  1. Yes, it has a waterproof seal. Impact resistant? You could drive a truck over it! Brand? Military surplus. It can be opened at either end (both have waterproof seals). Won't rust. Plenty of room. Holes for attaching a lock if you want to secure it. I buy them at any surplus store, right next to the metal ammo cans. Here's a photo of it opened, along with the micros for the clues. [This message was edited by geospotter on March 12, 2002 at 07:12 AM.]
  2. Martinp13, The two-part hint is a great idea. It will satisfy the most people - those who don't want a spoiler in the hint and those that may need a spoiler. As Seth said at the beginning, this is supposed to be fun. For me, after driving an hour to get to a cache and then hiking to it, finding one is a lot more fun than not finding one. I'm not saying I HAVE to find the cache, but give me the option.
  3. The tupperware containers that I run into are usually overflowing with trinkets and badly battered. Ammo cans seem to be the container of choice. However, when I think of ammo cans I think of those old metal ones. I prefer the heavy black plastic ones (ABS?). They are about 14X14X5 and can be labelled easily. Here's one for my upcoming Mensa Cache.

  5. It's still open. It's not a web type of hunt though, purely paper and pencil. Jared (I've never met Jared) and I have emailed each other over the years about this hunt and our thoughts. He finally put them all together on a web page, but it's nothing fancy. Just random thoughts. Probably won't make much sense without the sheet and map, but it does tell you how to get that info. It may be a little off-topic for geocaching (and maybe not), but if you get the info and want to discuss it, please email me. Here's Jared's page -- http://www.csh.rit.edu/~jlyon/projects/puzzles/kidd/ Enjoy, and good luck
  6. Actually, this type of hunt isn't new. Catskill, NY has been doing them for years (to promote tourism). I've been working on their most recent one for nearly five years! You get ALL of the clues at once and there is NO entrance fee. Current estimated value of the treasure is $16,000! Not sure a GPS is needed, but the clues do mention longitude/latitude, minutes, and seconds. I may have to re-read the clues! If you're interested call the Greene County (NY) Tourism Board in Catskill and ask for a copy of their "Captain Kidd and the Missing Crown" hunt. For those of you not in the area, I'd be happy to check out any spots for you, and would be happy to share any info I have. (No I don't work for them.
  7. Was watching TV the other day about drilling for oil in Alaska. I found it interesting that while I cannot get a permit for a geocache in a wilderness area, thirteen states WILL give me a permit to drill for oil in a wilderness area!

Rut, Are we talking pictures here in these forums or pictures for a cache detail page?
  9. I've been planning a cache all winter for placement in the spring (actually 2). I've put a lot of effort into it and it contains more than the usual trinkets. I was worried about plundering so I was pleased to see the MOCs (Members Only Caches -- I'm a techno geek -- everything can be reduced to a three letter acronym or TLA). Hah! I would place it for members only. Perfect! Then I started to think about it. Probably only a few charter members in my area. Plundering isn't really an issue here yet. I'd probably only get 2 or 3 visitors and they'd probably be from out of town. My whole purpose for placing the cache was to give local cachers a chance to cache, and as a thank you for the caches that they had placed. So I don't think I will place it as a MOC. Which brings me to my point. Some are concerned that the really good caches will be MOCs and only geotrash will be left for everyone else. After giving it some thought, I don't think that will be the case. After putting so much thought into my cache I want as many people as possible to see it, and my guess is that other cachers will feel the same way.
  10. I am amazed at the number of posts that feel Jeremy should remain our slave, keep the site completely free, and add all of the features they would like to see. What world do you live in? Do you have ANY idea what a site like this costs? If you don't want to pay, don't! Everything you now have for free is still free. My personal feeling is that I am only paying Jeremy for the fun I have ALREADY had. New features? Bonus!

  13. Everything looks fine in IE, but black on black in Netscape.
