Micros again!

There was a point when I couldn't stand micros, but I think that was too general a statement. I think now the WAY the micros were hidden was bugging me more than anything else.

The advantage of them (when well hidden)...and IMHO....is that they CAN be harder to find, and for many people the searching for the cache is a good part of the fun...I know it is for me.

That said, a WELL HIDDEN micro is worth going for and some of them can elude you and/or be so frustrating that you WANT to come back and find it and figure out where you went wrong before.

Ultimately, whether micro or quart-sized Tupperware, the hiding job is probably the main thing that makes a cache fun or just another *ho-hum*. And, equally important to me at least, is the trip to the cache area. If there is a nice drive, a nice hike or something worth seeing along the way, that is as much of it as anything else. I know some people could care less about this aspect.

That's it for me. I don't do multis either. Fortunately there's no end of choices for people interested in doing geocaching.

I might do a multi-cache if it was only one or two steps to get to the final spot, but I've seen them with 5 steps. Then what? You get to the same piece of plastic tupperware anyway, and the 5 steps may or may not have been interesting. I would rather do 5 or 6 separate caches.

Continuing the lack of interest idea...the novelty is indeed wearing off for me, and when you consider that most of the people who read this thread have found 100 or more, I suspect that increasingly becomes the case.

I find that only about 1 in 25 finds is noteworthy. You can't always tell from the description or rating, but those do help sometimes.

Yes, I still get the bug once in a while, but not like *before*. I got an email from a 1,000 plus finder who indicated pretty much the same thing. I guess it's true of any *hobby*.

The best thing going for geocaching (for me) right now is taking me to some new places, but they've got to be hiking places to get the most bang for the buck. A cache in the base of a lamp post just isn't as exciting as it used to be.

On the other hand, I am enjoying HIDING some that I hope are a little unusual and will bring a smile to someone's face.

I'm glad you got your dog back....that must have been a traumatic experience. I'm sure he'll mend well under your care.

I've been thinking of getting a dog myself, but don't know if I'm up to the committment.

I've located one that I really like...but...indecision is a terrible thing!

Over the last couple of years, I have had a few go missing and the interesting thing is, it *had* to be a geocacher who did it.

The ones that went missing were in wilderness areas where they would not be accidentally discovered by non-cachers.

Too bad that thieves exist among our ranks...or if not thieves, malevolent cachers who do it for whatever reason. The sad thing is, the only people they hurt are the first one or two non-suspecting cache hunters who come along and can't find the cache.

I guess I need to know what you mean by *sites*. We don't have our own website like some Texans do, but we have plenty of caches.

What are you interested in? Web sites or caches? You have a great chance here in Central California and the Bay area to get a lot of caching in.

Thanks to all the cachers who had ideas on my PDA and Watcher not showing some caches even though they were in a file which showed them in EasyGPS as coordinates.

Loading newer versions of the programs I was using has cleared up the problem whatever it was.

Fizzy is taking a look at the original file (zip with gpx inside) as a *treasure hunt* to see why the older versions of the programs did not see those questioned caches.

I also opened the zip file instead of saving it to disk, and once again, while then looking at this in EasyGPS, the suspect files show up, but when looking in Watcher, they don't...just a little more narrowing for you tech types.

I thought maybe it was the *breadth* versus *depth* issue in Plucker, but it is set up for *breadth* as recommended by Spinner. So, that's not it.

I just looked and I am using Watcher 1.20 exe only according to the popup indicator when I just move-over the watcher logo.

Hey Pat...

I looked at some of the Spinner info and thought it might be the Retrieval Order setting in Plucker...needs to be set to breadth first instead of depth first...but that's the way I had it, so maybe even at that setting it sometimes loses pages.

I guess there is something to be said for a paper printout, but that means having to *plan* a trip rather than just driving somewhere and depending on our electronic gadgets.

OK, PDA and Watcher users....any ideas on this one? (This may have been discussed somewhere, if so, just point me to the URL..I did a search and the stuff I came up with included comments like ...*no one could solve this problem for me*.)

I got a pocket query for Sacramento caches. I downloaded it. Used Spinner on it and loaded the *new* names and coords to my Etrex. There were 200 as that is what the pocket query was set up for. (I've now updated it to 400 to see if that makes a difference)

I also used watcher on this...for use on my laptop when traveling in the car. I also put it on the PDA.

I loaded the pushpins to Topo by National Geographic and used it as I moved around Sac.

I pulled up the map and it showed Old Mills and I had Old Mills in my gps.

When I pulled up at the location, I looked up the description on the Watcher on laptop and on the PDA...it wasn't there.

The same thing happened on Totally Tubular by Wasser Adventure Seekers and their Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Trader Joes.

So I went to a couple of these places and poked around a bit, but without descriptions it was a little rough and I abandoned them. The Trader Joes coords put me near a Long's Drug store apparently across the street from Trader Joes. When I got home I looked these up on the web site. Since I only had six-character names and no descriptions on Watcher or PDA, the names didn't do any good in what to look for. The Trader Joes finds indicate the coords are off 100 feet, across the street. Without a description or clues, I was looking entirely in the wrong area.

The entertainment for Picnic Time is still ready to go! There was no one there but me on Sunday the 11th between 7 and 8 pm.

The other entertainment on that road has been removed.
