  1. Um. I guess I get it now. the reverse engineered part was clear, and the no gps part is much clearer now. still off topic though. www.gpswnj.com
  2. 1117 from zip code 07666 (teaneck, NJ) I knew we were pretty dense around here. whoops. that didn't sound right. www.gpswnj.com

So how does one obtain the coordinates without a GPS so they can provide them in the log then? Kinda seems as if a GPS IS a required item... www.gpswnj.com

  8. I think it would be useful to be able to rate the terrain/difficulty. After all who is a better judge of the difficulty then those who've had to find it? certainly they're a better judge then the placer because the placer is too close to the subject matter. the method of "how" is the really *****. I don't know how to make it fair so I can't help there but I do support the concept. I also support the idea of ratings for the cache itself. again, I don't know what's the best manner of implementation. What i think is far more useful and much less controversial is an ignore button. When I click on "caches near me" I can eminate from appearing those caches that I have no interest in finding, whethers it's a 5/5 multileg which would be over my head, or for those whom dislike them: LC/VC's. it can't hurt, it can only make your searches quicker and less annoying having to wade thru listings I know you don't want to be bothered with. www.gpswnj.com
  9. well, here's my cache, which was "too limiting" as it was a NJ only cache. 3 days ago we have this cache which is limited to just Idaho. How can mine be rejected when caches are being approved despite having the same limitations I'm being penalized for. Note: this is NOT about getting my cache approved. I'm only concerned with the approval process. as for similar caches, there's Front Door to the Fast Lane and Nascar Tracks. the only difference is the first is winston cup tracks only, the later one is any nascar track. as for It's a cache but not as we know it and Cache Bay, they're identical but its not as simple as that. the cache bay was an actual cache at first. then Its a cache was created. subsequent to that cache bay was plundered & the owner converted it to a locationless. I suggested to the owner that they cooperate to say that instead of one log per location, it applies to both caches so that no1 can log a find on a location if that location was used on either cache already. it's the only fair way to handle what is a really akward situation... www.gpswnj.com

  11. Sometimes It'd be nice to meet someone else but generally I agree. I wanna find it myself & i don't want to be pressured knowing someone is on my tail or just ahead of me. on occasion though its actually cool. I had planned to recheck coordinates on a cache placed awhile before. lo & behold someone released a cache right nearby the day before. I knew the local crew can get an early start but I was planning to head out at sunrise anyway. was first to the cache, moved mine and on the return ran into stayfloopy. joined him on the route back to the cache, then he went after my cache in a beta test of sorts. he frequently caches with his mom & dad, so it was quite cool actually. but in general I'd rather not. then again if it happened more maybe I'd like it more??? www.gpswnj.com

  13. I knew a spot that I couldnt really place a cache in (even a micro) withoiut expecting it to be plundered quick, then I hit on an easy easy way around it. I grabbed one of those hidea key magenetic base jobbers, placed a welcome letter as a log sheet and 2 WG and clipped it to the underside of a metal railing. almost invisible unless you're looking for it. just find something metal and you're good to go. I would just make sure to say that its a WG only cache. easy, cheap, and it works. www.gpswnj.com
  14. clues that include hyperbole, random thoughts & other nonsense that I must decode to get to the point. clues that are too vague or not really helpful. caches descriptions that dont tell you what you're looking for in terms of container. caches that are underrated. I have no issue with overrating. staff members approving locationless caches that are identical to exisitng ones. that REALLY irritates me, considering the hoops I've had to jump thru to make mine approvable. clearly mine go right to the rules lawyers... www.gpswnj.com

