  1. A very nice view of the whole thing... I like that. Also, you can't use the number of "angst" posts in the forum as an accurate measure of how good cachers are. For every 1 "Hey this AppleHead thought it was ok to sign the outside of the container" type post that gets posted... there could probably be 1000 "Hey CacherX replaced my cache exactly as he found it" type posts. But people are far more likely to come here to gripe than to praise. I think that's human nature. And since most (if not all) cachers are human... I wouldn't expect any less... er more... of them either.
  2. another thing in common... even the most experienced golfer can still get his balls caught in the rough once in awhile.
  3. ... and seldom appreciated by many. Moderating is not an easy task. I do not envy your job on a board this large and this diverse in "personality types". c(_)
  4. HTML tags, you jest!!! Having it on the form will remind people to add the information by virtue of a field to enter, that way you reach critical mass. Simply look at my linked example and try to grasp the concept. Hermit I was simply offering you a solution to get *you* what you want without having to wait the 3.7 years before anyone with the power to do so even thinks about whether to do it or not... and then decides not to. I totally grasp the concept. But it *can* be quite a chore to just add a custom field to a forum package... sometimes. good luck, anyway
  5. I've always thought (and have mentioned it several times) that it is very strange that you are required to enter some text when you pick up a trackable but not when you drop it. Generally speaking, I would tend to have more to say when the trackable is ending its stay with me than when it is just begining. I view this as a flaw in the user experience and would welcome a change such as you suggested.
  6. You can append it to the end of the "location" field in your profile settings. However, you need to put the HTML break tag in to make it look right in the forum... but your profile page will not display it right. depends on which is more important to you. But why not just add it to your signiture?
  7. Use a http://dodgeit.com/ account and then just look at the RSS feed of your email account.
  8. Way back when many people (including myself) screamed and moaned about the rediculousness of the (then Beta) Waymarking.com site, it was repeatedly told to us that many of the features from that site would find their way back into Geocaching.com and we would love them. One of those features was the concept of "multiple home locations" that could easily be switched between. However, I don't think that feature (or any of them, really) have found its way into this site. Maybe some day.
  9. On one hand, having an "impoosible" goal might ensure it never reaches that goal and therfore will travel around forever trying to get there... rather than just getting there and then disappearing. On the other hand, having an "impossible" goal might make it disappear somewhere else anyway because no one wants to pick up a TB that is headed to a place with no caches or where cachers can get executed.
  10. Am I the only one that doesn't really see a difference? I think it looks pretty much the same as it was. Not that this is a bad thing as I had no complaints about how it looked before. However, if it runs faster then that's all the improvement you need to make it time well spent. The only real difference I see is that I have to scroll past more stuff to get to the actual cache listings. If the email starts shifting the focus from "new caches" to "any new stuff that somebody might be interested in" then maybe it should just be called the Weekly Newsletter instead of the Weekly Cache Notification. I would just hate to see the original intent of the email get pushed further and further down the list. I would rather get two emails... one with just new caches and then one as just the other stuff. Then I can read the newsletter when I get around to it as that info might not get "outdated" as quickly as the new cache list. But that is just me. I'll put my helmet back on and wipe the drool from my chin.
  11. I generally scan right passed all the stuff at the top and go straight for the new caches... then I scan those until they get about 20 miles away and then delete it. You could have been offering all sorts of free stuff at the bottom and I'd never see it. If anything new is added (like Waymarking categories) it should be at the bottom. The further I have to scan down to get to the new caches, the more likely I'll just uncheck the box and save y'all a few bits of bandwidth. If the content was customizable, that'd be cool. But that just sounds like more work than I'm guesing you're gonna want to put into it. I'd vote for a basic overhaul to help with whatever is ailing it and then more development efforts to be spent on other improvements.
