a reaching tool or something to stand on. I can move it but it is in such a great spot! Just wanted to collect some advice before submitting for review. Of course, I would put comments about this challenge in the description if I choose to go as-is but don't want to bum out our shorter cache-heads. thanks!
  18. I submitted a new multi the other day and figured it would take a few days to get published. To my surprise, the reviewer had it published in maybe 5 minutes! I must have caught 'em at just the right time.
  19. iPhone 3G. I use flip it over and use it as a hard surface to place the log on when signing. Or, if it is a notebook, just slip it into my pocket.
  20. I have thought about putting a magnetic nano stuck to the inside lid of a lamp skirt. I assume that almost everyone would think the container has gone missing unless someone finds it and puts a giveaway in the logs.
  21. 5 for me. 401 short of the the record. I'll get 'em next year, coach!
  22. The wife doesn't mind caching but doesn't that say it all? Doesn't mind, doesn't mind!??! I've only been doing this for a few months but have gotten to the point where I need my geofix every day or I can't sleep!
  23. I'm fairly new but use the iphone/geocaching app. When muggles are about, I just put the phone to my ear and start pacing like I'm deep into a call. People seem to think I'm a freak when walking around a park alone but when I'm on the phone, I'm just a guy on the phone.
  24. Someone complained about fishing lures. I think a fishing lure (packed so you don't get hooked) is good swag especially if said lure can be used near the cache. Imagine Colonel Blake from M*A*S*H out caching. He'd pop a lure off his hat and trade for a pin or something. Seems like it is in the right spirit to me. peace
  25. I get it. You know, I didn't even notice that you can change the date of the logged item. Duh. Thanks!
