  1. On some sub screens from the Dashboard there is a return link top left eg: Dashboard ----> Drafts It would be good if this was replicated on this Cache Owner Screen
  2. For my part I am happy to draw a line on this (non) issue. I apologise for some somewhat careless wording. It was only recently that I noticed the date on my GPSmap 60csx was showing the incorrect date and to my knowledge the only downside is that the tracklogs show the incorrect date. (If you get the DAYNUM and add 1024*7 and convert back that is the actual date). It was simply curiosity that eventually lead me into this forum. I can assure that you my device has a usb connection and something called External Data Auxilliary Power Point (4 pins in a square). The device has been well loved since being a Christmas present in 2009 and has been used to find several thousand geocaches, the only reason for needing it. I have been using it recently in conjunction with an excellent mapping product called Viewranger and by tweaking GSAK managed to get almost the same features the current GPSmaps provide for geocaching. However this browsing has almost convinced me that a GPSmap 64sx with OSM mapping will suit my needs, be more convenient and take some of the load off my phone. I realise I have gone a bit off topic, having appreciated your help I thought you deserved a fuller explanation.
  3. Not quite as easy as it might seem. It needs a serial connection, if I ever had one I certainly haven't now. Why EOW doesn't support usb is a bit odd.
  4. I am sending cache waypoints from GSAK to my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx mostly without issues. Make sure you get your GPS set up in GSAK for this model. Very occasionally it fails to find the connected gps. If I restart the computer and make the send the first thing I do it works. (maximum of 500 geocaches, not sure if that includes children, but its enough for me). The gps date on the receiver is now incorrect due to the satellite week number roll over but it is not a big issue.
  5. Not getting PQ notifications and not getting watchlist either
  6. Hi, I am from Surrey but as the locals have not responded I don't know whether Narberth fits your definition but you can do a whole lot worse than visiting Canaston & Pickle Woods. Don't have a dog but don't recall it being a problem. Regards factotem
  7. I was sitting on a bench with Mrs F having a picnic lunch very close to a cache I had placed, so there could not possibly be a cache nearby could there? Part way through the snack Mrs F said "That looks like a cache", pointing to a soggy lookking camo bag on the next bench. Well eventually we opened it to find it was a cache. It had been washed downstream in the floods last year. Someone must have fished it out and left it to dry. Luckily we were able to return it to its owner.
  8. It did not work for me when I moved to Win7 (64bit), but I did not have MM in C:\Program Files. Fortunately I still had the old 'Follow the arrow' instuctions and I think all I had to change was the paths in memory.txt. I think the Rutson macro might have changed my GSAK header bar and so I did not pursue it further. This may help?
  9. Unless it is in an urban or high muggle area I try first to find the cache without looking at the hint. I try to forget as soon as possible the really naff hints, namely the ones that are not helpful. My ideal hint is one that helps without being too precise. However the type of hint that probably annoys me the most (should I need it) is the one that only makes sense after I have found the cache.
  10. This thread reminded me to adjust the hint on a cache that changed slightly, making the hint obsolete. It was kind of cryptic and balanced and cool (well I thought so), and lately wasn't as helpful anymore. Fixed it.
  11. Thanks everyone for your interesting replies. I have just done a quick scan and for the gps it is just about 50/50, with the sat nav I think there is a small majority for direction up. This does surprise me I would have expected almost unamimous Direction Up. If I am going on a caching trip I would normally input the coordinates and let the sat nav navigate me direction up. For a long trip I might not even turn it on until I near the destination (I don't have real time traffic updates). In my opening post I forgot to mention that in addition to the Gps, Direction Up I also have a PDA with memory map North Up which I use as back up and to read cache pages. I also have different mapping but lets not open that can of worms. Kind regards David
  12. I grew up with paper maps and was content to work with North Up and only very occasionly had the need to work out my position using direction up. However the small screen on my gps convinced me I needed to train myself to use Direction Up as that is, to me, more practical displaying more of the route, especially if moving East/West for example. As satnav works direction up as well I wonder if many people still work North Up? By the same token I wonder how many understand map symbols these days or whether they simply follow the arrow?
