  1. I'm amazed at how quickly it all goes up and down. I drove down the Mall (in fact by coincidence nearly the whole bit from tower bridge to the finish) on Friday Lunchtime and the finish gate, barriers etc weren't anywhere to be seen. Along the embankment the barriers were up though. Back on topic, I've registered to do a half marathon in Torbay this summer, but don't think I could contemplate double that
  2. Gotta keep this thread up to date - I found out today that I have to go to Jersey next week for a business trip I've convinced my boss that even though it's a bit more expensive than flying, taking the car is the best bet which means I'll have a chance to crack some of the many new caches in Jersey since my last visit - and I get to see how the new in car nav system performs
  3. And two of the Guernsey caches are actually on Sark and of the 7 2 are unavailable including one of the sark ones Anyway had a nice weekend there just before easter and bagged the caches that weren't there last time and left some coins and a TB there to start travelling. On the GPS mapping subject, tom tom is still useless, so at times my 60 csx became lap nav! And to top it off, the day after getting back I took delivery of my new car whose built in sat nav has full maps for the island too (uselss for caching though because it won't do poi's). Even if the caches are a bit thin on the ground I can't recommend a trip to Guernsey (or Jersey) enough, we had a great weekend.
  4. Well, I take it all back! I was only going by the log left on the cache page and the note on the coin page, by a subsequent cacher. It seems all is well With this one at least. Note to self: allow a couple of days before jumping to conclusions.
  5. Fully appreciate that, but as someone who doesn't 'get out much' to play the game part of the pleasure is travelling vicariously through these critters and judging by the previous log comments, going to the expense of getting a nie coin and just releasing it for the pleasure of others is a welcome act. I've only lost one traveller so far to a genuine muggling, but to be an active geocacher (by this I mean monitoroing caches) then hittting a cache just to nick the coins therein is just plain wrong. I had another coin vanish just recently and someone contacted me to say they feared for it and checked the cache to find the same thing - no logged visit, just the absence of the coin. Just look at what a fine collection of coins one could amass just buying them on ebay, if they hadn't gone to the expense of buying a GPSr to find and then steal them.
  6. Funny how some people interpret sharing a coin for all to discover as an invitation to nab it for good and not logging in the cache or online This has just made my day
  7. I've only ever found 28 TB's so I suppose attending that meet could up my count, BUT how long has it taken to collect all those and then to plan to hold them for 4 or more months is just plain wrong. These are supposed to be TRAVEL bugs, keep 'em moving or don't take 'em!
  8. This was discussed in some depth over in the uk forum, here until the mods decided it had naviagated out of GC.com territorial waters
  9. I'm collecting a new car in the UK next week with integrated GPS. When I test drove it, I didn't like it much (being so used to my PDA based Tom Tom), the worst thing being the robotic and unchangeable voice. Other than that it chose the same routes, and could do full postcode searches. A possible downside is that it has an extra CD slot in the dash for the map data and I dread to think how much updates will cost. Also, I have no idea how to go about adding POI's etc. The BIG PLUS and the reason I specified it for my car is the huge colour display, which can be used as a rolling map even when not navigating, combine that with a built in TMS reciever and it looks pretty neat. Of course all of the other dashboard stuff is displayed on this panel, had I not opted for the sat nav, I would have got the default twenty shades of oragne. Since ordering the car I have also bought a TT510 which will be used in it not least as it is my hands free phone now as well as navigator of choice and that is quite important here.
  10. It's at times like this that we need a sort of Ben Elton for the noughties: "So, they weren't trespassing illegally in Iranian waters; they clearly in Iraqi waters - a perfectly legitimate place for the British military"
  11. And with practice can be done with one hand
  12. My old Etrex would actually ask if I'd moved more than 500 miles if it was having trouble getting a fix. Don't know exactly what that helped it with, but it used to take about 5 mins, when switched on in a holiday destination. My Forerunner had a fit when I drove it to Scotland and had me standing around waiting to start my run for about 10 mins Never seems to be a problem for the GPS60.... The best is Tom Tom, you can actually download quick fix data via your mobile and even if you haven't turned it on for a week it still gets a rapid fix.
