  1. It's no problem but thanks for offering. I did have a new mission for the minis planned and may yet use the copy tag for that. Meanwhile the other mini has turned up in an event cache So that brings down the attrition rate a bit
  2. Is this supposed to make me feel better
  3. Well that could be good news I'm still hoping Island Hopper might show up as there's no evidence that the cache was raided, but I think you're right with the other one, off to the graveyard to join poor old buggy bear
  4. I have jsut realised that out of 5 TBs in the wild, only one is currently accountable for : One went awol from it's first placement Two others are not in the caches they are supposed to be And one was in a recently muggled cache Is an 80% attrition rate common - or am I just naturally unlucky? (at least my coins all seem safe at the moment - although one or two people are hanging on to them a bit long)
  5. A cheap option would be cachemate. There is also a navigation plug in for it. So you can download caches to it from GSAK or easyGPS or manually then have access to all the info plus the hint and use the navigation plug in to get to the cache. There are others, but at about 8 quid CM is a good start.
  6. I have found that if you set the compass to work at speeds below 3mph only whilst walking to a cache the pointer is working from GPS and then as you slow down, the magnetic compass takes over. I usually do a calibration once I get away from the car and don't have too many problems, although once it got stuck 180 degrees out.
  7. Probably not dead but paralised. The nasty critters lay their eggs in the host and the lavae eat their way out of the still alive spider A keeper of tarantulas I used to know rescued a spider that had been caught by a wasp like this and after about 3 weeks it woke up and was OK.
  8. I have often returned to a previously found cache to drop off a TB (for example took one up to Sussex for the weekend and didn't have time to get out and do a new find, but was able to drop off the TB in keeping with its mission). I have also returned to caches to 'log' a TB or coin if not to move it. After asking a similar question here before I try to discover all of the TBs and coins that pass through my caches. I guess this is moving away from the pure theme of geocaching, but is all about the TB / coin game.......
  9. With some of the recent outbreaks of 'unease' on the forum I wondered how people would see themselves in this list of forum types. OK it's OT but relevent to what I have witnessed recently...... (and it's my 100th post!)
  10. I usually research a cache in advance and know what to expect in it, but even if I find a bug or a coin and take it uncertain of its mission I do my best to play along and keep it on track or theme. I don't think a lot do, you only have to see some bug pages where they ask for photos and so on only to see no photos in the last 10 or so logs. Most of my recently release coins have a goal sheet with them even if it's only to keep it moving or within the UK or whatever......
  11. That is a really neat idea! I recently dropped off a couple of coins in local caches to start them on their way and attract visitors to the caches - they were both gone within hours! One has moved a bit (although not on mission) the other appears to have been passed to someone else and has not been placed. Another coin that was in one of the caches was also removed pdq and as far as I can tell is now completely off mission. I still like to believe in the fun of the game and have put a few coins out into the wild - none have disapeared (yet) but few people seem to bother with missions or even moving them on in a reasonable time.
  12. Making me envious - I lent mine to my boss to try out geocaching whilst on hols with his son. I'm seriously suffering withdrawal right now and won't get it back for another 11 days. Add to that the fact that the CF GPS in my PDA has just gone toes up, I'm blind as well
  13. There are some nice free stencil fonts around on the 'net such as here which will do the job nicely. These can be cut out with a sharp knife (see previous saftey note ) in the safe knowledge that they will still 'look right' afterwards. I once had to mark out a car park and used one of these to produce one letter per page (tip don't use full black fill if it's your printer ink!) then taped them all to a batten.
  14. I like the idea of being able to discover a TB or a coin (especially a coin where folk like to collect the icon) - and sometimes the pleasure is in the finding and seeing rather than grabbin and moving on at some point. Sometimes I think it is better to leave it if you can't help it on it's mission, something I think more people should do! So this gives the option of 'logging' your find in one hit withouth being tempted to move it in the wrong direction or keep hold of it for too long. From the title of this thread, I thought the proposal was for a specific graveyard cache for coins similar to GCD653 but I suppose as it's technically a virtual this is not possible....?
  15. Mmm bit cynical considering the latest news. I have wondered about this; I have come across a fair few ammo cans where the notices on the outside were all but worn off - you have to ponder what plod might do searching a wood for potential munitions and finding that. I've also come across a cache within 200m of an army range red flag near to a sign saying don't touch suspicious objects (at least it stopped it getting muggled!). Otherwise it's a fair comment and I'm sure the powers that be are aware of geocaching - but I would still be wary about lurking around certain areas at the moment......
