  1. I wouldn't waste money on Nikes if you're planning on actually going into the outdoors with them. They're god awful expensive just for that silly little check mark, swoosh thing. Try out www.rei-outlet.com and see what's on clearance in the women's shoes area. Or check in a local outdoor store, there's usually always some kind of sale on shoes nowadays. You don't need serious hking boots, but a pair of those on/off trail shoes/boots would be good...and they're usually waterproof(able). Hehe..I can't say just one word can I? Anyway, I go from wearing just Birks to white shrimp boots depending on what I'm walking through...but you might not have the swamps like we have down here in the bayou state. But mostly I wear hiking shoes. They're like soft boots...or stiffer shoes. -pizzachef

  6. Don't know if anyone in the North Louisiana area reads the forums, but I figured I put up a message just in case. The pictures from the Ruston Railroad Runaround as of May 3, 2002 are posted here. There's only eight pics, and I'll get the log book pages up as soon as I can. -pizzachef
  7. quote:Originally posted by SkyTrek: I just changed my Multi-Cache types to Traditional so any future finds will be counted correctly. I also added a comment to the description that says -- For technical reasons this cache is not listed as a Multi-Cache. You know, I'm sure JI was aware that his new count ONLY counted traditionals, and he's probably got something coming out to compensate for the rest that did't get counted. So you changing cache types might, in the end, mess up someone's total count. I say, just leave everything alone and everything will work out. I personally don't see the big deal..it's a new feature right? If you're not happy with it, chances are there will be improvements to it and radically new features coming along after that! I'm just going to sit back and watch how this web site evolves. -pizzachef
  8. I don't understand...the caches are listed but not available right now it seems. Is that because the cache approvers won't approve them? Why not? Is it because of the National Park thing? I thought vits were allowed there...anyway, I like virtuals that offer a view of a nice area, historical area, etc. I don't think they have to be really hard if you don't want them to be. Maybe you can just modify them a little if you want to keep them as 6 seperate caches. Work with the approvers and see what they're looking for. -pizzachef
  9. HAHAHA..looks like Bucky was pushing buttons in his pocket!! I do that all the time, glad to hear it happens to other people too. It was a fun time...glad we could do it. We'll have to start getting together regularly..like a monthly bar/restaurant run to catch up. Maybe a little closer towards the middle of the state to make it easier for everyone. Just a thought. -pizzachef

  11. quote:PC... actually, that wouldn't be as difficult as you might imagine. The current at the mouth of the river is quite tame. In fact, the section you mention has about the least current of any area on the river. (At least in my experience.) Paddling upstream wouldn't be all that difficult if one stuck to the shoreline. Jamie Well, I never would have thought that. I've only been out in a boat on it once, and it was a motor boat, and we were being pushed around quite a bit by the wind. I figured it ouwld be suicide to get in a little paddle boat. Oh well... As for the Buffalo River, I'd be all for going up there to canoe...we're actually going climbing next week in the same area . But CJ, you gonna chime in and let us know your idea? What are we blindly getting ourselves into? -pizzachef

  13. Sometimes you come across an area that has a magnificent view, or some really interesting hostory, and you really want to share it with other people. Sometimes these places are "delicate" in that you can't just hide a box in a tree...it may be private propoprty that allows people to walk in and experience being there. It may be a wildlife preservation, or an old plantation house, or any number or things where hiding a box wouldn't be appropriate. This is what virtual caches are for...a spot where a geocache SHOULD be, but SHOULDN'T be as well. Virts do not discourage me and shouldn't discourage you because haven't we all said it's the "getting there" that's most of the fun? I'm not saying there aren't lame virtuals out there, but I can't let those keep me from seeking the really magnificient ones. As for locationless caches...eh. I tried them...I don't want to outlaw them, but they're not really for me. -pizzachef
  14. Hehe, JZ, if you're VIRTUALLY working, then what's the problem?..hehe, bad joke. Anyway, I don't have a canoe or kayak, but would love to be a paddling partner. I've got the canoeing merit badge, so I wouldn't slow anyone down!! CJ, where are you thinking about paddling? Just curious, because I know you'd do something crazy like go down the Mississip from BR to the gulf...and back. But you can mark me as interested but unequipped. -pizzachef

