This is just copy and paste from your archive log.

Surely that is sad but I do not understand why you post this in the forums: do you have any question or do you want to tell us something more?

I think we all know about the danger of cache boxes being stolen. Recently I had to notice that a special logbook was stolen from a tied amo can (it is still there) several metres up in a tree. That's geocaching life I am afraid.

So what do you want to achieve with your post?

She doesn't have a question. She's just sharing and putting it out for discussion on a Discussion Board.

  2. Perhaps because people do not feel the need to convince you of what the validity of their experience as much as you seem to need it.

I have asked you politely in the past to please refrain from personal attacks. In light of this quite personal attack, I ask again.

I do not see the personal attack, personally.

But I will say that just because someone has not hidden a cache (even though the lack of hides under a particular user account proves nothing), this does not invalidate one's opinion on what proper cache maintenance should look like.

  3. Another person noted the following

I want control of my messages. I want to be able to search through them, sort them, delete them, save them, forward them, cc and bcc them... my email allows me to do that. I don't see what the MC adds to that... all it does is subtract. I don't know how many messages you now have in your MC, but try searching through them to find something from a few weeks ago. Good luck.

I liked what they said so much, I had to share.

  4. Is this "discussion group" on moving caches in general, or only this one?

If only this one, imagine what the forums would look like if every cache that had issues had their own "discussion group".

The subject of this thread is "50 State Traveler (GC4241) Discussion This is a discussion group for the moving cache 50 State Traveler". I think that answers your first question. As to your second question...this isn't "every cache". This is one particular cache that is apparently subject to a bit more drama than most and some locals wisely decided to take the discussion here. Seems like a good idea to me.

  5. Dinosaur here*. I have been caching nearly 6 years and I have over 13,000 finds. I host and attend events as often as possible. I hide caches in the parks around my house. I cache with friends whenever possible but I do enjoy a nice quiet hike in the woods with my dog. I have literally told hundreds (if not thousands) of people about Geocaching as a volunteer field guide for the MN Outdoor Youth Expo. Not everyone that visited my booth became an active Geocacher but there are quite a few that can trace their roots back to talking to me during those events. I am active on the MN, WI and CO Facebook pages. I have made a lot of friends and a few very good friends through caching. It's become a passion...even an addiction.

I have spent thousands of dollars over the years to go Geocaching. I've taken trips across the country just to cache. Gas, plane tickets, hotels, car rentals, food, campsites, gear, medical bills, etc... It adds up quickly but I wouldn't trade the experiences I've had for anything. Well...almost anything.

I also used to be somewhat active here on these forums but I left in disgust a little over 2 years ago. I, too, have only recently returned.

We old timers bring something to caching that just cannot be quantified on a spreadsheet or algorithm or quarterly report. By and large we are the ones that hide the caches, we are the ones that host events and we are the ones that will still be here next week, next month and next year. We are the ones that made this hobby what it is today.

We are also human so we are not perfect. We sometimes do and say things that might be questionable. Or sometimes our words get in our way of what we are attempting to convey. I'm not trying to cover for those that have gotten a warning, a timeout or worse. I'm also not here to knock Groundspeak, its employees or its volunteer network.

Knowschad is right and it doesn't even pain me to say it. The forum regulars ARE your volunteers just as much as mods and the reviewers. We might not be recognized as such but it's true nonetheless. We are all in this together.

*Yes, at the tender age of 38 I consider myself a dinosaur mostly because I rarely use my phone to cache. I like my dedicated GPSr.

    Very well written TD!

  6. The thing I don't get, is how do people enjoy cache goals when they know they really didn't meet them?

I've considered logging a cache a day ahead in order to fill in my cache-a-day calendar, but realized that would ruin the entire thing for me. Why not just fill it all in? It would make it worthless.

Yes when we fill in the wrong day to get something (like a streak) then we are cheating ourselves (in addition to others, as Knowschad and BC have mentioned).

So do these people cheat themselves all the time already and so one more doesn't make a difference? I just don't get it. It would make the stats worthless to myself, which is who matters the most. Where is the integrity to ones self?

I will miss Mr. Yuck too. He had some clear-headed opinions around here and had some great information to share. I wonder if there is some actual guideline to give people a permanent ban. There are people on this forum who are regularly disruptive and they seem to not get one. I don't understand that either.

Is integrity dead in these United States? Does no one have a conscience anymore?

I blam the this childishness on the fact there are way too many challange caches out there now.

This Mr.Yuck situation has me feeling disillusioned. So much so, I am taking a break from these forums for a while. I encourage anyone else feeling disillusioned to also take a break.

Some argue that there are too many caches of all types. But while it may affect how some choose to play, one should not let it affect how you enjoy the game. If it stops being fun, I'll stop playing. I don't want others to affect my enjoyment so I ignore them as much as possible.