  12. But then who wants to send people caching in a pile of trash in the woods? Or did I miss the sarcasm in your post?
  13. I have two different PQs that center from my home coords and both of them are set up by just entering my home cords, rather than choosing the "Home Coords" option. I've had them for some time so I don't recall if or why I set them up that way, but perhaps it was due to this bug. However, I also don't generally change the radius value from the default as my limits usually involve the number of caches. Both "home" PQs generate appropriate lists so it no big deal to me. But I supose if I needed to make a new one, I might run into this.
  14. Sorry, since there was nothing said to the contrary, I assumed that we were talking about only forum posts. If a lot of people contacted you out side of the forums then I stand corrected. And yes there does seems to be a bit of a bug with it. I was able to reproduce this... only with a new PQ.
  15. That does not happen to me. Perhaps you can post a link to the PQ builder... I forget how, but there is a way to post a link so that others get a "pre filled PQ" form that they could then save as their own... its not actually *your* PQ. Someone might be able to see if there is something with that particular settings to cause the bug. for what's its worth... 2 responders is not exactly "a lot" and neither of then accused you of "doing it wrong". The first just asked for more info... much like your first post in this thread. But there does seem to be a bug with "Home Coords" with "By state"
  16. I'm sure the amount of storage required would be rediculous, but it would be interesting to have the PQ file saved on the GC server for say 24 hrs after it was run... with the "download" button added to the vast array of buttons already on the "Build PQs" page. That certainly would not make them "on demand" but it would allow people to get them for a short period of time in case of an email snafu or something. well... let's see... my last 5 PQs were ~400KB each (zipped with 400 caches). so worst case for any given PM would be 5 (max PQs in a day) * 500KB (per zipped PQ of 500 caches) = 2500KB or 2.5MB of storage. And then 10,000 (arbitrary number to represent Premium Members) * 2.5MB (to store the max 5 PQs on server) = 25GB 25GB of storage is actually not that much really. And if they had a shelf life of 24 hrs then they would not have tons of growing files hanging around. Even if every PM downloaded every one of their PQs every day, that would be 25GB of bandwidth... again, not that crazy. Overall, I'd think the download option would be a nice addition. I might even forgo the email if I could just come in later and download it. They could even just make it a third choice to go with "email to account email" and "email to this email:" so that a person would have to choose. This way they don't waste email bandwidth AND download bandwidth.
  17. "switch to gmail" is not the solution to every problem... any more than "switch to FireFox" or "switch to Linux" is. back to the OP, I think part of the overall PQ waiting game in quitely hidden in this statement: just in case of what? a major caching emergency?
  18. just one more reason I'll never move from California... to be in the same TZ as Groundspeak, thus never having to calculate what time it is there. However, Mr. Lipe makes a very good (if not off-topic) argument for stagering the PQ generation time to start at "midnight where you are" (or "where the PQ is for"... though this is not as ideal since people often run PQs for distant trips and that can confuse even more)
  19. no body has ever provided a good reason why people get ALL emails from here, except PQs. I don't believe they are being selectivly treated as SPAM when others aren't. Also, this has happened on PQs of with like 20 caches in them... not exactly a large email. And yes, I've always had them zipped... who doesn't? lol
  20. ok... not only that but I'm prety sure that I marked to have these PQs run on Firday... and while I can appreciate that they were run a little late (just after midnight.. so technically they ran on Saturday) they never arrived. But now when I try to run them again I am being refused due to being over the limit. WTF?!? I'm about 2 for 8 on sucessful PQs for the past year. I run so few that it really pisses me off that those few don't arrive.
  21. This is not the first time this has happened. I had 4 PQs run around 12 AM this morning and none of them have made it into my email box. Yes, I have checked any SPAM boxes No, I don't use Outlook.... I use Thunderbird No, I don't use hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, Gmail or any of those other crappy free email accounts. I use the email that is associated with my own domain provided by my hosting provider and they do not do those crazy email rejections. Yes, I do receive other emails from gc.com.... just no PQs Anything else?
