  1. I finally got my 2007 Geocoin Fest coins (3) and they are as large, heavy and beautiful as I was expecting. C&P kind of ticks me the way they sell some of their coins but they do make some of the best around (guess that's why it ticks me when I miss out).
  2. I would like to chime in here and wish everybody a Happy Valentine's Day! I've been wishing all day that my Valentine and I were preparing to head to California for the Coin Fest but it's not to be!
  3. I absolutely think that C&P are savvy business people. They sell their coins the way they do because they KNOW it will generate a frenzy and encourage people to buy 30 or 40 or 50 at a time so they can make a profit afterward. They also know that some people will miss out because they don't want to or can't be at their computerss at 5:00 in the morning for a coin sale or they are not off work yet when the sale starts. Then these people who missed out will be wanting to get a coin and they can sell them at auction for double (or more). How about the next time they sell a coin, do it like many other do. Take pre-orders (no money exchanging hands, just an order). Mint the number you have presold plus a couple hundred extras and when they come in, invoice the people who pre-ordered. Nobody spent money and had to wait a month for the coin, everybody who wanted a coin got one and C&P sold a ton of coins and they are still just as beautiful and desirable as ever. I guess it would make these forums kind of boring with nothing to cuss and discuss, huh?
  4. Ok, it's obvious that I am friends with C&P, so it will just sound like I am defending them...However, I know for a fact they did take the number of requests...and added at least 200 to that number...and they still sold out in one night. Yes, it's a popular coin, and hindsight says they should have made more. They don't get any money off the inflated re-sale market, so a shortage of coins does them no good. The coin market is a fickle thing though...I just got all of the finishes of the GeocoinFest event...this is a beautiful coin, yet they aren't selling. They took requests for that one as well. Who can really say which coins will sell... I am happy to hear that C&P made an effort to supply the coins they thought people would purchase, only they or somebody in the loop knew that for sure. It speaks volumes about what a beautiful coin this is that it sold so quickly and so readily even after extras were made. Most likely, there is nothing that anybody could have done to make it so everybody who wanted one could get one. I think I have managed to make a deal with another collector to get the two finishes I really wanted which I am thankful for, either through trade or purchase. I did purchase the GeoCoin Fest coins because I think they are great looking coins as well. I know somebody who will be attending the fest and have asked them to get me one of the event only coins, I'm really excited about that!
  5. I've said this before and firmly believe that the way C&P sells their coins creates this buying frenzy. I realize this is a beautiful coin and lots of people want it but when it is only available at a certain time on a certain date, it just screams 'sold out'! It is also obvious that they did not create enough coins to satisfy the demand. I was under the impression that is why they were asking people's opinions on how many they were interested in. Isn't the idea to sell the coins? So if you made a couple hundred more than you anticipate you will sell, is it not logical that they will eventually sell and then everybody who wants one can get one? I participated in one such sale (Gold Compass Rose). It actually started 20 minutes late (6:20 a.m. my time) and the website experienced some problems because of the high volume. The sale previous to that one dropped the site to it's knees because of the overwhelming volume. Don't know what happened this time other than all the coins sold out but I'm guessing it put a strain on the servers again. So why not mint some more coins since it is quite obvious the are still lots of people out here who missed out?
  6. Very good today for me (not so much for my wife!): Appalachian Massachusetts Appalachian Massachusetts LE 5 Hogwild Stuff Travel coins (all metals) Atlantagal 2007 Black Nickel Geocache America Trades with Atlantagal (Thanks!)
  7. I am fine with everything I am reading. If it is a concensus that we discuss the groups at the Brownbag Event, that's fine. If another place and/or time would be more agreeable, that's fine too. Let me know that the decision is so we can plan accordingly. It is good that we have this forum to exchange ideas and bring more people onboard. If you know anybody who wants to help, give them the address of this forum so they can put their $.02 worth in.
  8. That is definitely a kewl koin! Will it only be available at the GeoCoin Fest or will they be available afterward for those of us who just could not attend? What an accomplishment that is!
