  1. ....moving up the ladder? Looks like I'm 4th in the world for placements and 42 for finds....room for improvement ! Correct me if I'm wrong but I think there are about 25,500 cachers now and around 22,500 caches. (these are both BALLPARK figures). ************** Today I found: O'Pioneers (FTF?) Sonny Sutter Creek I also placed two which will be published in the next few days. Kind of nice NOT to be at Knights Ferry area for a change. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost. [This message was edited by Ron Streeter on April 24, 2002 at 06:58 PM.]
  2. .....what a rush ! Found three today and placed two...was in Sutter Creek at 4:10 and got to Lodi for work at 4:58...I was flying ! More later.... I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  3. ....and it's a small world. After exploring many forums here about pdas, avantgo and the Pathetique site, I discovered that the latter is run by none-other-than BLSCEARCE (Brian) who was one of the co-sponsors of the recent SUNOL geo-get-together. Had I known at that time about this great device/combination, I would have mined him for all pertinent info. If nothing else, this is yet one more treasure hunt....dealing with treasure hunting. I have also discovered that there are factory reconditioned models selling at basically half price with full warranty...that appeals to the Scotch in me ! Ron I've never been lost. 4. ....and other cache views and news! George.... All the more reason for me to get cranes while it's easy ! Which brings up my next observation. I am starting to think that there is a certain "regionalism" that is becoming apparent in caching. As an example, several of my caches which have been found recently by non-Modesto area cachers were apparently a little difficult for those finders. Some of these finders are quite adept at hiding and placing caches. I think we have set a standard for hiding for each other that is different than it is for people from other areas. I don't think this is a bad thing, just a "symptom" or "symbol" of how we are hiding them. There are of course easier ones we are hiding too, but maybe you get my drift. To further prove this point, look at George's comments to some of us and of Fattuhr's and my comments about the LLAMA caches in Sac. Obviously those are extreme examples of easy to find caches, and maybe examples of a particular cache hider, but again, maybe you get my drift. Now that I think about it, some of the rock pile caches and some others WERE challenging in Sac. Well, rambling, so will quit. George, thanks for thoughts on PDAs. I always do a lot of research on such purchases, with the result sometimes being I talk myself out of things. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  5. ....I can't go caching on Tuesday, but I could on Wednesday....I wouldn't have to be at work until 5. If that works for you, let me know some of the caches you want to go after and maybe they are some I need to. I need Cranes and a couple of more in that direction, and some up by your O' Pioneers area. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  6. ....I think I'll pass on the Mt. Diablo on the 27th....the Stockton Asparagus Festival is this weekend and I also want to find a few flatland or foothills caches. Those top of the Mt. caches have been around a long time and I'v managed to avoid them so far. While there get my Purple Top and Pines and Bob's McStone cache. These will get you warmed up for the ones higher up the mountain. *************** Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  7. ...after they are in your GPS it's an easy matter to UPLOAD them to any mapping program you might have like TOPO! (from National Geographic/Wildflower) or TOPO USA! from Delorme. If you don't have a mapping program...get one..they are invaluable at picturing where all of George's caches are in relationship to one another ! Ron Gotta go now...from school to home....good night. I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  8. ....Ok, Ok, settle down...it's all in fun ! Glad your hubbie took you for dinner. That was nice of him. I have been exploring new and exciting electronic gizmos (PDAs for one) but there is something the men and women of caching SHOULD check out. The EasyGPS program has been around for along time at geocaching.com but I only recently started using it. It's neat. First of all get the program itself onto your computer. Then check some caches you would like downloaded to your computer. Download them into a file (it gives a default name to the file) and then you can go in and edit things like the icon for the flag, circle, etc AND the name of the cache. So instead of GC3425 or some such you can change it to REVENGE. After that, if you have a data cable you can take the coords and names and all right to your gps by downloading from the EasyGPS to your GPS. It sure beats handtyping them in, and after you've used it for a while you'll catch on to how neat it is. There are some wranglings you have to go through, but worth it. I have to change settings a lot because I am downloading to both a Magellan and a Garmin, but they both then contain everything I need. The Magellan hooks to my laptop in the car and takes me to the parking lot and the Etrex takes me into the field to find the railroad track and the cache....with a little help from LO/F. Anyway, check it out if you haven't already. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  9. ....got your email with the attachment. Now is that a "ladylike" thing to do? No, it's not. But then, I guess that's what we men get for giving you women the vote ! Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  10. ....she's gone to her room. Hey George/Tomaski....you HAD to put that bug in my ear about a Palm device. I spent a half-hour looking at the Handspring site on the web. An incredible number of devices you can attach to it including a phone module AND a Magellan gps ! Looks pretty nifty. Then I went to the Pathetique page (spelling?) and studiend that awhile. I DO like the idea of his dressed up web pages displaying on the Palm. One possible shortcoming might be that he updates once a week on Wednesday. The way George has been peppering the landscape with caches, there's no way to keep the thing current with just a once a week download from the page guy.! Still, another way to separate me from my money. I notice Handspring has a color device for about $300. Any point in getting color? I suppose if you wanted to get their camera device (free with the fancy visor) then you might want to show them in color. Any thoughts you two (or anyone else) want to share here would be appreciated. Ron OK, LO....quit your sputtering and fix dinner ! I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  11. ....you can type faster than that! Or are you too busy sputtering ! Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  12. ....for bear creek cache ! Must have been your hubbies fault ! No self-respecting woman cacher would make a mistake like that ! (and would she admit it if she DID?) Ron (the male chauvinist pig) I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  13. .....LO....I give up ! You and your fellow (no pun intended) women are god's gift to mankind (no pun intended). You women are the greatest cachers ever born of woman ! You also can cook, clean and do other things better than men can! Is it any wonder we can't live with you or without you! (but just wait until the cache of the sexes is underway) Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.

