  1. check out Canada Post's website. Find Canadian Postal Codes Here!
  2. Has anyone has experience with OCAD? I have just downloaded version 6 of OCAD software which is now freeware, but I don't have much experience using this type of software. I am trying to create a map of our schoolyard and surrounding forest for orienteering and geocaching from aerial photos, 1:50000 topo maps and school division grounds maps. Has anyone used this software who can help me out? Thanks
  3. I have just recieved 10 yellows too and I will be caching as part of my Outdoor Ed class wil grade 7-9's. There are several staff members here who cache as well. Keep promoting it!
  4. A few years ago we rescued a pure bred husky from the local shelter. Although we really love him, he was already well set in his ways, and is a definite type A personality. I definitely agree with getting a pup and starting training early. Our old dog doesn't want to learn new tricks!

    Edmonton

I am not saying that there aren't good caches in Edmonton. Edmonton is certainly not Deadmonton. Give it time! I haven't found a bad cache yet, and as you can see, I'm pretty new at this. I'm in Edmonton almost every two weeks and I appreciate the work of all those who have place great caches in the area. Keep up the good work! We appreciate it!

    Edmonton

I agree that there is a definite lack of concentration of caches in the Edmonton area, and for that matter much of northern Alberta. I think this will change over time as the sport grows. We can do our part by creating new caches and maintaining them properly. I am finally going to do my part and put a few out in NE Albera soon. Perhaps a cache event in Edmonton in the near future would help too?
  7. I too am working on a night cache in the Cold Lake area. I'm going to use Firetacks so cachers have to find their way to a cache with the coordinates in the dark using the reflectors. They then have to traverse in the dark to the actual cache, OR they can come back during the day. Perhaps I could add a stipulation that that cache by evidenced by a photo of the cache taken at night too!
  8. Two words: Mac support. I am spending a fortune on third party software and hardware! I guess I'm just a geek, and I could always cache without the PDA and laptop, but that's no fun!
  9. 10 bucks US is steep. I paid 10 bones CANADIAN for cans in good shape at a surplus store in Edmonton, Alberta.
  10. Let's try that again. This is Haida, our geodog. He is also called Houdini as he loves to escape- three times on Christmas eve from my inlaws "secure" backyard.
  11. My dog hasn't been of much help out in the bush, however my friend's Bernese Mountain dog found a cache for us in Edmonton here. Chungo found the cache and was digging through the snow. He then stuck his nose in the hole where the cache was hidden. He sure received a lost of treats for that great find. If your dog does find a cache be sure to give him credit in the log!
  12. I checked out the price on motion sensing cameras for these auto-voyeur type caches. They're extremely expensive! CamTrakker digital costs as much as $750 US for a digital camera inside the camo box. Too expensive for my blood. I think I'll just hide out by a cache and take pictures from up in a tree!
  13. I just bought a used M125 off of eBay moments ago. Up until a week ago I used an M125 until I got ahold of an m515 for FREE! The only thing I found about the m125 is that you need to get a hard case for it (unless you already have one). I had a bodyglove neoprene case that didn't wuite cut it. I would be caching and looking around for a few hours and then I would take out the m125 (which was is my inside pocket (it's northern Canada, and it's darn cold up here -40C tonight) and the palm had been for hours. I guess the case was bumping to power button and I was wasting batteries like crazy! Great buy for 21 bucks. I assume that's american? So that must be around 50 bucks up here.
  14. I recently "upgraded" from a 4 year old m125 to a 2 year old m515 (my mother got one free and had never used it so I "borrowed") it. Cachemate works great, and I was able to beam all of my gpx files from the old Palm to the new one. Plus Palm supports Mac so well, unlike Garmin. I just had to get MacMConvert and I was on my way. I'm definitely keepin third party companies in business with all of the programs I have purchased as of late.I will never go back to printing out cache pages again!
  15. I try to listen to the music of nature. Of course, I also want to hear if a large animal is growling or running at me too. I guess that if I can hear a bear breathing, I'm toast anyways.
  16. I'm a mac user as well as I refuse to run virtual PC on my beloved mac. Try Hike Tech you do need a DB9 to USB adapter but the program is much cheaper that forking out tons of cash for a copy of virtual PC. You're making me drool mentioning a G5! Macs rule! Garmin, support my Mac!!
  17. Where might someone get ahold of this attachment. I've never heard of it before.
  18. Has anyone done or created a true night only cache in Alberta? I'm looking for one, but I've only seen ones from Ontario and south of the border. I realize that almost any cache can be made a night cache, but I am talking about caches that require it to be dark. Has anyone done this type of cache in Alberta?
  19. We've removed a cache that was broken into by an animal here in northern Alberta. The container was frozen into the ground and we had to chip the logbook out of the ice. We knew the owners from the (small) local caching community and after we contacted them they were very thankful that we brought the cache back to our city. In this case I didn't hesitate, but if I didn't know the owner I would have just sent a note.
  20. I'm looking for benchmarks in Alberta. I don't know how to go about a Pocket query for them and I don't know where they might be. Any help would be appreciated.
  21. I'm not quite in Saskatchewan, but I often go out to play in Saskatchewan. There is a definite lack of caches in my area (Cold Lake) but I hope to change that over the next few months. Visit Cold Lake!
  22. My geocanine's name is Haida, named after the Northwest Coast Aboriginals of British columbia. I have always been fascinated by huskies, and 3 years ago we had the opportunity to rescue one from the pound.
  23. As a novice cacher I personally am glad that people continue to remind us new into the game (obsession, lifestyle, or however else you describe it) that cache creation is something that should not come lightly. I personally could have in my zeal and ignorance created a cache as soon as I got into the game, but instead, after reading the forums, I am taking the time to reasearch what works and what doesn't work when it comes to creating and placing a cache. I personally thank those who are pursuing the cause of high quality caches, especially with high quality contents.
  24. My avatar has some "deeper" meaning. It is a play on our last name: Nichol. The coin also signifies to everyone that we are proud Canadians. If you look closely the year on the coin is also the year that my wife and were born. I guess that tells everyone that we're youngins!
