  1. quote:Originally posted by aargnpopo:...I remember hearing that the new Garmin Gecko line of GPS devices are waterproof... or was it that they were just water resistant?... The Geckos meet the 30 min at 1 meter "waterproof" standard. I'm not aware of any GPSr that is suitable for diving. BTW... Can you get a signal under water? Any divers out there tried it with their GPSr in a waterproof bag?
  2. I'm a big fan of Camelbaks. I use to carry a 32 oz bottle and not even drink all of it. Now I almost always down the entire 70 oz. It's so much more convenient.
  3. I've always felt that the owner should have the have the right to see who is watching their caches. I have serious reservations about having the watch list being public, however. It would also be nice to have an option for the cache owner to do a bulk email to everyone on the list.
  4. What makes a travel bug unique for me is not its rarity but its unique theme.
  5. While they weren't there when I posted, they've appeared now.
  6. Finally it worked. The last 2 posts were lost. I could search & find but they never showed up.
  7. For the heck of it, I did a Google search of my Geocaching name. It came up it with some of my caches. Try it! eg. enter "Markwell" If you really want a trip, try entering your phone number as a search.
  8. For the heck of it, I did a Google search of my Geocaching name. It came back with two of my caches. Try yours or if you want to find out how well you're known search your phone number. Also try "Markwell"
  9. quote:Originally posted by popupcop:Here is a free spell check program for Internet Explorer users. I have been using it for a few months and have had really good success with it. I realize this message is not about geo-caching but if you spell as poorly as I, you might be interested in the download. http://www.iespell.com/ [This message was edited by popupcop on January 29, 2003 at 08:21 PM.] I'm not sure who turned me on to this program but it's the best thing that ever happened for my forum posts!!!
  10. quote:Originally posted by cachew nut:...And while a smoker cannot usually be distiguished from a non-smoker by looks alone... Accually I can tell a long term smoker from a non-smoker more than 50% of the time. There is a subtle off color to the skin. Some of my best friends are smokers. One reason they are friends is that respect my right not to inhale their poison.
  11. What really annoys me is the smokers that treat the world as their ash tray and subject me to their 2nd hand smoke. Many years ago, I think at a Sierra club meeting, I watched a smoker take apart his cigarette butt and put the filter in a zip lock bag to pack out. I still have a great deal of respect for him.
  12. quote:Originally posted by SurefireM6:I kept the old software because of the 10 second position reporting. The new 3.10 update now only allows position reporting every 30 seconds. http://www.candlepowerforums.com It's my understanding that you're legally not suppose to send position data more than every 30 secs now. (How would anyone know?) I went ahead and updated for the new polling feature. The polling feature is perhaps one of the coolest features yet! I can locate my kids even if they don't respond!
  13. quote:Originally posted by Alan2:http://img.Groundspeak.com/cache/14514_300.jpg Of course, if you have a GPS with a built in compass, you eliminate one device. That also helps. Good luck. Alan I've been looking for a way to attach my GPS to my hiking stick. Where did you get that adapter?
  14. quote:Originally posted by nincehelser:...Are the snake bite kits you see in camping stores worth carrying around? George I carry one of the high quality suction devices in my first aid kit. (Not the one with the small rubber suction cups and razor blades.) It is not a good idea to cut the area at all. Generally speaking, however, if you're not trapped in the wilderness and can get to a doctor in a reasonable time it's best to leave treatment to the doctor. It far more useful to know what kind of snake bit you than be trying self treatment.
  15. Probably a good deal. Depending on how much the pawn shop knows about GPS units you might be able to bargain. Bring a set of batteries and ask if they will go outside with you to check it out. If you get a sat. lock it's most likely in good shape.
  16. There's some hope for the 201 but both have serious compromises from a "real" GPS. The main feature is size. Being the size of good compass they are both true pocket units.
  17. quote:Originally posted by OddTodd:I've seen that somewhere, but new enough to the forum to not understand. 'Markwell' must be an inside joke? OddTodd It's a long story that revolves around A well known geocacher by the name Markwell. He is well known for his helpful references to previous discussions. The term Markwell has caught on. Marwell (noun) - a reference to a previous topic To Marwell (verb) - The act of providing a reference.
  18. quote:Originally posted by Jolly B Good:...Eventually I plan on putting the handle bar mount on a walking stick so I affix my GPSr to it while I walk. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com I've had that idea also. Let me know if you figure out how to do it. The problem I see with the handle bar mount is that it is designed to to mount the GPS at a 90 degree angle to the bar. Attaching it to my hiking stick at 90 degrees just wouldn't work for me. What would work would be a tripod mount! That way I could just screw it on to the top of my stick.
  19. Don't Panic! They haven't been recalled. The tech bulletin simply states that some units in that serial range have experienced problems. The Rino units have been out less than a year. While I can't speak for Garmin, it would seem obvious that yours would still be under warranty.
  20. quote:Originally posted by Radman Version 2.0: quote:Originally posted by OlyHippy:Wow, this topic is almost as useful as the "hand guns in caches" topic... That'll be the next topic of discussion! We will hear both sides' opinion and either disagree or agree. ... And I'm sure someone out there will argue it was a 5/5 cache and they didn't leave bullets.
  21. What's a "poket knive" anyway? I had an official Boy Scout knife as a kid. My parents knew I had pocket knives. I think I even carried it to school with me. Times have changed, however. I have no problems with a responsible child having a knife but believe it should be with the parent / guardians knowledge. The main problems with knives in caches has been pretty well stated. With the ongoing efforts to get Geocaching into state parks, I believe they should stay on the inappropriate list. Even some of the well hidden caches have been stumbled on by clean up crews. I would hate to read on the news that a crime was committed with a knife that came out of a cache. I will continue to remove ALL knives and inappropriate items from caches I find!
