    Gilsson Antennas

Thanks for the heads-up! I just purchased mine after re-considering the benefits. Just in time too
  2. I hope criminal charges are laid. When you register a firearm in Canada, it is standard for the police to fire few rounds and collect the expended ammo for evidence? (Ie. bore catalogue of firearms). If so, I sincerely hope they nail this ****er to the wall.
  3. I post DNF logs and personally find it bad form not to.
  4. This is very interesting! Every once in awhile I check the Kp indexes and noticed that for almost a week now the results have been <=1 which I thought was odd. The future looks bright! Interestingly enough, during the largest solar flare of the summer I was out geocaching and saw first-hand the detrimental effects of solar radiation. We were being bounced around by 100s of meters so we called it quits during the maximum of the storm. We only found out AFTER we tried caching that day that there was appreciable solar activity. Now I check the Kp values prior to every outing to get an appreciation of how much error will be induced by radiation.
  5. I agree - it is best NOT to bring this issue up! They will only ban activites which are brought forward - they will simply ignore ones which are "uncommon". A wise man once said that it is easier to beg forgiveness than to ask for permission.
  6. Man .. that's a bummer. Perhaps the cache owner is lonesome and just wants some form of interaction 8).
  7. Ive read your entire statement. I don't like you calling good cachers "Bean counters" or belittling their finds by saying they are mainly 1/1s. For someone that has been in this sport for such a short time you are being awfully judgemental. El Diablo How myopic of you. I can't help but feel you post to argue at this point and I will not play your game.
  8. That is fine. Re-read my last statement.
  9. On a medical note: If you or someone you know is suffering from "ascending paralysis" then you likely have a tick. This is an often mis-diagnosed symptom. On a related note: Up here we have the West-Nile Virus to deal with as opposed to ticks. Horray.
  10. Why can't people seem to accept that different people will play the same game differently? Why do all the bean-counters here seem to take offense to someone asking for the solution to a cache? Are you afraid that these people will exceed your "amazing" 'find count' (consisting mostly of 1/1s I might add)? This is an individual game where the only competition should be yourself. If you are unable to solve a puzzle and cache simply for the finds and not the trek then who cares!? I personally cache for the challenge. If you look at my stats, I tend to tackle all of the most difficult caches by day and the rest by night (to artificially increase the difficulty). We all play the game differently.
  11. Just a technical note: When you replicate the experiment - as noted, you should cover the entire GPSr and likewise for the antenna. In addition to this, you should consider grounding the metal cover to provide a Faraday shield.
  12. I thought GPS receivers were illegal in Cuba?
  13. This is silly. When someone posts a bearing, it is assumed to be true north (accounting for magnetic variation [declination]). When you need to make a projection on your GPSr for a cache, you should ensure you are using the proper reference (ie. true north vs magnetic). This is a VERY important topic in geocaching as using the wrong reference can throw you off by an increasingly large value as distance to the projection increases. That said, anybody who does not understand magnetic variation should take the time to familiarize themselves with it - it could save your life one day!
  14. This is mostly due to the over-zealous S.Q. targeting ON plates Back on topic: I agree - The army surplus on St. Jo in Hull is a GREAT resource. If you ever make any stops down in the states, I would also recommend waiting until you make a trip there to pick up a few ammo boxes. You can make great caches from other things than ammo boxes though!
  15. Say what you want about highly non-sophisticated comparisons between two units but the physics speak volumes. The antenna design of the patch antenna is significantly worse than the quad-helix. There really no point in arguing this topic. At the accuracy (or lack thereof) that GPSr units exhibit, two units will perform equally (poor) under the same conditions. Many however notice that their units w/ quad-helix out-perform their patch-type units (as one would expect) under the same conditions - but remember that we are talking accuracy of +-3m (at best) which is well beyond the margin for result significance at this point.
  16. My vote so far is my new 60CS. I had an eTrex Venture which had very poor receiption in comparison to the 60CS [as noted due to the patch antenna of the eTrex as opposed to the higher-gain quad-helix antenna of the 60CS] The extra sensors of the "S" series make it really easy to locate a cache - but sometimes this takes the fun out of the caches

    Ottawa Event

Ok folks - today at 6:00pm the fun begins!! Nobody jump the gun - or else Seriously though .. this post is only really designed to bump this thread because of todays event.
  18. I'm a new 60CS owner but I have read the manual cover-to-cover twice. A few possibilities come to mind with this issue: The first issue would be your "method of transport" slection in the routing setup. The next most likely issue is the "calculation time" selection - I would select "best route" (or whatever calculates the best possible route at the expense of calculation time). Hope this helps you out ...
  19. I would personally LOVE to see a 5/5 in my area! I think I may be the one to do just such a cache I enjoy tackling 5* diff. caches in my area (esp. Binthair's) because they provide a personal challenge. When I am with others, I am always being dragged into the <2.5 game.

    Wifi Spots

Wrong. In Canada, it is perfectly legal to "intercept" any radio waves which require an antenna (all). The stipulation is that the data collected may NOT be used for personal gain. http://www.legal-rights.org/rulings/dbranton.html On a related note: Connecting (even by accident) to someones WiFi gateway without their expressed permission is an offence. A precident was set back in 2002 in Toronto which makes it equivalent to wire-taping - loads of jail time for that. Don't bother! As a former "stumbler" I can verify that there were well over 700+ WiFi spots in Ottawa (all mapped and catalogued by yours truly). The number is likely larger now. In terms of open access to cachers: Legality issues may prevent this. Any activities by the (remote) user are logged under your connection and as such you are liable for their activities (think unlawful use). The only way this would be viable is if you are an IT nerd with lots of Linux experience - you could set up a VERY tight firewall with a SQUID tunnel that only allows gc.com queries. I think I just might tackle this one
  21. Crap! I fall under four of those as a S.C.U.B.A. certified ex-combat engineer (military: explosives + boobytraps) who owns a GPSr

    Cache Approval Times

Ah, see .. this kind of post is actually helpful!! Thanks thisismeisthatu! This is a great tip for everyone! Maybe it's just me but this seemed like a fairly obvious point since all the approvers are volunteers and have lives outside of gc.com . Thorin Do you have the reputation as a troll in real life too?