  16. I recently submitted a locationless cache which was denied and I really just felt the need to question something. When the locationless cache was created as a catagory, a lot of caches were approved of questionable nature. Most were not unique enough of a hunt, and so a backlash began. Eventually Jeremy created rules. One thing that was stressed was that you shouldn't use previously established caches as a reason why yours should be approved. Initially I felt all of these new rules & guidlines were good, but I'm having trouble with this one. Here's why. Let's say I submit a locationless cache where the subject matter is not stationary. It gets rejected. I point to "yellow jeep" or any of the other vehicle-based locationless caches and say,"But you approved THEM. why not mine?" Well that was them, this is now and the rules have changed, which is the point. under the new rules those wouldn't have been approved but they're grandfathered, so you can't use them as a basis to approve yours. Fine, but.... I recently submitted a cache that was limited almost entirely to NJ. I won't bother explaining the what & why because they're irelevant to my point. Initially it was denied because it was deemed too commerical (something I knew might be an issue going in but I hoped perhaps a compromise might be worked out) As the discussion went back and forth over fixes to this problem, an amazing thing occured. I conceeded that this really was too commercial while the person I was communicating with was actually willing to conceed that it wasn't so commercial as to be a valid reason for denial. What a role-reversal! Because of my own feelings now, I'm not bothering to discuss the specifics... I'm not looking for public support to approve it. I was told if I made a forum discussion and got support it'd be approved. I just am not all that concerned to make it a public discussion... The reason now for denying it was that it was too limited geographically. ?????? There are a number of caches approved POST RULES CHANGES which are limited to a narrow area, including a few that are limited to a specific state. What annoys me is that I'm not supposed to point to other caches and say "but why not mine", but I really have to say to myself that if two weeks before you approve a cache that is identical in nature (in terms of being geographically limiting) but then deny mine, where is the fairness? What is the reasoning? What guidlines did I violate if you approved these others one quite recently? I can only think of two possible reasons for this denial. A) that this was just a line & they really felt it was too commercial. (Doubtful) or the guidelines are really in a constant state of flux due to the whims of those in charge. And if that's true then I think that really does put a crimp in people's abilities to create good Locationless caches. What do you all think? NO LC bashing please. Those opinions are valid, but they're off-topic here. I just want to know what people think about the approval process. on a somewhat related note, I'd like to know what's teh deal with approving locationless caches that have identical topics as previously approved ones, i.e. it's a cache but not as we know it & Cache bay, or ghostbusters & haunted caches. Then there's fast lane which is for winston cup race tracks, and the newly approved NASCAR cache which is for winston cup, busch of craftsman series. wayyyy too similar! After thinking about these gaffs, I actually suspect something far simplier: your odds of approval is to a very large degree dependant on who is examing your cache for approval. Some are rules lawyers, some not. Some know whats out there, and some clearly don't. What annoys me is when there's such an obvious divergence of opinions among the approvers.... 18. i was at my desk, having arrived at 8:30. I work for Verizon, taking calls in a customer service center. we were all shocked but we were still receiving calls, and no one knew it was terrorism till after the 2nd one hit. Then it was obvious and by about 915 the calls dropped to a trickle so we all were sitting at out desks chattering and speculating, with words occasionally trickling in from those in the break room. After maybe another 30 minutes it suddenly occured to me that my wife's aunt works in the tower. I suffer from stress (among other things) and so I went home on FMLA leave. I found out that her daughter developed a fever of 102 at 3AM, and she was at the pediatrician at the time of the air strike. Mysteriously her fever hd cleared up by then without the application of any medicine. Weird, eh? Course we didn't know this at the time. I spent the day watching the video replay over & over & over, as they just kept kitting us over the head with that same horrible footage. (Sorry this is one pet peeve I have about the media coverage is how they aired the shot of the towers crashing only about 1200X that day) I watched even though I didn't want to. I couldn't NOT watch. I have tried to avoid all coverage of the anniversary as much as possible, but found myself watching two specials last night & one right now. Thankfully two of the three are scientific in nature, dealing with the construction of the WTC (I never knew that battery park didnt exist till they dumped the dirt they dug up to make the foundation, over there. neat!) The other dealt with the specific reasons for the collapse itself from an architectural POV. the last focused on those little canadian towns that took in the passengers whose flights got diverted when the air space was shut down. To me this should've received so much more coverage then it did. The way those towns opened the hearts to americans was absolutely astounding. "Welcome to Canada, eh?" To make this note on-topic to geocaching, there was a segment tonight dealing with the debris field. Rescuers couldn't tell where they were on the debris field. Also when they found a body part they wanted to document where it was found. Also if they could locate certain pieces of building debris they might be able to locate "huddle spots" of victims. Enter the GPS. A map making company mapped the area topographically which helped tremendously, then later GPS units were given out with little drop down lists for what they rescuer found, and then they logged the waympoint. very cool! www.gpswnj.com [This message was edited by Gwho on September 11, 2002 at 07:40 PM.]
