  1. However, the direction heading will remain correct.
The direction bearing will be corect not the heading. The bearing is where you want to go. (assuming you have it set to go somewhere) The heading is the direction you are faceing.

The heading, as I said, will be reported correctly, regardless of how the GPS is held.

I think the difference of opinion comes about over your statement that "when you stop moving . . . the direction heading will remain correct."

I think you are saying, because you have been moving and it was able to determine a correct heading while you were moving, the device retains that heading value when you stop even though, technically, you have no heading because you're not moving.

I think jacobdnl read you to mean the device can determine a correct heading after you have stopped (aren't moving). If you did intend this then I disagree with you. It cannot determine a heading if you aren't moving. In fact you have no heading if you're not moving.

  2. It is a simple query. Any type, any container, etc. It accepts all the defaults except I selected the placed within the last week option. It has been returning the new caches in my area.

I did as you suggested I created a similar query with the only block checked for “I Own” and it does return my cache.

I confess I don’t understand that set of check boxes but none were checked and it’s been working. If I modify the query to check the I Own box it still doesn’t return my cache.

  3. You can make a separate home page for all your Geocaching pics and stories and add it to you profile.

He wants to add the pictures to his "gallery" -- not his profile.

There is a way to do this, but I suspect TPTB might frown on it. Create a travel bug and immediately archive it. Then upload your images to the archived bug's logs.

  4. I realized today, I'm always careful to carry it with the antenna forward, even when I'm not watching it. I got it stuck in the weaselbrain that if I carried it butt-first, it would think it was moving backwards.

But that isn't so, is it?

Err . . Have you tried turning it around to see?

It will give the correct bearing and heading regardless of the unit's orentation. But, one particular screen on my unit has a fixed arrow that only points it the correct direction if I point the top of the unit in my direction of my movement. So, I wasn't entirely sure what you were asking.

What I'm getting at is, it doesn't care if it's upside down or facing left or what, does it?

It probably matters what position it's in for antenna sensitivity/sattlite signal. My Magellan is much more sensitive if it points up.

  5. I just like the photos as part of a user's gallery.  I guess I was just looking for an open ended option to upload gallery photos.

I'm still not clear, I understood you wanted them on "your profile page". You can add them to your profile page they way discussed. I don't think there's a way to add them to your gallery except via the logs.

  6. If you are asking mechanically how to get them on your profile page you use HTML code like that used to create webpages.

I find the easiest way to do this is to use FrontPage (comes with Internet Explorer) to create the HTML code. Then I copy it and paste it where I want it.

    Here's an example:

    <img border="0" src="http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/display/dc725373-c5ba-4a5b-9ba8-ff18113af642.jpg" width="120" height="181">

The above code pasted into your profile will give this result dc725373-c5ba-4a5b-9ba8-ff18113af642.jpg

  7. I always take photos when we find the cache.  Often the photo would give away the final location (example, the tree it's hidden in), so I feel it's wrong to attach it to the logs, but would like them to appear in my profile gallery.

    JImD

Personally, I wouldn't post photos, even in my profile, if they directly identify the cache. After you have 20 or so finds and you post anonymous images of cache locations that may be Okay. I am planning on doing this on my own website, but even there I won't link the image to its cache identity.

These are my opinions/practices. On indirect image posts like this we probably need input from some more senior cachers.

  8. Good question, I just uploaded a couple pic's where we are with the cache open but the pic's don't show where the cache is hid.  Did I do a bad thing

Not in my opinion. Lots of people, me included, post pictures of the cache itself without tipoffs to its location.

    Here's an example

  9. If a cache owner says you, in addition to signing the log, you have to email back a codeword to log the find, so be it. Their cache, their rules. I have an (easily) encrypted cache, and I only accept find logs that are posted in the same code. My rule.

Why do you want to take that control out of the hands of the cache owners?

I’m sorry, I didn’t follow how that relates to counting the same find multiple times?

  10. While new Moving Caches are not accepted, there are existing ones still out there. It's common for moving caches to be logged by the same person many times, even by the cache owner.

Clearly a exception would have to be made for moving caches.

  11. If, as you say, there’s no reason “for having the biggest smiley count” it suggests the count’s meaningless.  If it has no meaning it’s not clear to me why the count is kept.

It's part of the game for some caches to log more than once.

But, said the other way ‘round, if the count doesn't matter why would it matter if it is limited to one per cache. It seems like it's only because the count does matter that people want to log a cache more than one time. If it didn't matter they wouldn't care whether they could log multiple finds for one cache or not.

I think I’m having trouble explaining my confusion.

  12. There may be a handful of legitimate reasons to log multiple finds for one cache, but these aren't them. These are practices that degrade the integrity of legitimate finds.

    Jamie

Degrade the integrity? Please. Give me a break. What is the prize for having the biggest smiley count? It's all about fun. People are having a lot of fun doing this one, and logging four smileys for it is only part of that fun.

That’s confusing to me. If, as you say, there’s no reason “for having the biggest smiley count” it suggests the count’s meaningless. If it has no meaning it’s not clear to me why the count is kept. If the count is meaningless how is “logging four smileys . . is . . part of that fun?”

Would you feel the same way if I placed a cache and said I wanted lots of people to come, so to make sure it’s fun they get a bonus -- they can log 5 finds for finding my cache? If the smiley count is irrelevant it seems like it shouldn’t matter how many finds are logged for a single cache – it would be up to me and the people who find it.

I’m sincerely not trying to flame you, I’m just having a hard time reconciling your position that extra find count doesn't matter, with Groundspeak keeping a record of total finds and your statement that people enjoying adding to their smiley count.

  13. I also want to keep the name.  Therefor,  reforming a different puzzle and experience, I would allow repeaters the ablility to refind it.

Maybe I don’t understand what you’re saying, but if a cache keeps the same name it would show as already found on my list and I'd never know to go back.

This way I get to preserver all the old logs and thoughts of cachers, and yet allow them to find the new cache and experience! SF1

If it’s a different puzzle and a different experience it doesn’t seem like the logs would have any relevance to it and might confuse cachers who were reading the logs and thought the comments were relevant to finding the current cache. I sometimes jump around in the logs, not uncommonly jumping to the first few made.

Sorry if I misunderstood what you were saying.

  14. Feature Suggestion

I have a suggestion for the “future features” list.

From what I’ve read it isn’t considered Kosher to return to a previous find and log it as a find a second time (or a third or . . .). I’ve seen cases of this recently while reviewing logs. If it’s true that this is not permitted why not make it impossible for a cacher to log the same find twice. I’ve read the same thing about logging your own cache as a find, so while you’re at it you could make that impossible too.

If I’m wrong and these practices are acceptable ignore this suggestion.

  15. if you’re in an unfamiliar location how do you know the declination so you can correct for it?

Of course, if your GPS will show both True and Magnetic then switch between and note the difference in bearing to the destination.

Now why didn't I think of that? I did wonder why GPSrs don't have a feature that gives it since they obviously know it and many people use compasses in conjunction with there GPSr.