  15. ....look out girl...you're movin' right up to the top of the list with LO ! Keep "smilin'".... Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  16. ....first... I resemble that "certain man" reference in regard to Revenge...she had me psyched out. I was looking for some artsy-craftsy (womany) kind of rendition of the clue. I got a mindset on one or two ideas for the clue and that was my downfall. I need to learn how to think all "airy" like a woman ! (whoops, watch out for reprisals) As far as the men (or man) eating crow, that remains to be seen, but you'll find that we men can graciously accept defeat on those rare occasions it raises its ugly head. Next.... George...take Mike with you....but be sure he makes it to the surface again. He has to undergo a torture test of MY choosing too. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  17. ....my two big interests and I'm mediocre in both ! But I was pleased with my score today...Tiger Woods doesn't have to worry. Still enjoying thoughts of the picnic and the good camaraderie of the group. The upcoming "battle of the sexes" should be fun too..whenever and whatever it is. I think the hubbies could be in deep do-do though after the event...there is sure to be grumbling on both sides about "unfairness", "too hard", "too steep", "too long". I fortunately don't have a live-in significant other who will be participating, so I won't have to listen to that stuff. We'll have to figure out a deal for a male team member to "sit out" if we are going to have balance teams..of course then the women would squabble ..."you still got to bring in a fresh player!" Oh well, there's never any satisfying "them" anyway...what's one more squabble. More later....hope your mondays are going well. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  18. ....wait till you see the next one I have in mind for LO, Mike, George and Tomaski! I was mainly "talking trash" to Mike when I said I would design one that would stump him, but I woke up this morning with an idea for the ULTIMATE hard cache, and I think it will get placed this week. This cache will be rated a 5 for difficulty and a 1 for terrain. It will make DRAGONFLY look like a LLAMA cache from Sacramento. In short, it will STUMP the best of the Modesto area cachers ! I WILL PREVAIL ! I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.

  20. ....and other news. George, you've been tracking these folks for awhile. How about you email them and ASK if they are a team of 20 people or something? LO....just giving you a hard time on the Tattoo deal. Royalties? How about that 15 minutes of fame you were talking about? That should be enough. You all know each other's tattoos I bet, so it would be other cachers who could GUESS who had what....the hair on some of them might be a clue ! Finally, it's 10 pm and I just watched the first 2 hour episode of an 8 hour total...of ECO CHALLENGE New Zealand. It's on USA network for the next 3 nights. Right now a US team and the Kiwis are in 1st and 2nd place. The eco challenge makes THE AMAZING RACE look like a 10 miles drive to Wal-Mart. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  21. ....what else ! Just read a couple of more emails and cache postings. George said he didn't see what all the fuss was about on Revenge...guess she had me psyched out George...but then I didn't see what all the fuss was about on Good Luck, and I don't have a geologist for a wife ! Then Mike's post on my Flashlight cache was nice...he said it took more than 4 minutes to walk to and find the cache....my guess is it took a bit to acutally FIND it too. Thanks for the compliment on the way it was hidden. A light caching day I think....people doing other things and that's good. I for instance mowed my lawn...my one big accomplishment...and it's a small lawn. I checked on a cache and will be checking on another one probably Tuesday. Monday a.m. the golf course is calling ! Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  22. ....no further diatribes on how women are more competent than men? I went out to check on one of my own caches (it's still there) and thought I would come back to a raging debate on who the better cachers are. Anyway, while on my walk I started noodling around how three or four couples could have a men vs. women competition in geocaching, and I think it would work. If the camping (or other) weekend comes together, that might be a fun competition. I just saw that George found Green Scarab. He told me he was going for it. Black Scarab has had a couple of people after it too....folks who have come from the Sac area. Well, I guess LO is licking her wounds somewhere so I'll have to find some other combatant with whom to mince words ! Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  23. ....re your whole treatise on women being better at finding things AND better drivers...I'm sure you could site statistics written up in expensive government reports (headed by women), but tell me this.... Why did you send me an email asking where the tattoo pictures ended up? Any cache finder worth his/her salt should have been able to do a simple search to find the cache description ! Get with it girl....no wonder I'm focusing on Mike Morris now....! I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.

  25. I knew it ! Mike Morris is a fraud ! Carolyn finds them and he types in the logs....! That's it, now he's REALLY dead meat! I will SPECIFY on the special cache that only HE can look for it ! Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
