  1. I don't know if that's true. It depends on whether the gsak macro supports loading the caches onto your specific nuvi.
  2. Here ye be - http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com/
  3. Offroad is under "navigation" I believe. You should read everything here which will explain how to use your nuvi's settings and how to also use it paperlessly - http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com/ To the person above, what kind of paperless units are you refering to exactly in the $200 range? I thought they were all $300+.
  4. There's actually a 60csx gsak macro out there that allows you to load most of the cache info (if not all?). I don't know a ton about it but do a little snooping around and you should be able to learn more about it (start with google maybe).
  5. I used to email my reviewer and give him/her coordinates and ask if there were any other caches too close, but recently I was asked by him/her to instead create the cache page (which has the coordinates in it) and WRITE in the notes of it to the reviewer that I just want to know whether or not this spot is available (and not to publish it yet). For some reason, doing it this way is easier for them to check.
  6. Since you're a premium member, you could be downloading pocket queries. Then you can then upload them using the steps explained here: http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com/
  7. I don't really care to cache with the nuvi, just use it to drive to the cache location. I do like your idea and I will keep it in mind. My idea: Load up 15-20 caches (No hints, no descriptions) that I am going to hunt in the nuvi, press go for the nearest one and then drive. I do that now with my -40, but the screen is too small to use it as a driving GPS (otherwise the -40 is perfect) I still think the best and easiest way to do this is according to the link posted.
  8. Yup, but satnav units are great to use (and some of those problems can be avoided with cases, lanyards, external battery packs, etc) while you're looking for a handheld gps.
  9. Actually, geocoins aren't for trade, they are travelers - you take them from one cache and put them in another, you don't need to trade anything to move them. Yeah, let us know what the satnav is, if it's a garmin nuvi or a tomtom, they can be somewhat effective geocaching machines.
  10. Do you already have an auto satnav unit? If so, give us the make and model and we might be able to help you learn how to use it as you're looking for a handheld unit. Also, the SWAG ("stuff we all get") you listed for trading looks great, but if any of it is worth more than a few bucks ($US) I wouldn't use it as SWAG. Most SWAG that you'll find has little value, but is just fun to find. Welcome!
  11. Yes, I have changed the format in Google Earth. With this feature in Google MAPS, though, you can't unfortunately change the format.
  12. It appears that Google Maps has just added a feature that allows you to see a small box under your cursor showing the lat/lng of where you move your cursor AND/OR allows you to place a marker on google maps under which a box will appear with lat/lng coordinates. I always had to use a workaround before (or use google earth), so this is great. The coordinate format is a bit different that the one used on geocaching.com, but there are billions of online converters out there to see the coordinates in whatever format you wish. This is how to set it up: 1. Go to google maps and click on "New" in the upper right hand side of the browser. 2. Scroll down and enable "LatLng Tooltip" (for continues coordinates wherever you put your cursor), and/or "LatLng Marker" (which allows you to right click on the map and place a marker with a box under it showing GPS coordinates). Awesome new feature!
  13. Hi, I've followed the instructions on that link and it's fine till I get to: "Now here's the nice part, launch GSAK and when you're at the main program screen, go and find the zip file you downloaded earlier. CLICK AND DRAG this zip file from the folder it is in, and DROP IT ONTO THE GSAK program it will import all the data instantly!!" I drop it in and it says there is no matching file and the import has been aborted. Help! Hm, not sure what that could be. Your zip file that you're dropping into gsak is the pocket query .gpx file, right? I've never had this error, but if you can't figure it out, try asking or searching in the gsak forums here - http://gsak.net/board/index.php? Also, what is the exact wording of the error message it's giving you?
  14. Actually paperless caching (which is loading all of the cache information onto the gps) is no problem with the nuvi (either for the 205 or the 260). See this webpage for step by step instructions - http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com/ Also, you can see the distance to the cache just fine using the directions in the above link. The real shortcomings of the nuvi are that it isn't waterproof/shockproof and that it has an internal battery that only lasts 4 or 5 hours. To try and compensate for these shortcomings, I attached a lanyard to my nuvi - http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...p;#entry4114324 (post 29) And I made an external battery pack so that my nuvi can run on AA's, giving it over 16 hours of battery life per 4 AA's - http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...amp;mode=linear
  15. Could you provide us with a link? I'd be interested in seeing the list.
  16. Sorry I can't help the OP with his query, but you have interested me with this comment. I have a Nuvi 205 but it doesn't have an external SD card. I load the co-ords for caches straight from the Garmin website, or individually from the cache pages on geocaching.com. I've found that the nuvi's memory does get full and they stop loading on to it even though it looks from the websites that they are being loaded. It seems to be full when "Favourites" has around 36 pages- so that's 144, this of course includes things like friends' addresses as well as the caches. A couple of times, planning a trip to see friends, I have tried to download caches near where they live (100 or so miles away) and they have come on to the nuvi for a couple of days but by the time I needed them they had disappeared. Some of them did appear again at a later date when I had found some of the local caches and deleted them, but others have never re-appeared. Could this be a fault with my Nuvi, do you think? Should I query it with Garmin? Loading caches as POIs and not favorites is how you can virtually load an unlimited amount. See this webpage for directions on how to do so - http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com/index.html
  17. It looks like that muggle might not be a muggle after all. It looks like she's either a fellow geocacher or a muggle being introduced to geocaching.
  18. Haha, this is great. But i'm confused about the book he has - that can't fit in the tuppeware so it's not a log book. Is the book where he wrote down the cache info? Probably so, right, because that's an etrex if I'm not mistaken and is consequently not paperless.
  19. I just use my initials on those. B.S. - How are they going to know whether it's your initials or a description of the cache? hahaha

    Camo Tape

Army supply stores almost always have camo duct tape, I'm sure there's at least one army supply store near you.
  21. I attached a lanyard to my 255w - you can see a photo an explanation of it here http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...amp;mode=linear in post #29. I carry it in a soft case in my pocket or backpack and them when I pull it out to use it I put the lanyard around my wrist.
  22. I hate it when people classify altoids tins as smalls as well, they are definitely micros.
  23. I'm missing something here because when I load poi's or clear my poi's it has no effect on my favorites. Favorites and poi's are 2 different things.
  24. Technically you can geocache with the ipod touch but you have to have a gps module attached to it, like orangegadget's (https://www.orangegadgets.com/ ) and have it jailbroken and have maps loaded onto it. Even after all that effort and money it still has bad battery life, isn't as accurate as handheld gps units, and is definitely not rugged or waterproof. As mentioned above, it's great to use in conjunction with a handheld gps so that you can go paperless, but it's not a great option on its own.
  25. Once you have loaded the POI GC numbers in favorites how do you get rid of them? I hope it is not one by one. You can also use poi loader to clear off all of the POIs, if that's what you are trying to do.
