  1. Looks like my kind of adventure! Unfortunately, I'm too far away. Good luck!
  2. The Flash presentation was based on my PowerPoint presentation. Instead of the PowerPoint one I would recommend downloading my Macromedia Authorware version (same presentation). It can be burned to a CD which will then play automatically when inserted into the CD drive. It was designed to be given out to park authorities when they ask about geocaching. It's about 5 MB and even includes cover art for the CD. You can make as many copies as you like. You can download it here.
  3. My philosophy is "make sure the cache has something cool in it before I leave". If it has something, great! If not, I will leave something.
  4. I'd like to see some sort of programmable operating system similar to some digital cameras. Then we could write (and share) small programs to do things that Garmin/Magellan won't write or didn't think of.
  5. Here in New England we are still playing! (Shameless plug) Check out the New England forums or here. No grand prizes (though Garmin did offer shirts and hats -- very nice of them).
  6. This may be a really dumb suggestion, but have you tried going into the menu and adjusting the contrast?
  7. I say pocket watch, but it's hard to tell from the photos. Why don't you send me one of each so that I can make an informed choice?
  8. Another way to mark a post as 'read' is from the main forum page. Click on the white flag that reads "new posts" next to specific forum you just read. Since you've finished reading a thread you are probably back here anyway.
  9. wimseyguy, Thanks for the post. I've often felt that the lives of constant complainers must be really crappy. Never happy about anything. Man, that sucks.
  10. On a recent trip to a GeoMeet I listened to three cachers (guys) discussing this exact issue. The first cacher said, "I told my wife that I was going caching whether she liked it or not. On the first day I didn't see any change. On the second day still no change. On the third day she printed out a cache page and told me to go ahead and have a good time." The second cacher chimed in, "I did the same thing. I told her I was old enough, and man enough, to go caching if I wanted to. On the first day I didn't see anything. On the second day still nothing. But on the third day she not only printed out a cache page, she made me a sandwich to take along." The last cacher jumped in with, "I told my wife that I was going caching and there wasn't anything she could do to stop me. On the first day I didn't see anything. On the second day I still didn't see anything. On the third day I could maybe see a little bit out of my left eye."
  11. When cachers first started referring to McToys they meant the broken, used ones. New ones in packages are always appreciated. When I first started in business someone told me that if you REALLY want to impress a CEO with a gift give him something for his kids (or 'her' kids as the case may be). So my trade items are always something that kids will enjoy, whatever their age.
  12. Would I buy it? No. But people buy millions of dollars of software that I consider lame. So, I won't fault the guy for trying to make a buck. It probably looks a lot like Jeremy's first attempt (and look what THAT has turned into).
  13. Garmin sponsored one a few years ago called The GPS Goldrush. It was held two years in a row at different ski areas (read: high mountains). Of course the best prizes (GPS, etc.) were at the tops of the mountains, but there were plenty of prizes to be had. I had a ball. They didn't do it this year, I hope they do it next year.
  14. Historical virtuals, like the ones mentioned above, may be in historical parks that do not allow traditional caches, so they can be and have been approved as virtuals. I recently visited two in Concord, Mass. They were interesting and great fun. Please do not blame TPTB on this one. Cachers were marking every historical marker they could find as virtuals. Some may have been interesting, but most were uninteresting, drive-up caches on the side of the road. If you really want to place these sorts of 'caches' there is always this site. Having said that, I do hope that virts get their own section as I feel it would be an interesting extension.
  15. Some of my favorite caches have been historical in nature, combining a nice walk or hike along with a bit of education.
  16. As far as I know there is only one kind and it is NOT for laser printers. Don't worry, if this paper gets wet it has no effect on the ink. I use it a lot.
  17. As far as quality, cold doesn't affect film (photographers store their film in the fridge). It can make the film a bit more brittle, so advance the film slowly when using a frozen disposable camera. Temperature changes DO affect film, as does heat. Consumer grade film takes this into account; pro grade film can't handle the heat and should be kept cold until needed.
  18. Ah, c'mon, every Martian I've ever met failed math. On the flip side, if we found these symbols on Mars, even though we don't speak Martian, we'd still try to decode them.
  19. I guess I've been doing this all wrong. We usually take cheese, crackers, apples, some wine, maybe some roasted chicken. Trail mix? Maybe if I was trying to survive. If we're out of town doing a cache we'll usually stop at a local restaurant after the hunt.
  20. A little Smurf history... "The Smurfs were created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo (Pierre Culliford). In 1958, they made their first appearance,..." "The first three Smurf figures appeared on the toy scene in 1965."
  21. How about combining blue, real person, and anime into one?