  19. I had a problem with geobuddy claiming my caches were dangerous. he fell & hurt his head because the cache was placed on unstable ground, another time he got bit by a snake on another hunt. He also logged 3 other finds, and never had any problems, then he disapeared. I was quite annoyed and a few people who keep tabs on favorite caches emailed me how ridiculous this all sounded. Now I suspect I know who this is & why they did but I've no proof so I never pursued it. One day I notice a forum entitled "beware the geobuddy fraud" another person who saw this crap for what it was publically came out & said watch out for him. The average response was that this guys logs sounded fake, they seemed out to get me, and that this guy was phony as a $3 bill. I eventuallly decided to try & see if I could feret out any info, and asked jeremy if the email address matched the email address of any other geocaching acct. turns out the guy used my own email address but @yahoo.com. that was enough for jeremy, who pulled the logs & cancelled the account. My point is that if someone is out to get someone or make life miserable it'll be pretty obvious. bear in mind though that there are two sides to every story. in theory, geobuddy could've really gotten hurt, but no one really believed it. this person who was being harrassed, I don't know the specifics, but if it's true that they were being unfairly maligned, then I would, as an outsider, let that person know that i felt they were being rude, or (and this is the most likely option) I would ignore them. Silence speaks quite loudly. bill www.gpswnj.com
  20. my brother in-law constantly makes geocaching jokes. my wife thought it would be cool but it became a chore as we tried to seek caches eithout adequate time to do them. Then it got cold. Ixnay on the caching-ay in the cold-ay. Shes not in terribly good shape and since then her health has gotten worse, and she suffers badly from fatique. However... I've found my 3 yr old son enjoys hunting for 1/1's. with my wife's medical problems under control, and with her losing a LOT of weight, I think she'll be in shape by next summer, so by then... hopefully she'll start coming out with me again. www.gpswnj.com
  21. Well maybe not as quickly as I used to, but I'm still in sucky shape. I believe my legs are developing armor due to roughing it thru thornbushes with shorts on though... www.gpswnj.com
  22. I was done at a beach cleanup when i found an unusual memorial. I even took pictures. came home & found thatn earlier that same day someone created a VC from it. I logged the find. I was there that day, I answered the question I considered it a valid find. So what that I didn't know it was a cache till I got home? Now on the other hand if someone created a cache weeks later, that'd be kinda unfair to log it without going back. It all comes down to whether or not you want to be a rules lawyer or not. Some people are, and some people aren't. I've gone to locaitonless caches sites and forgotten to take a picture of the GPS. I've been honest & up front and I've not had a problem before. On the other hand there is a cache called Locks of britain. Find a loch (as in a canal) and log a find. The description doesn't say "in england only" but come on folks, it says "Locks of BRITAIN" not "Locks of the world" or "locks" it says Britain, so whadaya think? Someone from the US logged a find which prompted a note from someone about not being able to read, which prompted the response it doesntr specifically say England only. My feeling: I know what he meant. I asked and the cache owner said yes, he meant britain but he never said that so "I guess I'll accept US logs." Well I found a lock recently and I havent logged a find because I don't think it would be in keeping with the placers intent. Bottom line is: do what you feel is right. Just bear in mind that not everyone will agree and don't whine if they don't. www.gpswnj.com
  23. I just picked up topo usa 4.0 & I love it. I cant say if it does the thingsd you're asking about because I just got it and for some annoying reason delorme products dont come with a manual pre-printed. 147 sheets of paper & a trip to the store for a new catridge later I printed out the manual. havent had a chance to crack it open all the way, just read up enough to get started. and was very impressed. I especially liked the 3d maps. That was way impressive. www.gpswnj.com
  24. I don't think this thing is a good idea. Can summon authorities in an ermegency? Cell phone can do the same thing & once they call the new 3G phones with the ability to id your location, that'll make them better then this thing for summoning police. Can only be unlocked by parents. ewwww! You've got to be seriously paranoid to id tag your kid like some panda bear to track his movements. I'm sorry but kidnappings are actually rare. I think it's nothing but spying on your kids. You can't truly trust your kids to be where they say they'll be and do the right thing unless you let them out of your site & let them test the waters. it signals you if they aren't where they're supposed to be? Great, so you're gonna get a fax alert because your kid went to Joey's house when he usually goes to Sam's house. I read where they've developed the equivilent of a black box for your car so you can tell how bad a driver your kid is, and when it exceed certain parameters, i.e specific speed, or sharpness of a turn, it warns them with an alert. great just great. so they becomes pavlovs dog at the wheel. I'm sorry folks. This is technology run amok. Sounds great till you examine the behavior & thought patterns behind it. Turth is this scares me a lot. I would never EVER want to subject my kid to this stuff. Otherwise I'll never trust them, never stop owrrying about them and they wouldn't ever feel as if they were trustworthy either. www.gpswnj.com
