quote:Originally posted by Huntnlady:MOVING CACHES IS NOT OKAY. What about taking it home with you? I had a cache find today that was about the size of a margarin tub (clear container) that was sitting in the crux of a tree completely out in the open and visible from 100 feet away to me as I pulled into the parking lot. There literally is no way to hide this size cache anywhere within 500 feet, probably not anywhere in the park. I wish I had my camera to show just how exposed this was. I took it home and told the owner I'd give it back to him at his convenience. Incidently the hider has yet to find a single geocache, and has hidden one other which was in a questionable location security wise and had really bad coordinates. This person unfortunately was not skilled in hiding since they had yet to find. I figure I'm doing him a favor and hope it was taken as contrsuctive criticism. So I disagree with the NEVER part of the statement. Generally speaking it's not cool, but never say never, IMHO william

Post a log directed to the geocacher? NO. Email them and instruct them to change it to a NF? Yes. You havent yet named them here, and unless I wanna hunt it down, wont know who they are. Putting it public on the logs probably isnt needed. Yet. If they refuse, well then you be justified to name them and even delete the "find" william

Stop the Whoring of Geocaching!!!!
lostinjersey replied to Squealy's topic in General geocaching topics
I pretty much agree with the sentiments expressed earlier. I've taken part in such an article (and the interview was reduced to one incoherent sentance too. ) Anyway, as long as they interview experiences cachers, generally the articles tend to be positive, which IMHO counter balances those articles written by folks who DONT interview anyone and trash/smash us and the sport. Typically this would be someone who a wrongful impression of us, or who thinks wer're trashing the environment (the cavers come to mind here) Cold it invite novices who will ruin things? perhaps. But thats no guarentee, and the positive impression is definately worthwhile. Besides there are new uses for GPS receivers every day so people are more & more likely to "git it" when we explain what it is that we do. william william -

I would post this discussion in the general folder so it gets more exposure. IF that is true, and I say if, then thats a serious charge. Have you tried contacting Magellan? about the timing as well as the crappy coordinates? william

I have enjoyed geocaching as a hobby, both the hiding as well as the finding, but I have found myself with less & less time to cache and feel I am just unable to maintain all my caches. I won't bother you with details, but family comes before hobbies and a choice had to be made. No I'm not retiring, but I will be doing little caching, and I don't want to archive these caches as I sense that most have been well liked. However I simply am unable to maintain them. Just knowing that i bear the responsibility is a mental distraction in and of itself. So I am seeking out individuals to assume responsibility for the following caches: Zabriski Point The Library on Old 9W Lad's Buttons Robert Cadgenes Estate The 3 new caches I've placed are so new as to not be something I will turn over to anyone as of yet. There is an element to the two Palisades caches that will require maitenance of them in about 4 months, and at that point I will decide whether or not to archive them. They will not be turned over to anyone. I will never give up the downed jet or John Ringling's mansion as they are my favorite hides ever. The rest of my caches are VC or LC so they require little more then cursory maitenance. Anyone wishing to take these caches over will assume full resposnibility, and I assume we can get the website to list that person as the owner and not me. Person must be able to maintain them, and should have already found them so they know where the heck it is should it need to be checked on. william An arundo donax is a reed, often confused with bamboo which is used in the making of musical instruments. I was just notified that by Roosteroo that my Van Slyke Castle cache was found on the trail, plundered. He says... <<Hello, my name is Keith. I have become responsable for trail maint. on the castle point trail that your geocache Van Slyke's castle is on. Today I was out on the trail to do maint. and decided to check on the cache along the way. I found it out in the open empty. Very water logged geocache notice nearby with bowling pin dealy. Looked around in hopes to recover the log book. No such luck. I took what I found, what would you like to do? Let me know as I do have the container and enjoyed this cache very much.>> For those who found this cache, you know that the odds of being stumbled onto are slim to none. Set back from the ruins is the remains of a basement, just walls and a stairs with a railing. it was stashed under the stairrs and the entire area was ringed with barbed wire, whoops, excuse me, thorn bushes. Very few people would go down there because theres nothing to see that cant be seen from the top. And what reason would anyone have to stick their hands under the stairs? Plus it had camo tape making it harder to see. Logically I must assume it was stolen. I am wondering if anyone else has had their cache stolen. I recall finding Cheeky's Hideout was turned upside down and scattered but not so badly that it was irreparable, and that almost a year ago to the day. Wondering if anyone else has found any dumped caches, stolen caches, etc. william An arundo donax is a reed, often confused with bamboo which is used in the making of musical instruments. I placed a virtual last saturday called It Happened Here? At PC Richards. I havent placed a virtual lately, but know that the rules are different. you can't palce a micro here, and it's a very important site, historically, that you'd have no way of knowing about otherwise. So I submitting it, and it took i think 5 days to be approved. I was wondering about the delay, but chalked it up to it being under discussion. I did make it clear that a micro wouldnt work, it was an important site, etc. now i'm wondering what really was behind the delay? <<<shrug>>> william An arundo donax is a reed, often confused with bamboo which is used in the making of musical instruments. Cache on Hold - Best Argument in Support of Approval
lostinjersey replied to Pantalaimon's topic in General geocaching topics
quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:I have the same problem with virtuals that require a photo for verification. Since I don't have a digital camera, it's hard for me to log these caches. But what does a camera have to do with geocaching? I found the cache with my GPS. Why do I have to supply a photo? I'm sure there is something else I can use to verify that I found it. generally there are only two reasons why. either a) the person didn't look hard enough for something useable as verification, or the item could easily be figured out via the net, and the answer as well, making it easy to be faked, or C) there really is nothing at all useable. I can think of two virts I did that fall into these catagories. Drive on the Parkway is a posrterchild for "driveby" as you can't stop and there is nothing around to use. i eventually asked for the clearances on the next 3 bridge overpasses. then with a piece of history, which was white manna (now archived) I didnt want to force people to inside so i asked for info on a nearby business, but that was fraught with problems too. neither really made for a good virt which is why i archived them. we could just use the honor system but somehow that doesnt sound like a good idea. william An arundo donax is a reed, often confused with bamboo which is used in the making of musical instruments. People complainers, police conducted more sweeps. TELL THEM quote:3. Should we mark these spots so that others in the future do not put caches there? Good idea except for three problems: how do you "mark" them? A forum thread will eventualyl get pushed down out of site. two: things may change and remain changed. How would you unmark it? three: I've seen this type of thread before & (sadly) it usually degenerates into gay-bashing which isn't the point. Going so far as to "mark" it would likely draw out both sides in that "discussion" and it likely wouldn't be pretty. The cache owner in my case didnt seem overly concerned. My log eventually fell out of sight, and recently there haven't been too many problems. Lately. Like the tides, these problems occur & receed, occur & receed, so more then likely it will go away. Most of the time they occur in summer because A) it's too cold to do much in winter, and there's little cover for such activity when the trees are bare. ***** william I am not smart enough or witty enough to think of anything worthy of a sig line. anyuone who objects to any stereotyping of VA & WV'ers should know that we don't like stereotypes neither.
