  2. In spite of fact the Rino 120 does not have an electronic compass or as much memory as my Vista, it is my preferred GPS for geocaching! In non scientific field comparisons geocaching under tree cover (I with my Vista & both my daughters with Rino 120s) the Vista was bouncing all over the place while the Rinos held a lock.
  3. I guess it's not fair to say I run into my kids all the time since I have two Rino 120s. The only time I've run into other other Rino owners is at the GA geocache monthly meetings. There can be a half dozen or so at a time there.
  4. They have some serious trade offs for their low price and shirt pocket size. (about the size of a good compass) No way to update software or download waypoints. No way to power externally. Limited or no ability to save tracks.
  5. quote:Originally posted by Cache Canucks:...At best, the altitude given is an approximation and would hardly be something on which you would want to base a night landing of an aircraft in heavy fog ["...200 feet, 175, 150, 100, <THUMP!>"]. ... Well put.
  6. We'll need more info to help. I had some problems linking my Rino 120 with an early version of EasyGPS. Solved it by updating EasyGPS. I currently have Garmin stumped with my link problems. Up to a month ago linking with Mapsource was no problem. Lately I'm having some problems uploading there with both of my Rino 120s. (Note: I have no problems linking to Mapsource with my Vista. I also had no problem downloading the latest software to the Rinos.)
  7. quote:Originally posted by EraSeek:_Joe's site says it is size, not type_ Joe MeHaffey and Jack Yeazel say: "Some people suggest that the Quad Helix antenna is "best" consumer GPS antenna under tree cover. This is not categorically true. ... All I know is that both my Rinos held a lock while my Vista was bouncing all over the place the last time I compared the them under tree cover.
  8. Maybe you've been geocaching too much. If that were possible.
  9. Well now I need to decide if I leave on my car dash, put it on ebay, or shell out the $125.
  10. If so and you have the latest software version 3.20, have you had any problems loading WAAS information from satellite #35? I want to rule out software before I pack up mine and ship it to Garmin with the $125 repair check. Thanks!
  11. Mapsource? EasyGPS? Other? I just had some problems uploading to Mapsource. It gave me an error message to send to Garmin.
  12. How about posting a picture of the lucky guy? Maybe a family shot geocaching.
  13. Problems remains. Let it sit for 4+ hours. What could be keeping my Vista from seeing sat #35 and loading WAAS data? I'm not crazy about paying Garmin $125 to look at it. It may just stay on the dash or end up on Ebay.
  14. I'm glad my Honda doesn't have any crap on/in the window to block my signal.
  15. Great artical on GPS at HowStuffWorks
  16. quote:Originally posted by OuttaHand:I have the Rino 120 -- yes it does have an odd-shaped back. As the last reply said, it's because it has three AA batteries back there. I don't have any trouble holding it at all. I think the shape fits rather nicely in the had. The 'bulge' sort of cups right into your palm. I love mine! Ditto the above! Shape is well designed!
  17. quote:Originally posted by ScottJ:110 has no GMRS channels Originally Garmin specs said the 110 didn't support GMRS but I've heard they're including now. BTW... Don't you have a 110? quote:Originally posted by ScottJ:110 does not come with data cable Very good point! The 120 includes a cable. After buying the cable for the 110, the prices are a lot closer.
  18. Wow! I racked up with my dividend this year. ($87.33) I guess I'll just have to find something else to buy. If I spend it by the end of the month, I get 10% off on an item. I guess I'll go by Mon.
  19. ...I lost the disk before I installed it. I had to use the permanent one. Fortunately I haven't needed to remove it. It's good to know the temporary adhesive works so well.
  20. I'm happy with them. Of course there is no other option for downloading maps. I've used them with my Vista, Rinos, & my daughter's Legend. I do wish they had regular upgrades or the ability to add / modify the maps, however.
  21. quote:Originally posted by Anders:Is it scanning for WAAS channels as it is supposed to be doing, i.e. looking through sats #33 thru #50, changing every 45 seconds or so? Or does it just sit there listening to the same sat all the time, without success?... It just sits there. As far as I can tell it has no idea that there are any sats above 33. I hope to have time Saturday to try reloading the software. quote:Originally posted by EraSeek:Maybe he's just in Battery Saver mode.... Thanks for the reminder. I believe I checked that also.
  22. quote:Originally posted by Anders:Have you spoken gently to your GPS units? If the Vista is upset, perhaps due to rough language, it will less likely be in such a mood, that it can really receive these tricky WAAS signals. Anders You mean it doesn't help to throw the GD thing at the nearest tree? Seriously though I had it on top of a mountain this week. I rotated the Vista 90 degrees every half hour or so with no luck. I know the signal is there to be received because I checked it with my Rino first. Garmin has suggested I download the software again before sending it to them with a $125 check. I'm hoping that will solve the problem as I have hard time believing it is a hardware problem when it stopped working after the software upgrade. I'll also try reloading a previous software version before sending it to Garmin. BTW... What is trick again to get in diagnostic mode? I'd like to see if it passes the checksum.
  23. quote:Originally posted by charlesw:...Can you help me out? I am wondering if I should spend $50 on the [data cable] or if I should just buy a new unit.. and get the data cable with that. (Aren't the data cables for new units cheaper?) Most of the Garmin cables I've seen are around $35. Is the cable you need different from current ones? It would be great is a new unit used the same type cable.
  24. quote:Originally posted by ShaneN4Girls:Has anyone figured out how to import information into a waypoints "notes" box when importing waypoint information? That would be a great place to put the cache name and type. Even greater would be a way to save field notes from the Rino to the computer. All my notes were lost when I updated my software. I no longer use the note field for anything but temporary notes.
