Hi all-
I am a board member for my NY area business association. We have a charitable foundation that raises money and stages events for those in need in the tri-state area. We have run an event annually at a summer camp in Blairstown for kids with cancer for many years. I have been asked to set up a geocaching afternoon on the camp grounds for the campers as part of our schedule of activities. We have purchased 7 GPSrs that we will donate to the camp after the event - as it turns out, they had these on their "wish list" equipment wanted. Geocaching is a natural for this event - it has always been a pirate theme (in fact, the kids always anticipate the arrival of pirate day every year) and we have done low-tech treasure hunts in the past. The kids range in age from 6 through teen. I will tell you, spending a day with these kids is truly inspirational and I look forward to being the every year.
Basically, I am posting to solicit feedback. Here are my thoughts on organizing this....There will be 7 teams. I am thinking about approaching this is a 10 stage multi - 9 caches with coordinates (specific for each team - I will put a separate card in the cache for each team so that they are directed in different ways and don't arrive at the same cache at the same time - in theory anyway). The 10th cache will be a "treasure chest" with various goodies for all of the campers - we will make 7 separate final stages so that all teams find a unique treasure chest. We would get locking containers so that they need to find the right chest that they have the key for. Worthy of note - there will be an adult counselor and volunteer with each group. I am thinking of giving the adults clues to each cache along with a photo of the cache location as an absolute bailout if needed.
Anyone have any thoughts on this plan? How about the difficulty level - should I keep it fairly easy, large containers? Anyone want to volunteer to help me out in Blairstown sometime during the seond week of July?
Thanks in advance for anything you have to offer.