I heard that a couple of other forum regulars were also given the permanent boot in the forums here. If such actions is meant to be a deterrent, they should be made known to those who participate in the forums. Some of us are confused why certain people are banned while others are not. Color me disillusioned as well, but I neither encourage nor discourage anyone from participating in the forums here. As I had said before, I learned a lot here, and in my own small way I hope I had helped a few people with technical issues. I had taken a voluntary break in the past, and I think I will take one again.

The fate of Mr.Yuck, Tozainamboku and 4wheelinfool has me really bothered too. This will be my last post for a while.

  7. Of course, we can all blame it on smart phones or Mr. Yuck (I'm going to miss him around here).

Wait, what happened to Mr Yuck (or the cacher formerly known as TheWhiteUrkel)?

Yeah .... me too. He always seemed to have good words of wisdom.

I have a friend that was doing some streak or other, and he just left unfound caches in the area so he could go out the days he needed a cache, and not have to go far.

I thought Mr Yuck always contributed to a positive forum community experience. He was a wealth of knowledge about geocaching and forum history. Sad day. I'd sure like to know why!

  8. Well then maybe this thread should be moved to the regional forum to better expose your question to locals that may know the answer.

    What an excellent idea.

Thank you. Thank you very much!smiley-love0063.gif

  9. Well then maybe this thread should be moved to the regional forum to better expose your question to locals that may know the answer.

  10. Actually it has nothing to do with work , I have searched and already have a list of the 5/5 in my area . For those of us that actually cache and don't spend all of our time on the forum I was basically asking opinions . I have one that I do not think is difficult to find so it has a low difficulty rating , but over the years it's been out a lot of people do . Real world experience is what I'm looking for not a computer search anyone with a lap top can do that .. Thank you

That's the explanation you should have given in the first place, if you wanted people to understand what you wanted.

  11. Can we get an active list of the hardest caches in New England?

Yea that's not really what I'm looking for, I want to know the ones no matter the rating that no one can find.

Run a Pocket Query using the D-5 and T-5 parameter boxes selected.

You might need to run multiple queries, by state only.(Distance limitations)

Yea that's not really what I'm looking for , I want to know the ones no matter the rating that no one can find .

That being the case.... if you look closely at the PQ submission page, there is also a parameter checkbox for "Have not been found".

Wow you guys are really missing the point , I guess the computer age has really taken all personal experience out of life . Thanks for your time.

What is the point then?

The thread title and the OP seemed to be quite clear. People responded helpfully.

It's difficult to provide any help if YOU aren't clear about your question.

    B.

No, I got what they were trying to say.... They didn't want to have to do the work themselves.

  12. I know this probably isn't the proper thread to post this in, but I'm not sure where to post it.

This has to do with viewing the forums on a Windowsphone (not app). I used to be able to click on a thread and it would automatically take me to the last unread post. It no longer does that for me, it goes to the first post everytime. Is there a setting that would allow me to reset it? Or is it a possible bug? Thank you.

  13. thanks for your support. Problem is solved here, but I am not sure about the trick.

IE9 was not running in compatibility mode, but after opening the Developer toolbar (F12) I noticed that the Document Mode switched to 'IE7 standards' when visiting a geocaching.com site. I toggled the document mode and compatibility mode a couple of times, cleared the cache, cookies and form data and suddenly it worked! Compatibility mode is off and document mode is 'IE9 standards'.

Now trying to explain what I did to some other people with the same problem...

Your solution helped me. Thank you Beukenootje.

  14. I have archived several caches under the 'not a good idea' category. No warning to the CO either, but still open for discussion should the desire.

There are situations not foreseeable in the guidelines. Many times legal, no permissionissues, just not a good idea...

    examples:

At the entrance to a homeless camp. Many tiomes these are OK, this open was muggled weekely.

Truck driver pull over... in the middle of a constant supply of fresh urine and fecies.

Post on city street just outside angry business owner - he would yell at geocachers.

Geocaching is a light and fun activity. These types experiences are not light and fun (except maybe for the CO), so they do not fall in the realm of geocaching.

I once contacted a reviewer about a cache being in an area where the homeless stayed and there were hypodermic needles everywhere. Most cachers that found the cache would comment on the hypodermic needles and garbage. The reviewer answered me back saying that he understood my concern but reviewers are not expected to "judge" caches or locations. Reviewers are only responsible to assure it meets the guidelines. I didn't know what to say after that.

  15. There would be no "Wow factor" to define, if TPTB didn't put the "Wow factor" in place in the first place. Why was there a Wow factor? Too many lame ones were being submitted? A quarter million or so, and growing daily, parking lot micros on private property without permission tells me they couldn't give a hoot about "lame ones being submitted". :P
