  1. I was going to post this topic until I read it was already here. It's funny, without checking on the GC #, I know the people in the quote above. One was at my 10 year event. What gets me is the absolute lack of information in the newspaper article. I'm not one with links, but if you're curious check out the Lake County Record Bee. It's less than a paragraph and some stupid picture that could be any incident on the side of this highway. They don't even call it by name, they just say something about a treasure hunting game played partially on the internet.

Initially, I was going to say something about terrorists not even knowing where Lake County CA is. Trust me, for those of you who aren't familiar with the area, it's a dump. Pretty lake (sometimes) and pretty mountains, but the towns are absolutely trash with very few exceptions (no offense meant to the OP, please don't take it personally). With that in mind I then thought "Hey, there's a lot of Meth (a LOT) in lake county, this could be something that a ticked off or delusional tweaker or spun out high school kid might do in this area.

I'm hoping this was the concern involved for calling the bomb squad, as there is no way in Hades that a terrorist would strike LC. None.

Now I'm gonna go look at the cache listing.

  2. I'd be more likely to tell you exactly where to look than to make a follow up visit myself.

But given these stats I wouldn't hesitate to post a NA after looking for it and posting my DNF either.

Ya, I agree with this. Depending on the cache, I'd probably tell you where to look too. If it's right near me, I might go look, but otherwise a very detailed description of it's location would probably work for me.

Log the NA, it'll get checked on or it'll get archived. Problem solved either way.

  3. Why am I the first one to comment on his poor choice in pigskin fannage? A Dallas Cowboys tattoo? There are at least 25 teams in the league that should be cheered for ahead of Dallas, and at least 4 of them are closer to Oregon. (Particularly the Raiders  )

On topic, it's about dern time. Congrats!

  4. Last summer we went up to Scotland in their midge season and I was recommended to use the Avon Skin So Soft Dry Oil Body Spray . I was also told it had to be the "soft & fresh" version.

I have a spray bottle of it here ... It has more than 40 yummy things in it including trimethylolpropane, palmitate, ceteareth-20, extracts of saccharomyces lysate and amaranthus caudatus  , diazolidinyl urea... not sure I like the sound of that one too much  , citric acid and citronellol... at least I've heard of those... but no picaridin.

Anyway, as I was obviously a walking chemical factory for the week the stuff seemed to be effective and I didn't get more than 2 or 3 bites. It smells OK, not overpowering and I didn't find it greasy at all. Some may find this interesting: Avoid mosquito bites: Comments about Avon Skin so Soft.

I spent way too long trying to scare that bug off my screen. Really.

Wasn't there a thread a while back about how DEET wasn't nearly as dangerous as some people were making it out to be? My mom just went to Haiti (is still there now, she'll be back sometime soon, went with the local hospital group) and was told by one of our local Northern California minimalist semi-naturalist anti-pharmacutical physicians that DEET was the most effective repellant that there is and that it's benefit far and away outweighs the negatives in the chemical department. She even recommended the 100% DEET, saying that the only difference between that and the 40% was the length of effectiveness.

  5. I wouldn't hesitate to delete the log of the first person on the throwdown logsheet, but I would also probably delete the logs of the other people who signed the wrong one. The difference would be that I would send them and email first and let them know what happened and ask if they had a problem with the deletion. Visiting out of towners logs I would keep intact, as well as those who got back to me and asked that their logs be left alone. If I got contacted, I'd say go ahead and delete, I'll find the real thing. That first log would get iced with extreme prejudice though...

  6. I have seen those too, didn't bother me. I'm sure someone thinks they're fun. Not my cup of tea...

One thing that did bother me lately was that I found a cache, and the cache owner has emailed me now three times trying to sell me stuff and trying to to get me to read his blog. Grrr. I deleted the emails, but if he sends me more... I dunno. I'm normally a pretty laid back person, but I might have to send an email to Groundspeak if it continues.

Do not wait! Report the abuse now.

    Absolutely agree

  7. alternatively, you can post an SBA log on one of them B)

    Puritan!

