  1. Have you seen the Garmin GPSMAP 296? Though pricy, this unit is AWESOME! The 296 also a marine and automobile navigation unit with voice guidance. The 296 also is a very nice looking unit. Here is a link to the 296 on GPS City: http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/62286.2....562823/296.html
  2. I'm not sure about the comparison between City Select V6 and Metroguide. However, I will say that City Select V6 does a great job of autorouting. Yes, V6 has shipped. I received and unlocked my V6 CD last week. I will say that I don't see much of a difference on the autorouting performance when compared to V5 (I'm still testing); however, V6 does add some features and more POIs. I would recommend V6.
  3. I ordered (from gpscity.com) my 76CS w/City Select V5 on June 13. My order arrived on June 17 (The day I unlocked V5). Yesterday, I received the V6 update CD from Garmin. I was prepared to pay the $75.00 to upgrade; however, when I unlocked the CD I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the upgrade was free.
  4. As far as portability is concerned, I would say that Garmin has come out with the Quest to compete with the Magellan Roadmate 500/700 and the Navman iCN630. The Quest is a sharp looking unit and I am very tempted to purchase one. I'm currently using my 76CS for automotive travel (which does an outstanding job); however, I prefer the horizontal profile of the Quest vs the vertical profile of the 76CS for automotive navigation. Voice guidance is not necessarily that important to me. Also, you can pre-order the Quest at gpscity.com for $509.00. A very good price IMO.
  5. I own a 76CS and I also am aware that I can purchase a Garmin GRB-21 DGPS receiver for my unit. My question is this....are there any hand-held GPSr's out there that feature GPS, WAAS and Coast Guard DGPS combined in one unit? If not, are you aware of any companies working on such a GPSr? Thanks.
  6. Need any help working on our mother in laws house? kidding LOL! Actually, I could have used some help the past couple of days. My Mother-in-law is VERY picky about things. I would say that I am an above average carpenter, but by no means an expert. She is very appreciative, though.
  7. This past Fathers Day my wife surprised me with a GPSMAP 76CS. I love the unit! Recently, I've been helping my wife's Mother out with some work on her home. My wife told me a couple of days ago how she really appreciates me helping out her Mother. My wife also said, she will make it up to me (of course, you know what I was thinking at the time. ). Anyway, my wife gave me a wrapped gift this morning to show her appreciation. I couldn't believe the gift. No, it's not another GPSr (I have two units at this time). It is a Uniden BC296D Digital Scanner! I'm freaking out! I've been wanting to replace my old Radio Shack hand-held scanner for some time. I also have had my eye on the BC296D. Well, my wife really did her homework. Anyway, for those of you who may be interested here is a link to the scanner: http://www.valcoelectronics.com/scanner/bc296d.htm The BC296D is a technological marvel, to say the least.

    Waas

Yes, look for satellite #35. It is always has been available for me while GPSing around Indy. In the Indy area, No. 35 is located in the southeastern sky, about 35-40 degrees above the horizon.
  9. I've had my Vista stored without batteries for about 6 months. I just installed new batteries and updated the firmware (3.60). I can't get the Vista to acquire satellites. After 30 minutes, still not one signal from the satellites. I also tried setting the new location, via the map, to my current location. Also, the date reads December 31, 2003. Any suggestions? Thanks.
  10. The Cobra website says that two of their units are 18 parallel channel. I didn't believe that 18 satellites are available by line of site at any particular position on the earth. Am I correct or does this indicate that the GPS units can track up to 18 satellites, if available. Perhaps, Cobra is looking into the future because of Europe's GPS system being launched in a couple of years. Also, I believe that the FAA will launch additional WAAS satellites in the future.
  11. This is my first post. I am new to geocaching. I have owned GPS units for about 4 years now; however, I have never went on a cache hunt yet. Though, I am going to go on my first hunt in the near future. I'm also trying to convince my wife to join me on the hunts. I just want to say a few things about the 76CS. I sold my old Street Pilot III on Ebay about three months ago. I thought I would upgrade to the SP 2610 or 2620 or perhaps the Magellan Roadmate 500 or 700. I used the SP III extensively, primarily with my job as business development manager for an environmental remediation company. I travel the country on a frequent basis and the SP III allowed me to navigate with confidence. Also, the SP III allowed me to become more efficient by spending more time with my clients and less time behind the wheel. Well, I have yet to upgrade to an automobile-specific GPS unit and I may not. A couple of weeks ago, I purhcased the 76CS. I currently own an Etrex Vista; however, I wanted a larger handheld unit with a color screen. I use my handheld units for hiking and biking (and soon for geocaching). I also purchased the automobile kit with the 76CS. I thought I would give the automobile navigation capabilities of the 76CS a shot. Well, to my surprise, I am very impressed with the 76CS performance. The 76CS performs better than my old SP III. I thought the smaller screen would be a problem, but I found the smaller screen to be very readable with clear brilliant colors. The City Select software also works very well in my opinion. Also, the lack of voice prompts with the 76CS isn't that big of a deal in my opinion. The audible tones are very sufficient. I also purchased the Titan III external antenna which I placed on the roof of my car. When traveling in downtown Indianapolis last week, among the tall buildings, the 76CS performed very well receiving strong signals (using the external antenna) from 6-7 satellites consistently. I have also seen the accuracy down to 6 ft. with WAAS enabled and while using the external antenna (with a lock on 9-11 satellites). The next big test will be in a couple of weeks when I travel to downtown Chicago on business. I am curious as to how the 76CS will perform among Chicago's skyline (not quite the same as Indy). Anyway, I just wanted to give my two cents on the 76CS. I don't believe that I will be purchasing an automobile nagivation-only unit, at least for now. I am extremely satisfied with the 76CS.
