  1. I've finally figured it out I guess it must have been Yellow Bug that requested, probably last year, (I regret I didn't keep a copy of the cache page) the photo of a yellow eyed penguin with the Dunedin Coords. But when nobody had responded he recently changed the request to the kauri tree pix, hence the cache is still listed as being in Dunedin when in fact it is now in Northland.
  2. No, there's a problem there Swanny. The Photographer's Cache IX (Northland) is a request for a photo of the Tane Mahuta kauri tree situated in the Waipoua Kauri Forest north of Dargaville in the North Island. Somehow the cache is displayed in the Dunedin Map - probably because there has been a cross posting of coordinates with The Photographer's Cache III (I think it was) which gave Dunedin City coords requesting a photo of a Yellow Eyed Penguin.
  3. I use Polymedia's NZMapped (GPS version). I upload and download waypoints, tracks etc to/from the gps. I normally enter up all cache waypoints manually into NZMapped as it is much easier to type with a keyboard than use those fiddly gps buttons, and with the goto button it allows me to see the whereabouts of the cache. I then just clear all waypoints from my gps and then upload a new set of all the waypoints from NZMapped. Very simple. I also transfer to/from Easygps and NZMapped using the gps as the go between. NZMapped also permits printing at any scale though below 1:16000 it gets a bit pixely, as would be expected from a scanned map image.
  4. Loved the survival story. It's an epic! When's the film coming out?
  5. I tend to agree with you Steve. Many of our caches are just too easy. I prefer puzzle type like 'Mission Impossible' (now really impossible due to it's been archived ), Gav's 'Spy x' series, and the excellent 'tricky' series by Gary Maree, Tim and Vida. Give me a multicache and make my gps do some work.
  6. Jeremy has now fixed the problem. Norfolk Island is now able to be selected from the drop down country list on the hide report page.
  7. To clear up any possible confusion I was trying to send a 'hide a cache' report for a cache I have placed on Norfolk Island not a 'log report'. My apololgies for using the wrong terminology. I just wonder if there is a problem with selecting Norfolk Island from the drop down list of countries. There is only one earlier cache on Norfolk Island (GC38CA) but I see that it was hidden using New South Wales, Australia as the country!!! Maybe mark and chrissy also had a problem lodging their 'hide a cache' report
  8. In trying to log a new cache at Norfolk Island I get a HTTP500;100 Internal Server Error - ASP error. The Technical Error (for support personnel) listed the following: Error Type: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC drivers (0x80040E14)[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] INSERT statement conflicted with COLUMN FOREIGN KEY constraint 'FK_cache_coordinates_Country'. The conflict occurred in database 'GEO', table 'Country_Old', column 'ID'. /hide/report.asp, line 373 This message is just gobbledegook to me. I have received this message every time I have tried to submit this cache. Help!
  9. My gps has twice lately displayed a low battery warning. I have had this gps since new (14 months). How do solve this problem.

Hi Joe, What a magnificent effort in attempting S47 E168 confluence. Loved the tale. Hoped you enjoyed your stay. Cheers, Bald Ed
  11. Hi! I'm trying also for Crusso's "Where's In A Name" cache. My username converts to coordinates 22°53.33' i.e. if you can take photos in some place which locates near to E 22°53.33y' (choose the value for y yourself and any S latitude will be acceptable) please contact me. More information about this cache, see: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?pf=&ID=12627 Best wishes, BaldEd
  12. Hi geobard, pix on their way to you as soon as I sort out how to do so. Have to reduce them first and that means I have to delve into the printed words that came with my camera
  13. Hi topher72, pix on their way to you as soon as I sort out how to do so
  14. I agree with ya kaimaikid. Lets everybody make it easy for everyone else. Cheers
  15. From my experience of orienteering in the ozzie native bush in areas adjacent to Ballarat and Bendigo I have to say that there is a vast difference in tree cover density between those areas and NZ/Tasmanian rainforest bush. The 12 is recognised as being superior to the etrex in such areas.
  16. I could be accused of being a little biased but Boulder would be my favourite. The lovely walk out there from Taylors Mistake on a fine day takes some beating. I have very pleasant memories of sitting at the cache site enjoying some fine company, some wine, french bread and cheese whilst admiring the view.
  17. Let me know a date and depending on Shift work requirements I'll try to get there.

    One Year

Read a short article about geocaching in an orienteering club magazine in Aug or Sept last year and did a search on the internet and found geocaching.com. Looked up NZ and discovered that there were some caches near CHCH. Thought nothing more about the activity until I went 4WDing with friends on the Banks Penninsular. I raised the topic of geocaching and mentioned that there was a cache (Ampitheatre of the Gods) somewhere adjacent to where we were at the time but that I had no way of locating it as I didn't have a GPS. My friend say he did (a Trimble Scout) It was an almost forgotten left over from his tramping days some 5 or 6 years earlier. He said that I was free to borrow it. So after I had had a couple of days of practice with it we teamed up the next weekend and hit both the very local Waimak River Stash and Wolfes Bridge. I used the Trimble until I was able to receive the results of some overtime and so the 12XL became my Xmas present to myself. There are still a number of relatively old caches in the local area that I haven't visited yet - but like good wine they will keep and I'll get to them when they're just right to open.
  19. Brilliant. Well done Nandor. This will be well used by all us kiwi geocachers.
  20. Hi Nick, I've have NZMapped GPS version. Whilst I have not used it with a laptop in the car I understand that it can be used as a moving map. I have loaded all 3 South Island CD's onto my desktop to give seamless coverage of the South Island. It works just great. I don't understand the comment that someone made about not being able to upload tracklogs. I do that all the time with my data cable! I do have an issue with the NZMapped's latest GPS update of the topo maps (ie LINZ's April? 2002 release). The scanning of these charts is not up to the excellent standard of the original topos. I sent my update back to Polymedia and have since reloaded all my old charts. A chap at Polymedia admitted that the poor quality came as a surprise to him and that he had not been aware of it until I contacted them. Unless they are going to redo the scanning I will stick with my old topos as the quality both on screen and as printed maps is much superior.

  22. 12XL also has a built in power regulator doing away with the need to transformer etc when using an external power supply. Can handle 10-32vDC.
  23. With my latemodel Garmin 12XL I initially found the 10 metre barrier a little frustrating as I sought my first few caches with it. However I soon realised, like ags, that on getting to 10 metres from a cache to then switch to the coordinate mode and then to literally step over to the exact coordinate. I have found that due to variations and errors between each GPSR (the setter's and the finder's and also the changing satelite positions) you can expect a 10 metre error anyway. the cache will usually be found within a radius of 10 metres of the coordinate site. I just look for likely hidy holes within that radius on reaching the coordinate. Any difficulty I have had is usually due to very subtle hidy hole. I have found that the 12XL lives up to it's reputation of providing excellent coverage under tree cover.
  24. I am afraid the idea of seeking out benchmarks doesn't excite me.
