  2. It sounds like you're using the SMS email address. You need to change your email address to the following: your10digitphonenumber@mms.mycingular.com That one uses multimedia messages instead of standard SMS messages, so you're not restricted on the length like a regular message. Hope that helps!
  3. Sorry, the unit sold this morning in town. Thanks!

  6. Yup, same here in Illinois. Maybe they need to reboot it?
  7. I've only been on 4 geocaches so far (in the past 2 weekends I might add!) but I always go by myself. It's just nice to get away for a little bit and enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. I haven't been on any long dangerous hikes as of yet, but I'm always careful as I can be. I do need to invest in some hiking boots and a walking stick one of these days. (maybe I can borrow one from House??) Of course I do have to mention I also go storm chasing by myself, something that really isn't recommended to do solo. Other than the incident with the grain bin in the middle of the interstate, I've managed to survive. (PM if you're interested in that story) So I guess the bottom line is if you have friends/family that are interested in going with you (ones that you enjoy spending time with!) then invite them along. If not, hit the trails on your own and just be prepared. I carry a cell phone and ham radio with me, so I should be covered should I need to call for assistance. Have fun!
  8. Hello fellow geocacher and Axim X30 owner! I stumbled across a program called BeeLineGPS and have to say it's the handiest thing ever for paperless caching. Once you import the GPX from the pocket query, you're ready to go. No internet needed to view the cache information, it's all stored in the GPX file. I log everything once I get back to the car and then post the information when I get back home. Fun stuff! Here's a link to the software: http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/default.htm
  9. I've been following the geocaching stuff for several years now, but have yet to go out and find a cache. (I have helped a coworker hide a cache though) At the beginning of the year, I purchased a bluetooth GPS for my Pocket PC along with a nifty geocaching program called BeeLineGPS. I was hoping to do some caching this spring or summer, but just never got around to it. In August I purchased a bicycle and decided I had to have a GPS for it, so I picked up a Garmin GPS60CSx. I could have gone the basic eTrex or other low-end GPS, but I really liked the features of the 60CSx. (the $50 rebate helped a tad too!) My vision was to actually ride the bike to local parks in the area and do a little geocaching, yet that never materialized. So I had decided this morning that I was going to hit a local park to take some pictures of the pretty trees and leaves. Unfortunately I didn't realize that they'd all blown away, so that kinda shot that idea down. Before I departed home, I had loaded up some area geocaches into the pocket pc and my GPS. I pulled up one out in the country (GCXFG7) and decided to go after it and see what happened. I parked the car and read the clue on the pocket pc and then went treking with the GPS60csx. About 5 minutes later I discovered this coffee can cache and opened it up. I didn't have anything with me to leave nor did I have a pen, but luckily the log book inside had a pen attached to it so I was able to sign the log. I carefully repacked everything and sealed the coffee can back up, then took a moment to rejoice as I found my first geocache! I went back to the car and marked the cache as found and wrote a little note to remind myself to log it when I got back home. I looked on the GPS and noticed another cache (GCGY51) about a mile up the road. Why not go after it while I'm here? I drove towards it and then parked where it told me to and got out looking for the cache. This one would prove much more difficult to find given the terrain of trees and thorny things. The clue stated that there was supposed to be a path to follow to get to the cache, but there was no path that I could find. I battled my way through the trees, twigs, and small hills. (some slightly muddy too) I kept glancing at the GPS and noticed I was getting closer, but I was really having issues with the terrain. What was left of the thorn branches kept grabbing my jacket and pants in some attempt to 'protect' the cache! I battled on and shortly after saw the little tupperware container next to a tree. Hurray!!! Once again, TNLNSL. However I guess you could say I took home a few battle-wounds and thorns embedded in my pants. So I have to say it was a great morning and I really enjoyed finding the 2 caches. I definitely would prefer caches like the ones I found out in the country rather than have to battle a local urban park. I felt like a kid on Christmas when finding the caches, it was very cool. It was nice to get some use out of my techy gadgets too. I took a few pictures while I was out there and hope to post them on here later on. (is it ok to post pictures of the cache and it's location?) I just went ahead and signed up for a 1 year subscription, so now I'll be able to enjoy geocaching even further. (I had signed up awhile back for a monthly subscription, but I'd rather just do a year so I don't have to set aside $3/mo!) Thanks to all for your wonderful stories which inspired me to get off my duff and go enjoy this wonderful hobby. -Stan
  10. I mailed mine for the 60CSx on September 14th, 2006, so we'll see what happens. I made copies of everything just in case.
  11. Yeah, I saw that page too. I guess I'm just looking for some hands-on reviews from the geocaching community. Something that will handle GPX files would be good too. Thanks! -Stan
  12. Greetings to all! I've been lurking around here since June 2004 but have never actually gone looking for a geocache yet. However, a co-worker and I hid a cache here in town and it seems to be well-liked: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...47-5c16453e3f60 I don't like paper mainly because it takes up too much space and I eventually lose it. I bought a Dell Axim X30 pocket pc last year and use it for all sorts of things. I ordered a Holux GR-236 bluetooth GPS which should be here sometime this week, so I'm anxious to get started on my geocaching adventures. I guess the meaning of the post is to find out what PDA software you all use for geocaching. I asked around over on AximSite and got several responses: BeelineGPS http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/default.htm GPS Tuner http://www.gpstuner.com GPSXSonar http://gpxsonar.homeip.net/default.aspx These all seem pretty nifty, but don't want to buy them all for $$$ reasons. (well GPSXSonar is freeware) BeelineGPS seems to be more geared towards geocaching than GPS Tuner. I guess I'd like to know which one you all prefer for geocaching? Also, is there anyway to bring in road/topo maps and overlay the geocache waypoints on them? (this would be nice if I'm just driving around and have an itch to find a cache) Normally I'd do a detailed search before posting such questions, but the search feature appears to be under construction. Thanks for all the help! -Stan
