  1. Yup, it depends on what kind of container it is, what material the container is made out of. Then, there's some very good high quality silicone that's clear, you should be able to pick up a small tube at Menards or Home Depot or Lowes, etc.
  2. i find this is most often the response given by people granting themselves license to say things that they know are going to be offensive. a word about the chimp thing: while some caricatures of people may be made to look chimpish on account of an exaggeration of that person's features, care ought to be exercised in some cases because racist movements of every stripe have been comparing their "inferiors" to chimps for a long, long time. it's kind of a code indicating that the person making the comparison does not consider the inferior race to be fully human and for that reason one ought to be careful. whites in the US are not the only people to have portrayed other races as being chimp or ape-like. there isn't a history of rich white people being portrayed as subhuman and ape-like. if you want to caricature bush or homer simpson or me as ape-like, that's not going to tap any long-existing racist themes. there is actually a history of typing poor immigrant white people in the US as apes, particularly the irish and italians. segments of japanese culture will caricature races they feel to be inferior as apes, as well. but the whole apes-as-african-wildlife thing is what i think makes it so easy to make little digs at black people. racism can be very subtle; feeding little commentaries about people not as good as us into the mainstream. i really think that instead of telling people to get a sense of humor it's probably best to tidy up our language and our vocabulary of images. if we mean no harm, we should not be using language and images that have traditionally been used to cause harm. you will notice that at no time have i couched my thoughts in terms of not permitting people to behave this way; i consistently place the responsibility for decent behavior on people themselves. people not wishing to appear racist should not say racist things. people not wishing to appear racist and dishonest should not say racist things and then pretend they're not racist. people wishing to appear racist should by all means come right out and say so. people wishing to call them out on this behavior should feel equally free to call it what it is. Wow...... Then be offended.
  3. Are you a premium member? I believe that's the only way to do it....
  4. There. I fixed your post. I got news for ya. Geocaching was already political when I joined in 2003 so you can save the blame on this thread. Yes Snoogans. For me.
  5. the way in which the image was enhanced was the racist part. It's not racist simply because he is black. when you take a person (or in this case president) who has been hounded repeatedly because of his race, then features are exagerated which are indicative of his race, then it is in bad taste. Why am I having to explain racism? Are you serious?..... Do you know what a caricature is?........ Here. I can't believe I have to explain a caricature to you..... Caricature: a representation of a person that is exaggerated for comic effect ; A caricature can refer to a portrait that exaggerates or distorts the essence of a person or thing to create an easily identifiable visual likeness ; A representation in which the subject's distinctive features are exaggerated..... So, when you read this, what was posted is a caricature. The definition of a caricature itself means it's poking fun at the features of a person!!!!!
  6. I find your avatar racist and objectionable. It makes fun of white people with pudgy cheeks. I know people who have eating disorders and you're making fun of them. Shameful. I'm going to start a thread to get RaeRae7133 removed from the message board. Seriously people... Give me a fraggin' break...... You can't please everybody...... Someone will find something offensive in everyday life....... Deal with it. Go find some geocaches w/ your friends and family. Joke around. Take goofy pictures. Post them on the internet. Have fun.
  7. Ding-ding-ding. We have a winner: people CHOOSE to be offended too much. Sure it's an image thing for Geocaching.com, but at the same time, it wasn't racist or offensive..... If it were my face up there, people would laugh, it's just because it's the Presidents face that we're even talking about this..... I will say that if the cache called for a caricature of the person who found the cache, then this person shouldn't get credit for the find, UNLESS it truly IS Barack H. Obama who found the cache... Then, I say, let him have the find, and I hop he doesn't find the picture of himself racist......
  8. K-Fox - agreed. I love when it's Bush or anyone else it's ok, in fact, we should laugh and get the joke, but when it's the great Obama, it's offensive...... HOW is this racist? I think the term racist needs to be explained here, because that picture of Obama is not racist. Posting a picture of Barack w/ blown out of proportion features does not make the picture racist. I thought Bush like a monkey was funny. I think Obama like a monkey was funny. This picture, although I wouldn't have posted it, doesn't mean it's racist..... BTW - race isn't tied to everything on the entire planet... and now, thanks to this thread, now Geocaching has turned political...... Thanks.....
  9. I saw that episode. It was ok... I wish the theme of the episode was more geocaching related though... Maybe a killer who hides caches, and the whole episode could've been about geocaching!!!!!! Not just a small scene...
  10. LOL!!! I bet I could make some $$$$$ selling caching smilies! Like carbon credits!!!! It would be great! I could take the smilies from people who have too many and sell them to those who need more! It doesn't really reduce the amount of smilies out there, it just shifts them from one person to another (similar to carbon credits, it doesn't reduce the amount of carbon, just gives one person who uses more carbon the ability to pay for more opportunity to use carbon....) I know, not quite the same as carbon credits, but still worth a shot! Hey, don't sell your idea short. It makes just as much sense as carbon credits. Thanks....... I think......

