  1. Well, there's not an etrex model that exactly matches the mag315. I would say the summit is the closest, but the summit has the barometer/altimeter and digital compass. The 315 has the built in city database..which is neat if you're on the road quite a bit. I have a 320, which is a 315 with nautical navaids in place of the "small" cities category...but honestly I'd rather have the small cities. The legend and the venture both have mapping capability (I'm pretty sure ) so the summit would be the closest in features, but not in price. Also, I think the etrex models do resell a bit better just from what I've seen on ebay. The 315's go for about $115, (150 from a store) and the etrex models go for a little less ($10-20) from the retail price. All in all, unless you really need maps on your gps, the 315 is a great unit. I have no complaints with mine. Hope this helps. -pizzachef
  2. Don't you think a Purple Jeep geocache would be a little redundant? Since there is a yellow jeep cache already? How's about coming up with something new or a new concept using the locationless cache as a base. I've noticed that most of the locationless ones out there are a little boring, but I'm not too big a fan of the whole locationless concept, so don't take my critisim too harshly. It's just one man's opinion. -pizzachef
  3. I'm not trying to downtalk the Garmins, but my Magellan floats. I even tried it...the battery compartment is watertight, so it traps a little air, which I guess provides enough bouyant force even with batteries in it. I don't know the depth/time ratings though -pizzachef

  5. At wally world, you can get a charger for ~$10 and 4 batteries for ~10. (rayovac brand) The super-quick 1 hour charger is $30, so make sure that's what you're getting from those other guys, or else you may be getting ripped off. The regular 10 dollar charger takes about 15 hours to charge a dead battery completely. If you've got the cache..hehe, CASH...go for the 1 hr charger. I'm not aware of any problems with it. If anyone knows of any, here would be a good place to let us know As far as the life, they seem to power my magellan 320 for ~12-14 hours. It goes almost instantly to 2/3 full (the battery meter) but stays there for a long time. Then it seems to drain the rest of the way pretty quickly. So the meter is more or less useless, so carry spares. -pizzachef

  7. I don't have a meridian yet..i'm still with a non-mapping gps, a 320, but will upgrade one day. I was under the impression that even though you have up to 4 different files or maps loaded...that they all worked as one. But there's talk about switching between maps...so you can only use one map at a time? Seems like Magellan should be working on a way to overcome that 32meg limit...so that the maps CAN be seamless. -pizzachef
  8. Well, this won't hepl you much, but I've got a Magellan 320, and there's about 15 different icons I can use. I thought that on Garmins, you could upload new icons...is that wrong? Because I want to be able to do that with my mag. Can you upload icons to a mag320? -pizzachef
  9. PS.. whatever you do decide to do, I like the zip-lock bag idea with the new coords in it. If it's okay, i.e. it won't look like trash. For a little while anyway.
  10. If it's the same cache, just in a new location, then just update the current listing. I think someone already mentioned htis, but if you are getting the same "visiting experience" from boh locations, then yes, just update it. But if ht new location ofers a wholly different experience, then maybe you should create a new listing...why not make a whole new cache and leave the other one? I think that may be the deciding factor...could both caches exist at once and not be redundant? If not, then it's the same cache, just in a different spot, so keep the original listing. Hehe..I think we're thinking about this a little too hard -pizzachef

  12. One male here..I go cacheing with my girlfirend sometimes, when she feels like it, but I've never ran into anyone else caching before. Met a few at geogatherings, but not too many couples. -pizzachef

  14. Well, my favorite place to eay is Liuzza's, it's on Bienville near Jeff Davis. Across the street from Mercy Baptist hospital..well, the hospital may have changed names, but that place has awesome food. If you go, you have to get the fried dill pickles..they're out of this world. But I'll be at the Jazz Fest I think, for most of the day. If you want to do something after cacheing, everyone (who can't make the caching) can meet at the bar in Mike Anderson's (on Bourbon near Canal) have an appetizer and a drink and chat...decide what to do from there. It's a restaurant, so it should be okay for J. CJ. That way if you need to go back to your room after tromping around in our 99% humidity to freshen up, you won't be far from the meeting place. If someone knows of a better place to meet, bring it up. Does anyone want to set a time? Anyone at least interested? -pizzachef

  16. I'm sorry I'm clueless, when's Memorial Day? Come summertime, I'll be up for anything...but before June, I may be busy with this or that. But that sounds like a great idea...I may be a little ahead on the NO area caches, but I'd still like to tag along. Just a side note...someone mentioned a camping trip a while back, and nothing ever came of it. Maybe if you set a time and date...well, you sorta already did ...but if you plan something concrete, then people can plan on it and either attend it if they can, or not. Maybe make it an event cache. -pizzachef

Here here...I'd sure like to get together for a short time, or long if you've got the time, and have a bite to eat or drink. I'll probably be at the Jazz Fest that day, but that evening would be a great time to relax and get to know the guy that's running this cool website. Could we arrange a meeting time and place so that the area cachers could get together and get to know one another and meet the big JI? I think that would be swell...maybe someone could make it a short-notice event cache?? hehe, you're probably wishing you never said you were coming down here.. But seriously, some really good caches were mentioned above, and you DEFINITELY should take the street car ride from Canal to uptown...shoot, take it all the way to the end at Claiborne and come back. It's relaxing. And I, and others I'm sure, would really like to meet you and share some stories about geocaching and how all of our lives are forever changed. Let us know. -pizzachef

  20. I voted B...it's not a big deal to move one or more of the legs, it just requires a little work on your part. Now if the different stages are all linked or related somehow, you may have a tougher time with this. I have a multi and all the legs are located around Railroad-related spots..if I had to move a leg, I'd have to find another Railroad related spot, you catch my meaning? I guess you just have to decide how much you really want to use that first location. -pizzachef
  21. Ads on your cell phone??? Don't they pollute our minds enough? Now they're going to put ads on our phones? And I bet you have to pay more to get the special gps phone...sheesh. And I do have to admit, I think the whole microchip thing under the skin thing...scares me a bit. I'd like to think that I could hide from the government in a cave if I so wished. Doesn't the bible say something about everyone getting a number....anti-christ...second coming... No no..I don't really go in for the end of the world thing. We've all had social security numbers for years and years now. But I don't think I'd be very comfortable with a gps buried in my brain. I like my magellan just like it is -pizzachef

  23. quote:Originally posted by gnbrotz: I agree with this statement. I wish we had a section of the forums specifically for "non-geocaching" questions. This is one of the most helpful groups of people I have come across. Greg N 39°54.705' W 77°33.137' I emailed Jeremy about maybe making an "Everything-Else Board" and he like the idea and said he'd work on getting one set up. I guess he's just been busy, but I think it would be neat to talk about topics other than geocaching. We're all friends, and we've got lots of stuff to talk about. -pizzachef
  24. 5 MILES?!?!?! I've been so far into the woods I really NEEDED my gps to get back out. Some of Buck8Point's caches have you going 15 miles down gravel roads with no end in sight. And surly you know someone with a towchain...and if not, they're cheaper than a towtruck and a good investment. So go ahead and get muddy..that's why God made carwashes. -pizzachef