  9. Over the past two days, I've had a good e-mail discussion with mmgestes and I have realized a couple things that I have been a little rigid about. I'm going to go with the flow more and let go of some hard feelings (some of you know what I am talking about). All I know for sure is I am ready to be part of at least one geocaching group (or more) and we will participate when we can and help out when we can. We will most definitely enjoy the company of the fine people we have met through geocaching. We are tentatively planning our 2nd Annual Rawlins Brownbag Event for June 9th (as much as one can considering it is 4 months away) and anybody who wants to come will be welcomed with open arms. If there is another event the same day or on a consecutive weekend, I hope you have a wonderful time and a great turnout. The only reason we thought about this day is for consistency since we had our event last year on the 2nd Saturday of June. 'Nuff said! Thanks Michelle! Edit: Spelling & typing error.
  10. The list server idea is a specialized thing, most likely where each person has to join the group and then yahoo manages it so that every e-mail goes to everybody in the group. I don't have that capability and I'm sure the hosting service doesn't either. As for sending a single e-mail to everybody, that is easy, you just set up a group in your e-mail program. Then you write an e-mail and select that group and that particular e-mail is sent to everybody in the group you set up. The problem is that when somebody responds, the response is not automatically sent to everybody in the group. I can set up a forum on the website for free which is just like this one where a moderator can be set up. I can also set up a guestbook where people who visit the site can leave their comments. All this is possible, it just takes time to set up. I'll have time to work on this until it warms up but after about May, I will be very busy geocaching and doing yard work and fishing and all the other stuff we in Wyoming love to do. So if we are going to do a website, we need to get started as soon as we can. I will concentrate on the website if that is what we decide to do and let the rest of you iron out the details. If the website is not important to the majority, I'll help wherever else I can. If you are dead set about having your own event either on the same weekend as my event or a week before or after, I fear that it will split those willing to participate in two as probably many won't be able to make a road trip two weekends in a row.
  11. Yes, I agree that quarterly or every 4 months would be much better, especially considering that at best we will be anywhere from 125 to 200 miles from the location of the event. Any more often than that would be very prohibitive financially and I think we would burn out quickly. We can interact using the website and the GC forum but get togehter every few months. Michelle, you said something about a list server but I am unfamiliar with that term (I don't know what it is). Explain to me what that is an I'll let you know if I have the capabilities or the website would have the capability to do that. Included with the cost of the domain hosting is 100 e-mail addresses, I believe as well as a website blog. Kind of cool! Another thing we have to decide is what the domain name should be. I'll have to get it reserved as soon as possible so somebody else doesn't grab it first. These are just a couple more things that fell out of my brain while I was sitting here at my laptop. We went to Laramie today just for the drive and to get over the 300 cache mark. That ended up being pretty hard to do since we have almost all the caches there and it was a tough day since we only found 3 of the 6 caches we tried.
  12. I have designed several websites and could arrange for a domain name and hosting for about $60.00 a year. So I will volunteer to get the website off the ground once we have the necessary funds together. For an idea of what I have done, you can click on the link below to see my personal website. If we get a group together, I think we should charge a small membership fee (say $5 per year to pay for the website and other expenses) once we get the group organized. I'm not sure monthly meetings is a good idea but that would be up to the members to decide. If it were every month, it may interfere with people like myself trying to have an event with a good turnout. These are just a few of my thoughts, take them for what they are worth. My website: http://www.imrubicon.com Edit: forgot the URL
  13. I was just made aware of this thread and we would be interested in joining a group of some type. My wife and I attended the brunch last weekend in Green River and had a good time. As I indicated to everybody I talked to there, we are planning on having our 2nd Annual Rawlins Brownbag Event either the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of June here in Rawlins. Since we are pretty central to Lyman and Douglas, maybe it would be a good spot to discuss this group further. We are ready to go to any event that is less than 200 miles distance so keep us posted on this thread. I'll subscribe to it now so we can keep informed about what is going on. I spend most of my time on the geocoin forum. I know a few people here in Rawlins that are just getting started so I can mention this idea to them and see if they are interested. I'll be watching and if there is anything I can do to help, let me know.
  14. I am seeking an Ellis Island geocoin, my trade list is in my sig below (not much of a trading list right now, need to order some extras so I have something to trade). Thanks!
  15. Missed your first version, will try to get one of these. I'll subscribe so I can keep on top of this coin. Thanks for making it! Edit: Removed dumb question that was answered if I had read better!
  16. Not that I'm promoting my program but I have a shareware program that is downloadable and you have 45 days to try it out before you have to purchase. The shareware donation is $10 and you can purchase a CD for $15. The link to the download site is in my sig. Give it a try and see what you think.