  16. The ratings aren't consistent by a long shot. I used clayjar's ratingsystem the first time to get a feel for it, and just wing now, but i try to make it a pretty good prediction of what to expect. I think people should pay a little more attention to the ratings...my suggestion: read the logs and see what people have said. If they said, "nice hike, wore me out" then you know a little what to expect. Anyway, good luck! -pizzachef
  17. Don't feel like you have to take it upon yourself to get the bug to New Zealand. What I would do is put it near a major interstate, or if you are near an airport, leave it in a cache near an airport. You could also post in the local forums..like you just did this time ...that the bug is there and is trying to get wherever. But the point is for the bug to travel around and collect "adventures" on his way to his destination. Mailing the bug may take some of the fun out of the game. Now you may be under different circumstances...does the owner want the bug NOW? If not, just let it ride wherever...it's destiny may have it going to Greece on it's way to NZ, you just never know. -pizzachef

  19. I've been to 2 gatherings. The first was a picnic setting, bring your own lunch deal. It was in a local park..we ate and chatted, then we searched for 6 caches hidden in the park by the guy who organized the meeting. It was fun. The second one, we met at a restaurant (in south louisiana, the food was EXCELLENT) and ate and talked a little while. Then, the guy had hidden 10 micro-caches around the city, and we raced to find them. Most people had come with a small group, so there were 3-4 groups searching. The first group back won a prize..a gift certificate to the restaurant that we ate at. That one was neat because after the micro-dash, we all came back and got to talk about our "adventures" around town. Those are my only two experiences, although I think an overnight camping trip or whatever would be really fun. We've talked about renting cabins for the weekend and someone setting up some caches around the area and making it a whole weekend thing, but that takes more planning. I know in Dallas, they've had a few breakfast get togethers, and they've been pretty successful. I guess it just depends on what you would have the most fun doing. Good luck! -pizzachef
  20. I have a hotmail account that I set up just to use for things like amazon and ebay...well, i ended up not using it that much at all, but it still fills up with spam...i probably got 10 each day. and I wouldn't check it but about once a week, and i'd have hundreds of spams...and some nasty porn spams too, HONESTLY, i dont know how i got on those lists. i just quit using it..i figure one day they'll cloes my account. so your problem may not be with geocaching, but with hotmail and the microsoft beast. -pizzachef
  21. Okay, correction: The etrex Venture does not have mapping capability, but does have a city database. So it is pretty much the equivalent to the 315. I think it runs about $20-30 more than the 315..but it does have WAAS correction that the 315 doesn't and a longer battery life (20 hrs according the the garmin website, and the 315 is about 12-15). Looks like you have your answer. -pizzachef

  23. My first unit was a Pioneer, and it did take quite a while to get a lock on enough sats to start "tracking". I would suggest getting a power cable, and plugging it in and turning it on..just leave it in your car..about 1/2 hour before going caching. Once it's tracking it works pretty well, although it tends to loose the sats with some tree cover. Honestly, I think you should upgrade to either the Blazer12 or the 310. It's pretty much the same gps, but they have a 12 band reciever compared to the Pioneer's 2. (The 310 is an updated Blazer12 that has a data port). Sorry about the bad news, but the Pioneer is just that...one of the first modern gps units. If you're patient, it'll work just fine, but I had mine about a week before I had to upgrade. Hope this helps... -pizzachef

  25. Well, there's not an etrex model that exactly matches the mag315. I would say the summit is the closest, but the summit has the barometer/altimeter and digital compass. The 315 has the built in city database..which is neat if you're on the road quite a bit. I have a 320, which is a 315 with nautical navaids in place of the "small" cities category...but honestly I'd rather have the small cities. The legend and the venture both have mapping capability (I'm pretty sure ) so the summit would be the closest in features, but not in price. Also, I think the etrex models do resell a bit better just from what I've seen on ebay. The 315's go for about $115, (150 from a store) and the etrex models go for a little less ($10-20) from the retail price. All in all, unless you really need maps on your gps, the 315 is a great unit. I have no complaints with mine. Hope this helps. -pizzachef