    (just kidding)

No, you should hide a traditional on the exact same coordinates, and a mystery with that as the bogus coordinates. Heck, I think you can hide a Wherigo with that as the starting coordinates there as well. Then hold an event there. :)

Oh, yeah. and have a multistage starting there. Question to answer, of course, no physical stage.

    Awesome freakin' ideas.

  8. <snip>

I've never fallen a creek, however I have ended up at the bottom of a hill on my butt with rocks in my pants on several occasions, does the noobity class cover that aspect?

    <snip>

Zis depends on the kind of rocks. We frown on common shale; granite, quartz, and mica are highly recommended.

Ummmm..... Shale was involved, but I think i pulled out several strawberry sized quartz, and some of the highly touted very rare round gray variety. Oh, and a handful of acorns.

  9. Honestly, I've always thoroughly disliked the term noob. It just has such a negative sound. As was mentioned above, we all have different ideas about the game in general. Bittsen loves rock pile hides. I love bus stop nanos. Everyone's idea of proficient will be different, even if only a little bit. Individual circumstances make a difference too. My kids prevent me from caching as often as I would like, and limit which caches I can chase, but they also make the caches we can do a whole new experience.

I've actually had people give me dirty looks as I was re-rolling logs, nanos included. I guess when you see someone sitting on a bench in a park rolling a paper with their fingers, there aren't that many things they could be doing.

  10. Agree with ^. If your reviewer gave you the okay, it'll be fine. And as far as the proximity issue is concerned, make sure you have all the caches placed first and just release them as necessary, otherwise your spots may be taken up.

    I think it's a cool idea.

  11. Recently I was attempting to find a cache in a newspaper box for a free, local publication. The cache had been muggled and tossed in the bottom of the paper box. In retrieving it, I dumped all the newspapers. Since I made the mess,l reorganized the papers. A muggle approached thought I was the guy that stocks the papers. He was happy to be my first customer. I played along and thanked him for his patronage and support.

    this is awesome.

  12. I'd have to say my favorite so far is U Are Here Top of The Valley (GC183Z2) (sorry, i'm not adept at posting links). It's a great hike that leads to an iconic local spot that has tremendous views. It's a location that's host to a killer cache that's packed with wicked swag (including a tranquility geocoin). On top of that whole thing, I made the trip with great people and we had a stellar time. I recommend this cache to everyone I get the chance to.

I am so going to do that one. I had heard there was a cache up there, but haven't tried it yet. :)

Bring your hiking pack, it's a bear. Go through Low Gap, the Standly street entrance is private and not very friendly.

  13. I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of people asking opinions/advice on the forums and then getting angry and hostile with the responses they get. Not only that, but it seems that the advice is pretty much the same across the board. I'm sorry you didn't get the response you wanted. It's inappropriate for you to call us into question though, because we gave you our opinions, especially when you asked for them.

As far as the OP goes, I'm indifferent based on your story. You say it's only fact, but it's ripe with opinion and very strangely lacking the other side of the story. Can I sympathize? Yes. I care about the sport. I also realize that there's nothing that can be done in these situations if you can't handle the situation person to person.

    Get over it.

  15. I'm about to grumble about this thread, so if you don't want to read it, stop now.

Alright, here goes. Are we really arguing about what to call these people? Really? That's been a waste of almost half this thread. Call them what you want, as long as it's forum appropriate, who cares?

Second. I've thought this from the beginning of the Rome thread. The Police? REALLY? While I in no way condone the destruction/theiving of caches, you want to waste their time on THIS? REALLY? I have as much pride in my few hides as the next guy does, and I have tons of respect for those of you who have put hours into your containers and lots of thought into your hides, but the Police? Come on folks, with police officers losing their jobs across the country and dangerous things like Meth use on the rise quickly, you really think it's appropriate use of these resources to find the guy who's taking your ammo box? From public property? Don't be the tattle tale kid on the playground, he's as disliked as the guy he tattlinng on.

There, I've vented. I meant it though.