  12. I have to say geocaching is a great "sport" because you can do it by yourself or w/ a group... Wait... That sounds dirty...... Anyway, Fester, I completely agree w/ you, caching w/ a small group completely rules. As long as the people in your group get along and don't mind if the initial find is sometimes shared..... Some people like to find the caches themselves, me, I like to work as a group to find the cache. Sometimes I find it, sometimes others. AND it's fun messing w/ friends!!!! Like finding it, logging it, and then just standing by it for a few minutes until they notice you're not doing any searching and figure out that you've already found the cache... LOL
  13. Gotta agree w/ the chadknower here. I think technically, you don't need a GPS unit to get credit, all you need is to sign the log sheet. But the geo part of geocaching..... This is one of the cheapest hobbies to get into now-a-days, you can pick up a cheapie GPS unit for under 100 bucks, a used one definitely for under 100 bucks (USD). I'd say, if you like to find them w/out the GPS unit, kewl, but it's nice to have that option if you get to the middle of nowhere and can't find the cache from memory or from the satellite images from google.maps.... LOL
  14. Sounds intruiging. I agree the google-earth mappers could take the easy route, but if that's what they wanna do, then that's what they wanna do.....
  15. I would've just asked all the muggles to leave the area..... Fine.... I would've done the same thing, logged DNF w/ notes about why, then go back later....
  16. Sorry for your troubles June16!!!!! hopefully the cache will be removed soon. It doesn't look like the cache has been found more than a few times in the past few months.... Luckily it hasn't received more traffic!!! It's been there since 2007?..... One option could be: when you see cachers searching at night, go running at them w/ a chainsaw and a mask over your head..... kidding......... kidding.........
  17. Hippies took the "peace" sign from the military, it used to mean V for Victory...... Gays took the rainbow and now people see rainbow colors and immediately think gays...... Obviously not the same connotation as the swastika..... but similar.... One group of people adopts a symbol, phrase or gesture and give it their own meaning. I still don't see a problem w/ using a Nazi symbol on a cache w/ that theme...... If it were me, I'd probably use the Cobra symbol from G.I. Joe.... But that's just me... I might also use the Decepticon symbol from Transformers....
  18. I see a difference between someone using a Swastika as their avatar vs. someone using a Swastika on a cache for stories sake.... The cache was telling a story, but usually a persons avatar is something that represents the person. something like that... does that make sense?
  19. The symbol is not evil. A symbol is incapable of evil. A symbol can only represent. What that symbol represents to you is evil and I do not for one second doubt that. But it is a matter of confusing the messenger with the message. Nazism was one of the most evil, twisted places the human mind has gone in written history. But the swastika is not Nazism. That said... your feelings are your feelings, and I can't really argue to change them, so thanks for letting them be known. Exactly what I was gonna say. A symbol can't be evil..... Anyway, I think people are forgetting that we're talking about a themed cache here. If the cache was pirate themed and there were skull and crossbones on the cache, it would make sense. We're talking about a cache theme where nut-job, crazy nazi's are trying to do something evil and it's up to us to stop them!!!!! Just like a movie, you don't have to go see it if you don't want to..... I think this is a great idea for a cache. I would also not have any issue w/ someone putting together a cache w/ crosses on it, and a storyline about people trying to kill Christ and we have to stop them, or Muhammad, or Buhda, or Tom Cruise or whatever.... Pick your poison. If it's a good cache and the CO isn't suggesting the kidnapping or murder of a current living Jew or something, I seriously don't see the problem here........ There's far worse in the world than the story about narrow-minded, stupid, lame-brained, thick-skulled, un-intelligent, Nazis...... IMHO of course.
  20. You'll go through a LOT of money (paper and toner for your printer) not using a GPS device...................... I usually download the info to my GPS unit, then keep a small spiral-bound notebook where I write down other info about the cache, then, when I find the cache, I sign the log, then write down in my notebook what I took and left and anything else to help me remember the cache location or the hike to the cache....
  21. What is it then?? Statistically insignificant data. Thanks Chad. That's what I was gettin' at.
  22. LOL! that's amusing. What's more amusing is that I just read this post and sang the song to myself as I was reading it....
  23. I guess I'd probably toss up a red flag when the cache listing said small or regular size and then I found a micro..... Actually... I probably wouldn't have even been looking in a tree for a regular sized geocache..... LOL, so good for you for even finding a micro where a regular should've been....
  24. The comment about "padding the find stats"... I only see that being the case when a person has 20 finds and goes to hide 70 caches.... See what I mean?.... Otherwise, some of the geocachers on this forum have fraggin' 1000's of finds, some in the 10,000's..... So, if they've hid 100 and logged them all, I don't think it's really padding their find stats.....
  25. Done. 33 am I. The survey doesn't ask for kids less then 12 years old though..... Sure, they'd be w/ parents or guardians or whatever, but I think you're missing a ton of cachers in your survey. I bet you'd find that the 31-40 would have the most kids 3-12 w/ them, and the 41-50 would probably have the most kids 13-20 w/ them.....