  16. Well, one way not to do it is to take a class of kids on an outward boundy type of thing in a remote part of the UK and get them to set a cache as a class project. The one I found like this has had only 5 finds since June 2004. Those kids must have grown up had kids, got divorced, taken up umpteen other hobbies since that holiday Having spent time as a Cub Scout leader, it is very dificult to get yoof involved in anything it doesn't find for itself, so perhaps trying to keep it from them would be a start....... (like fags and booze - works a treat!)
  17. Why bother? The detail on the basemaps is worse than useless. a. (and just a tip. This forum is for quizzes and word games. Please don't clutter it with posts about geocaching.) For example, the US basemap shows my Egyptian hotel as 2 miles out to sea, whereas the Euro one shows the road past it and the airport in the right place. Example 2, I'm off to Corfu again in a couple of weeks and my old GPS had the airport and the main roads on it plus the Greek / Albainian border was in the right place and the big cities named - non of this appears on my US centric basemap. (and Metroguide only manages Athens) Neither of these are big deals, and I certainly don't regret the £100 odd quid I saved getting a US basemap, but it would be nice to have. Just wondered if anyone else had tried it. Ah. word games Funnily enough I have been trying to get a concise definintion of sublimation (in terms of chemical state changes) today without much luck, so today's word is s-u-b-l-i-m-a-t-i-o-n
  18. I came across this thread this morning in the hardware forum. The first link takes you to the details, and the next one takes you to the file. Snip text --- 1. Create a new subdirectory "basemap" below your MapSource installation. Normally is this c:\garmin. Thus create c:\garmin\basemap. 2. Unzip the ZIP file to this new created subdirectory c:\garmin\basemap. 3. Edit the paths in "atlantic.reg" accordingly to your MapSource installation. 4. Add the contents of "atlantic.reg" to your registry (double click). Attention: The paths in the reg file must be edited accordingly to on your MapSource installation. If you do not, there will an registry error when starting MapSource. Now you have in MapSource a new map entry "basemap" for the Basemap. You can transfer this now together with other map tiles (also possible to add tiles from different maps, for example topos, city-select, city-navigator, metroguide, ...) to your GPS unit. We are not responsible for any damage / data loss and we provide no Support. -- End snip Well, I've downloaded the file and it looks a lot like the way the free topo files are implemented. unfortunately my GPSr is out on load at the moment, but this sounds interesting. Comments?
  19. Have you actually used this? What models does it support? Mad popups! but firefox killed 'em
  20. Well, a cheaper solution to $200 for repairing the 'maybe' suspect ipaq sd slot would be this on ebay, a nice new sirf3 CF gps with a built in SD slot! how neat is that
  21. I don't know if this helps or is strictly correct. I used to use the pocketgps camera poi files for my pda based tom tom, but then stopped when they started charging. However, I have a program called poiedit installed which is donate ware, and it has just autoupdated all of my pocketgps files without hitting the subscription screen. However my TT is currently off the road - the compact flash gps unit died yesterday
  22. Well, whatever you do don't go down the route of a certain other forum I have to admit perusing, where the sig has to be larger than any post you make I can just see it here:- -- In da gc bag Garmin xyz Sandisk blah blah blah Spare duracells etc driving da skoda Proud member of da Surrey GC posse (sorry Surrey picked at random) - any big graphic you can find -
  23. Sorry to revive such an old thread, but I was clearing out my ebay watchlist and took another look at this - great feedback Here Even the guy who said not original, but OK soon changed his mind. Oo er
  24. It does sound like the GPX file is corrupt in some way. The fact that it is failing on line one is pretty worrying. Where did the file come from? I have always done an export from GSAK using the gps / loc function then just copying that to the SD card and importing into Cachemate. I would try with another gpx file (with just a few records) and see how that goes. If you still get the errors, perhaps a post to the smittyware support forum..... http://www.smittyware.com/forums/
  25. I also use an Ipaq, but the only gotcha I'm aware of with Cachemate is making sure you have selected the right database. Otherwise the import runs but you see no entries. So from the man screen List / Select DB. Hit new to create one, then close that window. On the main screen tap the import icon on the bottom of the screen (looks like an arrow pointing at papers). The GPX plugin should be selected, then select your db from the next drop down - other options are optional you mileage will vary. Tap start in bottom left of screen. And that should be that