  13. Who is watching your cache or TBs? Just wondering, as it might point me at an as yet un-known of local.....
  14. People holding on to TBs or coins is one thing and sort of understandable, even the odd ones were they 'forget' to log a TB as picked up and so it appears to be missing until it turns up unlogged in another cache. What concerns me is that some people don't seem to think about where they are dropping TBs and coins. I recently had an email saying that one of my coins has gone awol from a cache in an area that had suffered a spate of such thefts. When researching a caching trip is should be easy to spot if a cache has been regularly muggled or there seems to be a local coin collector operating and make decisions on where to drop trackables accordingly.
  15. If you're nervous about installing stuff on your shiney new OS, try Altiris Software Virtualisation here, free for personal use. You just 'capture' the install process into a virtual layer which can then be switched on or off on demand. It's great for stuff that insists on puting loads of things into your startup sequence or pollutes the system tray; and er, it's also good for hiding non corporate applications (like skype) when connected to the work network - but I never said that.
  16. I still haven't migrated to version 2 because I can't wean myself off the superb "Session Saver" (don't tell me about the built in one in v2, it just doesn't cut it). I have one window with all my GC pages and forms that I follow all saved as one session.
  17. I used an Etrex Vista for ages. It was an old model with a serial lead, but was simplicity itself. Get hold of a copy of something like Easy GPS, load your waypoints into that and it supports sending straight to garmin. If you have a usb cable, you may need the garmin usb driver from their website, otherwise pretty much the same......
  18. I'm aware of that. I saw the export option on the menu but........(see below) And there lies my problem. My "trial" disk no longer works and I managed to delete Pocket Streets from the PDA. Very retrograde step IMO. They seem to market AR as an option for US visitors to Europe and pay no heed to the fact that European users won't have the US version I think you can still download Pocket Streets from the MS web site, bit if you have any problems, PM me and I will sort you out.
  19. I think the 60CSX problem was less to do with the capacity of the card (they just said they only 'supported' up to 512 but admitted larger would work), but to do with the physical electronics implementation which meant that if you used certain high speed cards (ultra 2's I think) the write process of the CSX would kill the card! Standard micro SD's have been used by many on the hardware forum up to 2GB - I have been using a 1GB for ages.
  20. Did you assume blanket NT permission? I understood that you should seek permission even from the NT locally and ran into a similar problem, the local warden allowed me to place two caches and when I asked about setting a third he told me that he had been told by his boss not to permit anymore - in fact his boss is agin them altogether. Personally, I would say if you set these wthout explicit permsion and there are further local restrictions in force which could mean you jepardising other existing caches they would be better archived......
  21. Still got one in the garage, but could only get it together when I had a kite to hold me up!
  22. Surely it's a right handed thing - bad enough standing up to your knees in who knows what trying to balance all the bits and pieces you're holding and filling in a log, but if you flip to the other page either you've nowhere to hold it or the spine gets in the way of your writing hand. Perhaps ther should be a rule that southpaws have to visit caches alternately to 'normal' peeps
  23. I'm glad you pointed out what NE1 meant. I hate acronyms sometimes, they are a lazy way of typing, and you need to know what they mean to understand them!! Is NE1 an acronym? Oh Dear! Pointless pedantic debate coming up. It isn't exactly but is near enough for my liking. I don't even know if there is a word for the mobile text style of wording. If there is I bet it's an Acronym!! Well, Well, oh dear! As someone who tries to type in fora in as plain an Englishy kind of way, observing puctuation, capitalisation, and even some of the rules of grammar, my one slip into shorthand gets short shrift. Please accept my humblest 'pologeeees
  24. Well, I installed it this morning. A completely clean install (on this PC), configured, registered then imported a full backup from the old version with no problems at all (well, it took a couple of goes to register). Not really played with it, but everything seems to be there so if nothing else I get a nice warm feeling for supporting a hard working shareware author
  25. Just paid for it but not got around to downloading and installing. For reasons I won't bore you with an upgrade isn't an option for me so I intend to do a clean install and then import my (previously saved) database. Clyde assures me this will work, so now worries there, I just wondered what other peeps though of the new version......
