1. Well, I just upgraded from a Legend, to a Legend C a couple of weeks ago, and Just happened to read this post. After some playing around and learning how to make/edit Icons, capture a screen shot and get the image on a webpage, I can finally now show my custom icons. Thanks for starting this post, it has been alot of fun playing around with these custom icons. Thanks for everyones explinations and tips, I had good success because of them. Waypoint Symbol 0-23.zip Edit: added link to zipped Icons.
2. My Picture Bill@Bill.org undefined, just testing the options. to see how things turn out. Hey look, there is a preview button, go figure. I see, you have to type the text and then hilight it and then choose the font or size or color options. I guess this is the right place to do this kind of practicing. An image too, that's great.
3. I have had a Legend and just upgraded to the Legend C. With the legend, saving an active track log of 10,000 points was compressed to 750 track points. See Here I tested the Legend C and so far a saved track has the same number of points as it did in the active track log. I haven't found any info on Garmins web site that indicates if a saved track log will hold and entire 10,000 points yet. I will have to just test it myself sometime soon. I think the 500 points indicated in the quote are the 500 waypoints the Legend C will hold. That is different from track points. I will do a test soon and get back with the results as soon as I can. I called Garmin today and confirmed that the Legend C does only save a maximum of 500 points in a Saved track instead of the 750 points that the blue legend does. But is saves 20 tracks instead of 10. Probably will never be a problem for what I do with the Legend C. So far my testing for the Legend C with an active track log of 402 points does not get compressed, it saved the whole thing. 509 points in the active log gets compressed to 327 points when saved. 681 points in the active log is compressed to 453 when saved. I’m guessing that if the active log is less than 500 points, the whole thing is saved and not compressed.
4. That is exactly right for the Course arrow, and to just say it again, the Course straight line is created from the point where you are standing to the destination at the moment you press the goto button. If you cancel the navigation and start over from a different location, you will have a new course line from the point where you are standing to the destination at the moment you press the goto button. I would highly suspect that you will find the bearing pointer on the navigation page much more useful for GeoCaching. I just have to say I liked your point of view on the trip computer page. That was some good insight with the heading and bearing data.
5. Sorry so long replying to this...You probably don't care at this point, but figured I'd send an update anyways. I ended up figuring it out a few minutes after I posted, and this was indeed the problem. My yellow Etrex doesn't have that difference, but I messed around with the Legend long enough and ended up stumbling on this setting. Anyhoo, I know it was 20 days ago, but just wanted to say "thanks" for the help. By default the Legend comes set to use the “Course” pointer, not the “Bearing” pointer. You probably already figured it out by now, but it needs to be set to use the “Bearing” pointer and you will get the result you are looking for.
6. I've been using a Legend and just upgraded to the Legend C. I noticed that in the Legend the batteries didn't fit to snug and I only had it shut off a couple of times. I bent the contacts out a little and it hasn't shut off since. In the new Legend C the batteries fit very snug and I wondered what the difference was. I noticed that behind all four battery terminal contacts, there was a small piece of foam that keeps the contacts pressed tight against each end of the battery. Putting a small piece of foam behind each terminal contact, would be an easy fix that should work great for anyone. Maybe a thin piece of weather strip foam that is sticky on one side would work great so it would stay stuck in place and not fall out or something else of the like.
7. I Think you would have to use the Trip Computer page and reset the stats at the same time you start a new track. Then the Trip Computer page could give you general info about distance and time. I don't see a way to see the kind of info you are looking for without loading the active track log into mapsource on a pc. The active log in the GPS will let you start and stop several tracks in the active log and puts different time stamps on them so when they are loaded into mapsource you get a set of tracks that were in the active log. You can then copy and past the track date from one track to the other if you want to combine the tracks to get one big track. You are right, if you save the track while it is in the GPS, you loose the time stamps. I hadn't noticed that before. I just went out and set the legend C to 10,000 points for a track and let it get 37% full. I then loaded the active log into MapSource and it had 3751 points. I then saved the active log in the GPS and loaded it into mapsource again. It compressed the 3751 points to 359 points with out the time intervals. Some of the smaller tracks I tested that only had about 50 points didn't do that. All 50 points in the active log were save when saving to a named track log in the GPS. I will have to do some more testing, maybe the tracks are not compressed unless the track gets over 750 points.

