P.S: Be aware that American Geocachers in general tend to be rather indifferent or negative to this topic as they can geocache on a full continent without any language boundaries. Geocachers in Europe, or internationally travelling cachers (this of course including beforementioned American geocachers) on the other hand tend to understand the issue. I.e. touring Europe on a geocaching venture will quickly confront you with 30 languages or more.

I am actually very supportive of the idea brought forward in this thread. Be it an attribute or other unique identifier, it would be great to have such pointer. Having said that it needs to be very clear what the rules are for such "pointer". What language? Listing only? Hint only? Both? etc etc. An other initiative and experience, read below In view of the MEGA-Event 2011 in Switzerland I took the initiative to create a bookmark with Swiss Geocaches including an english listing and hint. It comprises closely to 10% of all active Caches. As this was a private initiative the effort was considerable. And it isn't done at any date, as new geocaches get published, amended or archived. End of 2012 I discontinued the maintenance as inspite advertisement of the idea both towards the various owners as well as to forums with potential users there was very little feedback. Who ever feels like taking a look, please follow the links: Swiss Caches with English Listing (VOL 1) Swiss Caches with English Listing (VOL 2) And here one of the marketing ideas for owners to integrate into their profile:

Hope this announcement contributes somewhat to the interests of this discussion group. Many Swiss Geocachers have contributed to a Bookmark list summarizing Swiss Geocache Listings with an English Translation. For all that don't understand (Swiss-)German, French or Italian, we so want to contribute to a more interesting experience while visiting Switzerland on Caching matters... Many of the listings have truly interesting stories to be told on the site you are visiting, or you can finally also start to takle Multi- and Mysery-Caches abroad. Currently close to 7000 Listings have been screened for compliance with the Bookmark requirements and the collection currently consists of close to 800 listings with more to come. So enjoy your visit in Switzerland. By the way: There is a Mega-Event comming up very soon!

I am seeking for some technical assistance. My goal is to a) load as many caches to my Garmin Nuvi 1680 have my GPS alert me when I get near of any cache, just like a police trap notice. (Not just have the Cache on the screen) I tried the procedure setout in http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com/ but it doesn't seem to work. Especially my specific device is not listed which might be the reason. Anyone have some useful experience to share? Thanks, Riepichiep

Perhaps the pressure isn't sufficient. And that comes perhaps from the fact, that: 1) Groundspeak is in the US and might "suffer" from the typical US/English-mens symptoms: I get along all over the world with my native language. 2) A good number of the people really needing this kind of functionality are not participating in this form as they don't understand english...? Anyone out there able to link up earlier discussion threads?

I like that idea of making the reading of multi-language cache descriptions easy and at the same time encouraging to have it accessable to as many visitors as possible. How about an idea I have found with some Auction-Websites: By clicking a "add-button" you can add an additional description-text field accompagnied by a pulldown to assign the language. What effect would that have: 1) We would have the language attributes selected as proposed in this feed 2) The descriptions are shorter and not overloaded by the multiple languages. This comes in hand if you are caching by paper. But also with the iPhone app it would come in hand to have shorter descriptions. Exactly the readability of the listing has held me from posting my caches in a second (english) language.

Well I guess I can imagine why this topic doesn't really apply to you, as you have practically exclusively cached within the US and thus are fine with english. In the case of many other cachers in other countries travelling around as you do means crossing borders and changing languages. As you might know: In Switzerland we have alone already 4 languages. Moste european countries have their own language. The point is: There actually are several listings around that will be in the local language and i.e. english. That will often be the case in touristic regions or for caches that were placed by tourists. Therefore if that be a Multi, then it could actually be worth looking at that listing. Or I simply will be able to understand the touristic explainations to the location.

(1) I hate the funny feeling of solving a puzzle and just running off perhaps many many miles to log the cache. Both for time but also nature preservation I like to have certainty that my brain did it's job. (2) Geochecker does the job well, provided the owner knows how to set it up and add the link to the listing (3) At the end of the day it is probably up to the owner, if he accepts mails and contacts requesting confirmation or if he chooses for some kind of automation In conclusion. (i) I vote for supporting this feature within Geocaching.com (ii) Setting it up shall be a (yes) (no) option in the listing, with mandatory selection, but no predefined selection.

======== ENGLISH ======== Geocaching is international. And as many of us probably have already cached outside the own country and outside the own language region we encountered that understanding the listing is difficult. This - to my experience - will strongly apply to any cache type other than Traditionals. I propose to discussion in this forum the following: Adding the option for owners to register the language(s) of the listing, similar to the already featured attributes. Adding search / filtering functionality to search caches to understood languages Adding in the personal profile the prefered languages The development team is already contacted about this topic and will be following this thread.