  17. I recommend clicking on the link for the coin even if the text under the coin says "sold out." They can update the inventory before they update the coin page, so you might still have a chance at picking up some coins. That is a good idea but I did that as well. It just takes you to another page with a lot of space and 'Sold Out' at the bottom. I will definitely return there and check it out as I really would like to get at least one of these coins since I have the previous two issues. Thanks for responding.
  18. I went there as soon as I saw your post but there were none available. It shows the coins but it indicates they are sold out. I will take the advice from above and check back with them occasionally. Never thought about the fact that I probably should have posted my request in the trading thread even though I would be willing to buy as well. Bummer!
  19. Somehow I missed the sale on the 2007 Compass Rose coin! Does anybody out there have an extra I could purchase or trade for? Beggers can't be choosers so any of the three metals would be Ok although I actually prefer the black nickel version. I almost missed the Geocoin Fest but managed to get 3 of them tonight and I suspect they won't last much longer.
  20. Thanks for not reading the post. I'll add your 2cents to the rest. God I could almost pay tuition at the local community college. As far as allaboutcoins goes no you don't have the potential to be a customer. They are getting out of the geocoin business. Ya the code should have been sent with the coin. Thats my fault. ALL COIN CODES ARE THE SAME "igomicro07". I'm also sorry you are not happy with your coins. If you want you can send them back to me and I'll give you a full refund. I've got about 50 other people that want one after they have seen them. I've also got one on ebay right now selling for 8.50 and has 2 days left. I thought the quality was good for the detail and it being a MICRO. Don't take anything I'm saying personal. Your complaint was very mild in comparison to some of the emails I got. Ya i'm kind of in a bad mood. I hope this hasn't caused to many people heartache. I tried. Cachanova I have no idea what you mean about not reading the post, what does that mean? What does your ability to pay tuition to college have to do with this situation? There is absolutely no reason for you to jump at me, I actually like the coins but one of them is not the quality that I have come to expect. I'll keep mine but for you to cop an attitude because we are asking for the code for this coin is unacceptable! We purchased this coin and we have every right to have the activation code. I have it now and I can continue on. With all the attitude that I have encountered over this coin, I'll definitely think twice about purchasing a coin from you or from allaboutcoins. I'm sorry that you feel you have been attacked but from the tone of the above response, perhaps you can blame yourself for at least part of that.
  21. I also need to know where to get the activation codes. I wrote to allaboutcoins and they sent a somewhat rude reply that they only make the coins and that I needed to go to geocaching.com to get the codes. Shows how much they know and how concerned they are about their customers! Even though I didn't necessarily buy the coin from them, they should be more helpful than that. I might be a potential customer as far as having a coin made and I didn't like the response a lot. So where do we go to get the activation codes, that info should have been with the coin. I like the coin but 'Idaho Geocachers' looks like it has been stamped on and one of my coins, it was not stamped hard enough and it is a little hard to read. Also the tracking code numbers are very small, not colored and are very hard to read. Just my $.02 worth!
  22. Idaho Micros X 2 No activation info. I tried coincodes.com and it was wasn't there. Any suggestions?
  23. It may be a little superficial but I love the icons as well! I don't have a huge problem with coins that don't have unique icons as long as that was noted from the outset. It bothers me when you are told the coin will have a unique icon when you purchase it but it takes weeks or even months for that to actually happen. It is often a selling point for me and I suspect many others as well and it should happen more quickly than it does at times. I think sometimes coins are rushed too much and things are not done properly. I would rather wait for a coin to be the best it can be than to have it available quicker with problems such as no icon. Once again, just my $.02 worth. As my son tells me sometimes, "it's just my opinion, I might be wrong" (you don't suppose he is telling me something, do you?)
  24. I just sent my request for a coin and here are my thoughts... I am happy to support a cause that encourages and supports geocaching! To me that is what coins should be doing, supporting geocaching. I would much prefer to support a cause like this where they are selling their coin for a reasonable amount even after donating $1 to the cause, rather than lining the pockets of some greedy coin creator who does it mostly for the profit. I have said it before (and gotten into a couple heated exchanges) about those who charge way too much for their coins. I refuse to buy those coins and I enthusiastically put my money down for coins such as this. I don't have money falling out of my pockets so I try to be choosy about where my money goes. If the money raised accomplishes something, I try my hardest to participate (the BikeDog coin comes to mind). Thanks for doing this and I hope it encourages others to do the same.