9. Yes, the new Legend C is quite different. I just upgraded from the blue Legend to the Legend C and it took me a while to warm up to how different they are. But I really do like the Legend C even though there are a couple of thing I miss about the blue one. After downloading and reading the manuals for both the legend C and the 60C, it is apparent that the new Legend C has been formatted in a similar way. It does have 24 Mb of memory and the audible alarms are very nice to have. The back light is totally great compared to the blue legend. The color is much better that the grey scale LCD too. I really like the multi color satellite page. I wish I would have know about this new color Legend for sale just 1 day earlier, It would have been a much easier buy than dealing with a rebate.
10. I too just ordered a Legend C on Sep 15 and got it on Sep 21st. I was/am worried about his rating too, so I e-mailed past customers via eBay. One replyed and said he got his rebate but it did take a good 8 weeks as indicated. Another replied and indicated that he didn't get his rebate because he bought his GPS before the rebate started, he didn't pay attention to the details. I put my rebate in the mail on Sep 22, so we will wait and see. I also sent two e-mails to redzuco before I made the purchase and got a reply to both. The rebate for the legend C is $50.00, so if I get it, the total cost (shipping included) will be $250.97
11. I'm sure the GPS is off in the demo mode. During a firmware/software upgrade, the instructions have you put it in demo mode also. I'll bet the reason is so the GPS mode is off.
12. My Legend C also shows the plug symbol when connected to the USB power. I have also noticed that the backlight always stays on too and doesn't time out when connected to the USB power.
13. What ever you do, DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM REDZUCO off of eBay. I had really bad dealings with that guy and if you checkout his feedback, you'll see lots of others who had similar problems. Besides that, even if you got the unit from him, I doubt that you'd ever see the $50 rebate. I've bought about five GPS units from GPSNow.com over the years and they're terrific. Their prices are really hard to beat if you include the cost of shipping. For most GPS units, you can get FedEx 2nd day air shipping from them for around $12, and if you order early enough, they guaranty that they will ship your package out the SAME day you order it (as opposed to a week or two later like Rudzuco does even after you pay him more for faster shipping! ). Good luck! Thanks for the advice. Money talks though, and I'm still really tempted. I will have to do some more home work and think some more on it.
14. Thanks, I will check these out. I have also found one on ebay for 279.99 + 21.00 shipping + 50.00 rebate. Item number: 5720650593 from Redzuco. Looks like CompuPlus wants 15.00 for shipping, Makes it 286.00
15. Yes, I do live in the States, but I'm not sure I want to get all of those extreas yet even at such a great price. I'm just looking for the best price on the legend color unit for now.
16. Who knows where the best online price is for a new etrex legend color? Hope it's ok to ask this kind of question here, if not, let me know.
17. We have a moving GeoCache that gets placed some where new each time it is found. So far we just have four famlies doing this together. I also had three rocks engraved that say GPS Rock #1 and 2 and 3. I take them out and place them and then let the kids go find them. We got a birthday present for a neighbor and made him go find it with the GPS. He had a lot of fun doing that.
18. You could always send your 60CS to me. if you don't think you will miss it to much. I'm using the regular legend and have really enjoyed it, but I have only been geocaching and using a GPS for about 6 weeks.
19. Totally totally great. I read this about a week ago and gave it a try today. Many many thanks for this tip and step by step instructions. It is working great for me. Thanks again.
20. Thanks for everyones help and the link to the other thread. I have some good ideas to work with now. HawkesNest
21. I wondering the samething too at first, but as mentioned, I would open up multiple files and highlight a waypoint in one file, press Ctrl+c (copy), change to the file I’m saving the waypoints too and press Ctrl+v (paste). I will have to download and try the GSAK software too.
22. I have been wondering how I could carry my eTrex legend, other that in my hand, yet still have it positioned to get good reception. I would like to have a way to carry it on my shoulder face up and be convent to take off and put back. I though I would see what others have tried by asking here. I have tried buttoning my shirt so that the lanyard is looped down around several buttons and then letting the eTrex hang just over my shoulder on my back. That works ok, but tends to slide off the side of my shoulder once in a while.
23. This method may not be possible in all terrain, but I thought I would get some opinions. When marking a waypoint for a cache, has anyone tried the method of getting the initial coordinates and then put the GPS in the navigate mode for that waypoint, while using the bearing pointer as you walk in a 30 to 40 foot circle around the cache and watching the bearing pointer to see if it points to the center of the circle where the cache is. You can then make manual adjustments to the coordinates of +/-.001 (+/- 6ft.) to get the arrow pointing closer to the cache. If you have tried this method, how does it compare to other methods of getting a good set of coordinates for a cache?
24. Got it, Thanks a bunch. Oh how such simple things get the best of us.