  13. Hi Martin, I don't update Mapsource all that frequently but have just updated to the latest 130215 but I don't like it. It has lost some detail at "highest" and the roads are much wider so I have reverted to 130111. Is the Mapsource going to continue to be updated and if so will it be in the February style? Kind regards, David
  14. Herewith the text of the e-mail I received: As a company we sincerely apologise for the misrepresentation of geocaching that has occurred in our lifestyle video: Craghoppers - Software Developer by day, Geo Cacher at heart. It was never our intention to falsely represent any of the activities depicted in the videos. We recognise that with a little more research we would never have been filmed geocaching in this way. We've removed all videos showing the team digging up the geocache and for any future projects any depiction of outdoor hobbies will be scrutinised by the relevant experts prior to filming and publication. We appreciate your passionate response and with the proposed actions above we will make every effort to ensure that this won't happen again. We’re sorry you feel that we’ve let you down and hope that you will continue your custom with us. Kind Regards Jim McNamara Managing Director
  15. I have received an apology from Craghoppers and the advert has been withdrawn. I have asked for permission to publish the full text.
  16. I was sitting in the church gounds having done a Church Micro (There are not any/many in the North West yet) when someone appeared clutching a print out of a cache page. He seemed quite surprised I knew he was a cacher [].
  17. It is unlikely to be a Groundspeak cache from round here as Elmbridge Council in their wisdom (or lack of it) do not allow cache placement. I know because I have tried.
  18. It does seem a shame for good caches to die through neglect. Whilst I would be reluctant to put extra work on our reviewers there is already an automatic (surely) mechanism for notifying nearby cachers of new publications. If there was a similar notification of archives or potential archives then maybe there would be more chance of it surviving or being replaced by a new one if in a particularly appropriate location. (I don't update my found caches very often and would be unlikely to know about an already found cache being archived).
  19. I have not yet submitted a photo, so this request might be a bit cheeky. I am wondering whether the intro page above could include a link back to the previous months topic? It would be an easy way to see the pictures and in particular the last month's winner (which was a worthy one). (OK I am being a bit lazy, I could just trawl back through the topics till I found it). Now have I got any hidden treasure I wonder and if so will it stay hidden?
  20. Thanks Martin, Now that I got used to them I must say I like these new maps on my GPSmap60CSx. They do get a bit blocky but are great when you zoom in. Can I be a bit lazy though and ask if you know where I can find a legend for the maps. I was puzzled to find a solid heavy green appearing on my GPS. Having got home and checked on Mapsource I discover it is a hedge or wall. A pointer in the right direction would be appreciated. Kind regards David
  21. I take a somewhat contrary view in that I tend to put my series comment on the first cache of the series. That is because I always look at the first cache page but not always all of the others before setting out (and have been caught out on occasion because of info on an intermediate cache page I have ignored). Unless it is a particularly new series I will look at "all nearby caches I haven't found" to see what favourites have been gleaned but I don't use this a strong indicator. I try to treat each cache on its own merits and put a few words of my experience at the cache. If the cache owner has taken the trouble to put a cache there I think he deserves more than TFTC or a cut and paste job. Of course its the hides are very samey or poor this does become more difficult []. There has been another thread about series and multis. I don't really associate series with multis more that it is a selection of caches named in such a way as to indicate that is usually likely to provide a circular walk. I don't always remember to collect the bonus bits but like it where when possible the CO has the same clue in more than one cache. Just my thoughts on the matter, I doubt too many will agree.
  22. I think there is still a place for both. The multi-cache has an especially useful function to resolve proximity issues, and for example its use in the very popular Church Micro series with over 2,000 units (not all multis though). I have enjoyed several multi's where the total distance exceeds five miles and some would be in my top group of finds. But then a smiley is not the be all and end all for me. I also very much appreciate the series caches especially if I am on holiday or in an unfamiliar area, and someone has, I hope, taken the trouble to set out an interesting, circular for preference, route for me. If I had to be critical of these atall it would not be because of the genre but when the caches are set too close together for my preference (min .2 mile). I have only once forced myself to deliberately miss some out. Gosh there are plenty of really rubbish caches about, both of these are amongst the better examples in my view.
  23. I think the usual reason is to allow more opportunities for 'FTF'. I do know of some cases where this is stated on the cache page. There is loop near me being put out piecemeal, luckily I was late enough on to it to see this happening so I shall wait until the loop is 'closed' before I attempt it. I know some people just hate it when someone gets a whole string of FTF's. I guess its just one of those things. Regards David
  24. I have stamp so its name then date, but even without the stamp thats what I would put. However if it was small piece of paper I would follow the style of the previous logs. What is the controversy?
  25. As well as locking the bike you could always put the wheel in the other way round. - Simples
