  1. You got it, start simple. It is a great family activity. You are going to love it. I too just got a PN-40 recently. To start with, don't worry about the Topo software. Just start with the geocaching web site and find several geocaches in your area that interest you. I would start with some easy ones (easier difficulty and probably not micros). It is very easy to send geocaches to your GPS one at a time. Just plug it in and click the "Send to GPS" button. Then go out and find them! Don't get discouraged if you are unable to find some at first. It takes a little while to get used to what to look for. But it gets easier quickly. If you run into problems whether just general things or questions about your gps, come back and ask for help. There is a wealth of knowledge and lots of friendly people who are willing to help. Have Fun!!
  2. Never found anything "naughty" but I found an old rusty fishing lure in a cache once. What kind of an idiot puts rusty hooks in a cahce?? I'm just glad my kids weren't with on that one. The last thing I want is my 1.5 year old with a trebble hook stuck in her hand.
  3. I'm sure they are working on a new version of CR. I used to do tech support for Microsoft Money. We new well in advance when the next version was going to be released, and we typically had it installed on our machines during beta testing. However, until the official release announcement was made, we were not allowed to talk about it. So if someone asked when the next version was coming out, all we could say was "it hasn't been announced yet". Basically what the guy at Delorme told me today. I'm sure the current version probably works 99.9% of the time on Win7. I just happen to be the .1%. Pax, I'm thinking the same thing you are, it's more than likely a driver conflict, or a conflict with one of the 75 or so things that are running in the background. The new computer is a Toshiba Satellite. I'll have to look up the exact model once I get home. Thanks again.
  4. I called Delorme tech support. He was less than helpful. He asked me which version of Windows I'm running, I said Win7. He said Cache Register is not supported with Win 7, only XP and Vista. The only advice he would offer is to try turning off my internet security. The phone call lasted about a minute. I lowered my internet security settings but that didn't help either. So I asked if there was going to be a new version of CR coming out to support Win 7, since virtually everything ships with that. He said "I have not heard of anything yet." Win 7 has been out since July, I would think they should be working on a new version. To be fair, I did check their website, and indeed it only lists Vista and XP for operating system. Anyway, my first two days with my new PN-40 and computer have not been very pleasant. The good news-the weather is warming, the snow is melting, and prime geocaching season will soon be here(I hope. April can still dump snow). At least I can use CR with my other computers. It just sucks that I can't use my new one. Thanks for your help and listening to me vent.
  5. Mr Totem, I was not aware of that feature of Win 7(this version is toally new to me). I never used Vista either. Anyway, I uninstalled Cache Register again and reinstalled as you recommended. Same results. I did some more playing around with my three computers. So I have the old laptop(Win XP), netbook(Win XP), and new laptop(1 day old, Win 7). On the old laptop and the netbook, the GPS will SYNC every time on every USB port. I also removed and reinstalled pocket queries(going back and forth between 2 different ones) several times on both computers without any problems. So on the new computer it will not SYNC up if there are any geocaches on the GPS from one of the other computers. If I remove all the caches, then it will SYNC right up, but I still can't run the pocket query, it just hangs up when it tries sending the geocaches. I have tried all the USB ports and the all do the same thing. When I run Topo 8 and plug the GPS in, it recognizes it right away. I have not tried transferring any data using Topo yet since I don't have any idea how to use it, and I'm frustrated enough as is. So at this point I think I can safely say; 1) The GPS is OK 2) The cable is OK 3) My pocket queries are OK It seems like it's a problem between my new computer and Cache Register. I guess the next step may have to be trying to transfer data using either Topo or maybe GSAK. Thanks to everyone for the ideas. Anyone have any more??
  6. Sorry Briansnat. I noticed that I probably had it in the wrong place after I submitted it. So I installed Cache Register on my old laptop(I have three), and it works just fine. Really frustrating that I can't get this to work on my brand new one(just bought yesterday). A few more things I tried. There were a bunch of Windows updates that I hadn't installed yet. So I updated those and it doesn't help. The SYNCing just seems to be really flaky. Now that I have geocaches loaded properly from my old laptop, I can't get the GPS to SNYC to my new one. It always locks up, but not always at the same place. Sometimes it's during the "Retrieving Configuration" stage, sometimes during the "Fetching Waypoints" stage, sometimes during a "Retrieving Device Off Image" stage. I'm wondering if there is some setting in Windows 7 that's blocking it.??? I also tried uninstalling/reinstalling Cache Register.
  7. Okay, here's what else I've tried. 1) Installed Cache Register on a different computer, my little netbook, took forever. Once that was installed I tried running a new pocket query I made(someone mentioned not to have the name downloaded with the file). So when I ran the query, it got through the step of transferring the caches, but then it hung up on the "Fetching Statistics" step. I eventually gave up. When I look in the GPS, it transferred about 10 caches, but not all 79. The ones it did transfer appear to be okay. 2) I then updated the firmware as recommended. It appears that I now have an older version. The one that came on the unit was 2.6.224602 and had a date of July 2009. I now have 2.6.210726 with a June 09 date. I then tried to hook up to my new computer(not the netbook) and I could not SYNC. It just stalled at the Fetching Statistics step. I figured that maybe the caches the other computer sent were hosed, so I deleted all the caches on the GPS. It then SYNCed fine. I then tried to run the pocket query. Same as before. Gets to the transferring caches stage and just hangs. The progress bar never moves. I pulled the plug after a while and it transferred one cache. I must be cursed. And that little green frog is really starting to annoy me. I have one more computer I'm going to try. I'm really getting frustrated with this.
  8. I just got my PN-40 today! Signed up for the premium membership and bought the Cache Register widget. I played around with making pocket queries and think I have that figured out. I made a pocket querie of the geocaches within a 20 mile radius of where we live, which came out to be 79 caches. I received the pocket query email and extracted the .gpx files. I then tried using the Cache Register software to transfer the query to the PN-40. When I hit the SYNC button, it looks like it's starting the transfer, but nothing happens. It just keeps working and the progress bar never moves. I let it run for almost 30 minutes now and it still hasn't complete. How long does it typically take to complete a trasfer of this size?? I tried a different query as well, and that seems to do the same thing. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a setting I need to change somewhere? Also, why do the pocket query emails contain two files? Both have a .gpx extension. The only difference is one has "wpts" in the file name. Thanks
