  1. Posting the coordinates doesn't necessarily mean that someone isn't going to read the cache page. But simply that they have an abbreviated list of caches in the area to carry along with them. It's a lot easier to make a short note on the sheet for those caches requiring instructions. However, every cache requires coordinates. The main problem is the cost and waste of printing dozens of cache pages. Even using the print friendly version and average cache page is 2-3 pages. That's a lot of paper to tote around and a waste of our trees. Perhaps there is another solution? Such as a print friendly version of the search results page. Really, how much information is necessary? Cache name, coordinates and somestimes instructions.
  2. Often when I'm going to be in an area I'll do a zip code search before I head out and print a list of the 25 or 50 closest. It sure would be nice to have the coordinates in the cache description of the search page.
  3. City View Of Burkburnett cache here in Texas has been a huge success in getting the quilt squares out and signed! I've had people travel as far away as Dallas (2+hours) to pick them up. To my knowledge there is only 1 square left... I'll give it a few more weeks and hope it goes home with someone to be mailed in. I personally like the idea of drawing names from a hat to win the GeoQuilt...I'd love a chance at winning it. It would be a real treasure among some of my own quilts and heirloom quilts that I have. Really looking forward to seeing the completed quilt!

  5. I have placed quilt squares in the "City View Of Burkburnett" cache and the last report came in... ONLY 4 LEFT. Looking forward to seeing the finished quilt. Kim Jackson

  7. For those who receive the blocks and place them in caches, please post the location of the block on this thread. Will there be any in the DFW or Wichita Falls, TX area?

  9. I have contacted the Accessibility Program Manager at the USDA Forest Service and she had this to say: quote:Your group sounds great. I am also in a wheelchair, I'm a quad, and love outdoor recreation of all kinds. I would like to know about your group --could you send me information? I am sorry but there is no national listing of accessible trails on all 157 National Forests and Grasslands. The information about the most accessible trails on each National Forest is available through each National Forest. For more information about specific Forests you can go to the national website at www.fs.fed.us/recreation then click on the Forest information icon and select the specific Forest you are planning to visit. The information from the Forests vary at this time as our evaluation of trail accessibility is underway. I have also contacted the Fish and Wildlife Service who had this to say: quote:There is a disability advocacy organization which is doing nationwide trailsurveys which they plan to publicize. There may already be some information available to the public. The organization is Beneficial Designs, out of Santa Cruz, California. Their telephone number is 831-429-8447. Good luck! I have not heard back from National Parks yet, but I intend to make a second call in to them this week. If this information helps anyone, it would sure be nice if you'd post a little note to let me know that this isn't in vain.
  10. Tis the season... the weather is warming up, Geocachers are out and about... the poison ivy/oak/sumac is in bloom! Tasha and I were out last weekend and in spite of her frequent swims in the lakes and ponds, she managed to get poison ivy under her front legs. I've been packing the blisters with a baking soda paste to reduce the swelling and it seems to have comforted her a little. It's hard to come up with a cure that is safe to 'lick'. Any suggestions and tips to share with us all?
  11. I know of only 1 wheelchair accessible trail and it's near Nevada City (between Reno and Sacramento). I only know about it because I noticed when I was there. Independence Trail (California) I will note that the trail was very muddy and not accessible in it's current condition. It needed some maintenance. You would think that the National and/or State Parks would have a list or publication of these. It's something I am going to look into and if I find anything out, I will edit this post.
  12. I'm guessing some of these previous posts are overnighters? Geez that's a load! My longest hikes have been less than 5 hours. I make my pack as light as possible. Area Map Printouts for local caches Tradables Pen Personal Journal 2 trash bags (1-trash, 1-rain) AA batteries small mag light stun gun compass Bucktool rock hammer (for geology geek) camera tweezers leash Deep Woods OFF handkerchief (ever wonder where that word came from?) Lunch (sandwich, chips, orange, dog food) 2 water jugs(1-me, 1-Tasha)w/collapsible bowl Would really like to find Tasha her own pack, because I'm tried of carrying her water AND mine. Anyone know of a good saddle pack? Maybe just a doggy Platypus!

  14. I was a Geography student at SWT and was in a Field Methods course when another student in class mentioned she had heard of some sort of GPS stash game. I was instantly curious and started randomly searching the internet. I finally found the term geocaching and did a keyword search. That's when I found the website. I lerked around reading posts and new caches until February when I finally signed up, but I still didn't have a GPS and checking one out of the department as an undergrad was nearly impossible. I managed to persuade my boyfriend (later husband)that a GPS was a necessity for school. In April 2001, the eTrex Vista was released and I was the first buyer on the list! The first week of May and I took a Finals study break to find the CenTex Prime cache just outside of San Marcos. From that point on I was hooked! The next semester I was telling everyone about Geocaching and even stuck a couple notes on the Department Bulletin Board with the website. Today, I'm the primary geocacher in the family and I usually grab my dog, Tasha, bring her along on my weekday hunts.
  15. Think back as far as you can: How did you get started Geocaching? Okay, lets hear it! Tell us about your amazing discovery and your first experience to the Wonderful World of Geocaching! What's your weapon of choice and who do you usually go geocaching with?
  16. For me the answer is very straight forward. 1. If you don't want anyone to log a virtual cache without physically visiting, require them to email you with an answer that they could have only found at the location. Example. I placed a virtual cache in Dallas and within days I had several logs from those whom had not actually visited the site and complaints from others who disapproved of me allowing these logs to remain. I edited the cache and required proof of visit questions from that point forward. Dallas: "Number One"
  17. 85 degrees? Gee-wiz, Y'All! That's perfect weather! I'm living it up until we spike into the 110-120's this summer and my compass no long points laterally - it points vertically down! (on fire)

  19. As a daughter of an airline pilot... NO WAY! I've tried to visit Dad at DFW in between flights... it's a jog from one terminal to the other. When he reaches his final destination, he has less bearly 8 hours to sleep before his return flight. No single person could log all these. It's either a fake or a team. Either way, I don't care. That's why the milestone prizes aren't such a good idea unless you're a paying member. And even then... how would you REALLY know? This is a game not a competition. (Unless you're going to the Event Cache and they have games and prizes there! )

  21. I think your instincts are correct on the appropriateness of the contents. I know if I were caching with children I wouldn't want to have to explain why they can't have the lip gloss or candy. It shouldn't have been there in the first place. I think some have gotten off track a bit by thinking if they find the cache they are obligated to leave something behind, anything they have with them. "Take Something, Leave Something" I interpret that to mean, if you have something which is appropriate to trade, than please participate. Otherwise, please only sign the logbook. Lighters need to be removed immediately. They are potential bombs heating up in these cache boxes through the heat of summer. Have you considered contacting the owner of the cache's to let them know about the contents?

  23. I don't suppose there is a way to search for a specific type of cache near you? I'd like to be able to do a search for the closest caches in my area and select ONLY traditional cache or ONLY webcam cache, etc....
  24. Bump Up.... I've really enjoyed everyone's Dog-Tales.
