Stockton & Modesto California Geocaching...Part 2
Ron Streeter replied to Ron Streeter's topic in West and Southwest
....if more women took that respectful approach to their men (especially their older, needier men) there would be fewer divorces ! In general, we men need to be told how good we are (I'm talking geocaching here!) so we can continue to go out and hunt and gather (geocaches that is!). As far as the "gang of two" (plus spouses and children) are concerned, I'll just have to redouble my efforts to thwart the "forces of evil". Ron I've never been lost. ...revisited. Here's part of a post I made at the bottom of page 7 this morning...since we made the leap to page 8, I didn't want anyone to miss it...especially Jaimee ! Also take note of the Tattoos and Flashlights part. ************ LuvOzzy..... .....you're just no fun to beat up on anymore ! (But that won't stop me from doing it some more). I have a new mission now and that is to take down MIKE MORRIS ! I don't care what a nice guy he is....he's going DOWN ! Mike's signature on a find is..."Our gps took us right to this one." (or words to that effect). His revenge took 2 minutes ! I solemnly vow to place a cache that will take Mike at least 3 minutes to find ! All in fun Mike, but don't be surprised if people start placing caches DEFYING you to find them. ************* On the "deception" front, check out caches that feature TATTOOS and FLASHLIGHTS. There are some puzzles there to solve. I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost. -

....you $%&*#2%&& ! After all those caches you so easily find, you should have a good idea of how NOT to hide them so others can find them ! Yes, we'll have to go together sometime. On the one hand, I would have to endure the embarassment of you beating me to it first, but on the other hand, if I DID luck out and find it before you did, I would be grinning from ear to ear and couldn't wait to get home and post it ! I forgot you asked for help on Del Puerto Creek. That was an odd one for me because of all the non-cachers involved, so I can't really assess it as accurately as I would like. Ok...all that said, time to start planning my special Mike Morris Torture Test ! Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost. -

....STUMPED ? Stop the presses, put out a special edition, call Mike Wallace ! George...what cache did you stump Mike on? I need to study that cache and bump it up a notch. Now my goal is to make Mike call me (or take at least FOUR minutes to find my cache !). Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost. -

....was great ! Special thanks to George and Mary for all their prepartion ! It was really fun to meet the folks I hadn't met before....Cloudbase, Retreevers, C&MMorris, Riker, Just A Short Walk...and as they say at the academy awards, I hope I haven't left anyone out. The "oldtimers"...George, Tomaksi, LO/F I have been running into and corresponding with for some time, but I continue to learn more about them. In addition to getting us all outdoors geocaching has given us an opportunity to meet some new folks from all walks of life...can't beat that. *********** I have a number of emails from some of you, and haven't had a chance to read them yet, so bear with me. I went after a few caches after the picnic and those interested parties will just have to wait an hour or so to see if I found them or not ! I see Tomaski found one of mine and I think I know which one it was..I think he put a traveler in it. ************ Once again, thanks for the good time all...see you on the trails. Hey fellow cachers…. George and I got all the goodies hidden for the picnic tomorrow ! I put 7 down in one area and George and his son put 8 down in two other areas. I took pity on you poor souls and placed them as 1's and 2's for difficulty…that'll even out the probable 4's and 5's that George did ! Weather should be beautiful….like George, I'm going to kick back…that is, I'm just going to tag along with people who go after the ones I placed to see how much trouble they get into ! Even though I know what these things look like, I don't want to fumble around looking for George's torture chambers. After I left Knight's Ferry I found some caches but tried to save some energy for tomorrow. Today I found: Past and Present Roberts Ferry Kassie's Kid Cache Black Bart I also did maintenance for Don's "La Grange", moving it to a different area….and of course, I placed a cache. Maybe it'll get published tonight/tomorrow, we'll see. Looking forward to seeing everyone and meeting the Retreevers, Morris, Riker, etc. Ed (HiFlier) of MigAlley fame said he would drop by. You will all enjoy meeting him. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost. -

