  1. actually, i was thinking about doing that for planting one at a boy scout camp... because every good boy scout knows how important it is to know the morse code nowadays...
  2. well no, because usually it's not the hider's fault... depending on how long the cache has been there, trash may have been put there recently. and after big holidays (like the fourth, for example), even more trash may have been put there. the cache i was looking for sits close to a river, so for all i know, during the flooding in the past, half the trash may have been carried away. not that that makes it any better.
  3. of course everyone knows how much fun it is looking for caches in among broken glass bottles... (okay, i was just looking in the wrong spot. but it was right there, man...)
  4. hmm... looking official... having insane distractions... all sound like good ideas to me...
  5. this is my test thread la la la i like tacos
  6. so... sometimes the best stealth... is no stealth... right?
  7. ive only got one, pennsylvania. i really should start on new york... i live only half an hour from the border. there are prolly some good ones floating around up in them hills, right?
  8. yeah... i guess i could have done a better job with the costume thing. but another cacher said to me, hey, there's a cache here... you wanna look for it? thing was, he already found it, so he couldnt help me... not like it would have helped me look any more normal anyway. the cell phone thing... i actually suggested that. i came up with a list of things to camoflage yourself... cell phone... fake a camera, take a picture of a couple people... check your blood sugar levels... plenty of weird things you can do with those things. and of course, i have actually taken pictures with cameras to act natural. well, at least as natural as any "n00b tourist" would act...
  9. im having a problem with doing some caches in public places with any stealth... i mean, today, i found a cache hidden underneath a sign... only a couple things were a little weird. 1. the street i was doing this on was a setup/arrangement site for floats for a 4th of july parade 2. there was a line of six portapotties right next to the sign. 3. i was wearing a costume... nothing too standout-ish, just clothes from 100 years ago. so yeah, whatever i did to find/rehide the cache was pretty horrible. i managed to wait til the area was clear when i found it, but rehiding it... oh man, it was bad... one of my main strategies is to pretend like i found something where i want to go (like throwing a dollar bill down, and picking it up, acting surprised, etc.) i dont think whoever was watching bought the dollar-bill excuse. i mean, losing a hacky-sack near a playground while kids are playing is one decent way to rehide the cache near the under the slide... i thought that was downright clever. nonetheless, i still kinda... what's the word... stink like old sauerkraut. (okay, words.) does anyone have any suggestions for going about a little more discretely? any sleight of hand that anyone practices? i usually wear black or other dark colors, so i dont stick out like a sore thumb. but is there anything else i could do?
  10. ooh.... idea... kinda working off of what geocyclist was thinking... so the starting co-ords lead you to one box. inside the box is the puzzle, with numbers on it in different fashions. a note inside says that more boxes are located at 4 (or as an alternative, 6) locations, and the co-ords are given. it is up to the person to then take the puzzle (already assembled) and figure out the sets of numbers that make up four (or six) four-digit lock combinations. numbers are on the puzzle in different ways, like all on one face, all in the same color, all circled or underlined, etc. some of the numbers would have to be on the inside of the puzzle, so the person has to take it apart to get to them. here's where i get really demonic... i dont give the order of the numbers. once you get to the cache, you have to try different combinations of the 4 digits until you find one that works. of course, it doesnt end there... once you find each of the other containers and unlock them, they all have a number inside them, plus part of the co-ords of a final cache. when you find all four (alt:six) containers, you find the final cache container, locked with another 4-digit combination lock (alt: master lock with six digits... you know, the right-left-right dial kind). again, the order of the digits is not given (though with the six-digit alternative, some logic can get rid of possibilities... you know, no number higher than 39). but once you open that cache container, then... you get another combination... no, just kidding. it ends there. nice prize for the ftf. other alternatives and options... i considered telling the seeker how the numbers were arranged on a paper in the first container (like "1st container-blue digits). i also considered telling the person which group of numbers went with which lock. (just think about it... i originally considered having the people take four digits from the puzzle and going to every container, trying each one til they found the right one, and having them try every combination too... man, i am a little too evil for my own good...) i think i should at least give them an idea which group goes where. dang, i had another idea... what was it? ah well... so what do you think about what i have going on right now? aside from the fact that it'd cost a ton of money?
  11. whats this? avatars-while-u-wait? um, okay... all the 'tars i make are loads of un-avatar-ly crap. i dont even have one for this board yet. (second post, what do you expect?) since i entirely lack creativity (well i have ideas... but ones that would require researching some weird anime for character designs, then completely resketching a couple characters out... not that i dont think that you can do it, but... i wouldnt put you through anything i couldnt do myself, knowing that regardless, you'd do it better) wow, i wasted that paragraph... since i entirely lack creativity, i'd say just go with something simple and music related, like a couple eighth notes with the geocache colors or something. i dont know. its a stupid idea, but it'll do for now. then again, i skipped eight pages worth of stuff... did someone already have an idea like this?
  12. i am fairly new to geocaching. (first bb post... gotta be new.) i've got about thirteen finds under my belt, about half with other cachers. however, ive been looking into placing my own cache. i have a good large area selected that i'd like to place it in. nice woods, good running stream... it'd be one where you definitely get your feet wet, unless you do some massive bushwhacking a/o backtracking. however, since this is my first hide, i want to make it special... i dont know, im just stupid like that. but anyway, i read a thread on here about puzzle caches. and i was like, man, that has my name written all over it... too bad there arent any within... oh, say... a hundred miles of me. might as well make one... along my cache-searching exploits, i took a puzzle with me... its one of those impossible 4-piece interlocking puzzles that you give to a "friend" just to watch them get aggrevated. well, more or less... it took me two seconds to figure it out. insert picture here. (kinda ripped from the binary arts website... i guess this counts as citing it.) anyway... i was wondering... huh... for a puzzle cache, why not try using that puzzle thing? ive wanted to get it off my hands now for some time... was too stupid to leave it at a cache site... might as well get some good mileage out of it... simply put, my question is this... how would you recommend (granted, you dont know the exact terrain, but still) setting up a puzzle cache, using that 4-piece puzzle? i have an idea, but im still looking for ideas.