.....posting this at 8 p.m. and getting ready to get off line. Give me a call at the phone number I left on your cell phone system. Easier for me to read you the coordinates than to type them in....YOU can type them in to your materials for the picnic ! Yes, it was a hot one out there. I put on some miles after I left Knight's Ferry, and don't have many caches to show for it, but I had a good time. Call me George... See you all tomorrow at the picnic. Ron I've never been lost. Some folks like to rush in, grab the cache and get out, while others like more of a challenge. Thanks in advance for any info you give me here! Jaimee Hi Jaimee... You answered your own question about what people will DO to find a cache. Some people don't like multi-caches because it requires going to multiple locations before getting to the final destination. My thought is this (and it's what I do on my multi-caches). If you put items in each of the phases of the cache find, a person can find just one or two parts and let it go at that, or they can go all the way. My King Tut can't be found WITHOUT going to other caches, and the parts are all located at some distance from one another. If someone has the drive to go for all the individual parts, they PROBABLY will go on for the final, but some may not. On the other hand, if you CAN'T find each of the individual parts, you're sunk on the final. There are multi-caches I won't go for because I would rather go on FIVE "finds" than five parts for 1 find. So, it all gets back to what an INDIVIDUAL will do and why they do it. Some of examples of multi-part caches: Survivor in Sacramento, MiG Alley (starts in Round Valley) and King Tut's Treasure. ************** As to doing research to get to the cache parts? I personally like that part. A research trip on the internet or to a library can be fun, and if I have decided to do a multi-cache (for whatever reason)the research part may come into play. It all gets down to what people will DO to find a cache in any instance. The ratings of 4 or 5 scare some people away, and challenge others. There is no one right answer to what will attract people. All you can do is put it out there and see what happens. Now if you KNOW what some of the area cachers are like, you could plan one JUST FOR THEM.....people who read this forum LOVE ROCKS as an example. Ron I've never been lost. ...and IRS ! Hey Kevin, bring your new toy to the picnic. I've sometimes thought about lugging the 7 pound laptop in a backpack with the gps hooked to it and using the mapping software, but thought that would be TOO much. Interested to see how the screen looks on your PDA. ************* Two folks looked for the Knives cache today and neither found it. One looked using the clue I emailed and the other just looked for it after finding Hawk's Watch. You and George got off easy. I'll email you the clue I am sending to people who request it and you can see if it fits what you did to find it. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost. -

...of other cachers... This is especially for LuvOzzy, but others might get a kick out of it too. LO said that Tomaski and George had an advantage at my Knives cache because they had my phone number to call and ask for the clue. NOPE...NOT TRUE. No one has my phone number...well, maybe the IRS and a few banks! No cacher has my phone number. So, you ask, how did they talk to me on a phone. Here's how. Tomaski called his wife and asked her to email me with the message to call him ASAP. No indication of where he was. The email was sent at 6:45 and AS IT HAPPENS, I checked my email (from school) at 6:50. Since I can not place long distance calls from my school desk AND I HAVE NO CELL PHONE, I had to go to a payphone and call Kevin ! When I got ahold of him, he didn't even know what cache they were looking for...an hour of looking in the rain will ADDLE anyone's brain. So, I thought that was a rather interesting COINCIDENCE that I checked my email within 5 minutes of Kevin's wife having sent it. If I had not, those guys WOULD STILL BE LOOKING ! I may have to break down and get my TRACFONE activated...I never really had a use for it that much until GEOCACHING ! Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost. ....I don't remember what the terrain rating on Del Puerto is, but maybe THAT should be bumped up. As far as 1/2 star of increase on either, it's so subjective that I don't know if it makes a difference. Increasingly, I'm thinking that ANY cache that is completely covered should get a higher difficulty rating. The Knives cache you "found" last night is rated at 3 for difficulty I think, but since it's completely covered, maybe it should be more. The other terrain factor there might make it need more stars for difficulty too. As your Del Puerto is completely covered, and terrain is a factor as well, it certainly needs to be rated fairly high, even if not all the way. SUBJECTIVE, SUBJECTIVE, SUBJECTIVE. .....DSL email problems, duplicate cache posts and now ARCHIVING PROBLEMS ! Girl, you are one bundle of problemas ! But, help is on the way....as far as archiving goes, you'll just have to send an email to "contact" at the geocaching pages and mention the name of the cache you want un-archived. Also mention it is in there twice. They will probably take out one of the cache listings. *********** LO...you emailed me about going caching Friday and since I will be working with George from 11:30 on...on the picnic scene....I don't think that will work...thanks for the invite though...another time. Well, it may have looked like that, but it was really Tomaski and George at this location: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=19929 They wanted some knives and thought they would be crafty and go get some free ones....I could hardly understand their gurgling, wheezy, rain-soaked rasps, but gathered they wanted a clue, so I took pity on them and pointed them to it. I hope they don't slosh up the house too much when they get home. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost. -

....we can talk phone numbers at the picnic....as far as working on laptops, no, not on hardware. Most shops won't do that either, preferring to send them to manufacturer. ....well if George's goal was to stump you (or me), he did a good job. Several things you said in your forum post about Del Puerto reflect some of the observations I made to George about this cache, but it IS a legit cache hide and a TOUGH one.I hope he gives you enough of a clue that you can find it.
