  1. I'm pretty much in the same boat as Curioddity, thinking about the Pre (although for me it would be in January). I'm also keeping a close eye on the upcoming HTC Hero (Android OS). The main things I use on my current Centro are Datebk6 (advance calendar), Chatter (email w/ push IMAP) and Cachemate (Geocaching database) Once the Hero is out, I'll be looking for all the comparisons between the phones and the programs available for them.
  2. Are these still in production or for sale anywhere? All I could find was some on eBay at some higher prices. I'm Deaf myself, and had a Deaf summer hire at my work this past summer. He got the Geocaching bug from me, and now caches himself, wanted to pick up the coin as a "going away" gift.
  3. Whoo hoo! (plus I need those stickers I ordered as well)
  4. I was doing a Google search for something, and one hit was in the forums. But now when I go to the forums, and click on a topic, it shows the first post in the topic, then a list of all the topics (first sentence) of all the replies, I have to click on each of them to open them up to read. I can't find a way yet to undo this... I'm not sure what I did, or how I did it, but I'd definitely like to UNDO it! Thanks for any help! Nighthawk700
  5. Great, thanks! I should have searched more, but tossed up a quick note while I thought of it at work.
  6. Usually, there's a pen in the box. How do you sign "GROAN"? Two hands outstretched like you're grasping someones throat choking them. Or pantomime vomiting...
  7. Lately my wife and I have been talking about how to sign "Geocaching" when we are talking about a hunt. We've done it two different ways. Either just signing the letters "G-C", or I mimic holding my GPS and sweeping it around, as if looking for the cache. Just wondering what others do. BTW: Any type of organized deaf Geocaching group out there? Nighthawk700
  8. Knowing her, the "buy and return" wouldn't be something she'd do anyway, except maybe one to see if she wanted it. And I'm not aware of any Boy Scout camps in the area. (do Boy Scouts do Geocaching? I did orienteering in the scouts... 25 years ago!) I'll check our local REI and similar type stores. Even if they don't rent, maybe they'll know of someone who does. Thanks.
  9. I took a family (my neighbors) out Geocaching this past Sunday for their first time. They were very excited, and the mother asked about renting about 10 GPS receivers, hiding some goodies, and having kids hunt for them for her son's birthday party/event. (goodies would be things like party favors) I can't think of any place to rent, let alone in quantities like that, but figured someone here might know. I'm not sure if this is the best part of the forum to put the topic. If there is a better part, please let me know. Thanks! Nighthawk700
  10. You may want to put the TX on some Palm sites. There are several people who love them and stockpile them for when their current one fails.
  11. Thanks! I just got back into Geocaching, now with my kids. My old Garmins aren't working III+ & V) I wanted something simple and cheap for them, and this fit the bill nicely. Of course they each want their own, but that's not happening. I was really surprised that the "Send to GPS" works with this, I thought it would only be the more advance models! Got a PN-40 for myself though. :-)
  12. Okay, I found the problem. It wasn't related to MapSource. Turns out the driver I installed for the USB->Serial converter somehow fizzed. When I uninstalled it, then reinstalled, everything worked fine agian. I'll have to keep an eye on that and see if ti becomes a problem again. Thanks anyway folks.
  13. I copied Mapsource onto my laptop (still have it on my computer, but I'm tired of waiting for my wife to finish with e-mail or games). I was able to get it working and download information to my Garmin V (using a USB -> Serial converter). However, I hooked up my old III+ and Mapsource never "found" it. I did the unlock code for the software that came with my Garmin V, but couldn't find the CD that came with the III+. Do I need to install that as well to get it working? Actually, I don't think I even tried downloading anything to it in a long time with my computer either, I'll give that a try tonight. (My in-laws are coming, so that should keep my wife busy ) Any other suggestions on things I should try? I mostly use the Mapsource with GSAK, putting all the caches of interest into Mapsource, then downloading into the GPS.
  14. I've read on some GPS forums that Garmin will supply the Mapsource if you call them (tech support I guess) and tell them you want it. So you can do your route planning on your computer. I was all set to buy the Quest 2 when the announcement about the 2730 came out. I've been thinking about getting XM for a while, so I caved in.
  15. My first motorcycle was a 1984 Honda Nighthawk 700 SC. Even though I moved on to a Kawasaki Concours, and dream about a Goldwing, I've kept the Nighthawk700 name. (Some people ask me if it's a Dungons and Dragons thing. Never got into that stuff). I thought of using my nickname, "The Admiral" but didn't. When I go to group rides, I like checking out everyone's bike, seeing what type of modifications they made, how many miles, they have, etc. My friend commented that I looked like an admiral looking over the fleet.
  16. Thanks, I feel better now. Just put in my order for the 2730. Will use the V for Geocaching once I'm parked, and the III+ is for when my 2 year old is a little older, so I can infect her with the fever.
  17. Okay, so how normal (or obsessed, or...) is this? I currently use a Garmin V. I've been thinking of upgrading for a while now since I hate constantly having to reload maps between home (VA), my folks (CT) and the wife's folks (NY) when we travel. So I was thinking of getting the Quest 2, with all the basemaps built in, and still hand holdable for geocaching. But I just saw the new specs on the Garmin 2730... wow, weather, traffic, XM Radio. So now I'm thinking of getting that, then switching over the the V whenever I'm up for a cache. Is this something that others do? Or is that getting into overload? (I even had someone offer to by my old III+ which I recently took out of mothballs)
  18. Since I was asked to keep you posted: I loaded up batteries in the III+, and then left it plugged in overnight. Then I checked the Garmin website and saw I was a few versions behind in software (I think .04, when the most recent was .06) so I upgraded the software. That apparently wiped out my current location, I had to use the set location again, so I figured I'd wait one more day before testing. I was using the GPS while driving and all. (Realized that I like the features in the V better than the III+ except I love that the III+ will tell you the voltage, I used that in the past to monitor problems on my motorcycle). Anyway, I then took the batteries out of the GPS and let it sit without any power for 24 hours. Then I put the batteries back in. It had saved everything, the track, current settings, last location, etc. So I guess I just needed to charge the interal battery up a bit. My friend said she doesn't want to try Geocaching until the springtime (will be doing it with her 4 year old) so I'll just hook the GPS up to power every now and then to keep the internal battery charged up.
  19. I saw that option, but I'm using an IMAP account. So much better than POP (except in this case I guess. ) Hmmm, must have gotten picky on case sensitivity. I know it was working before, but now it started working when I changed Nighthawk700 to nighthawk700. Heck, as long as it works. Thanks!! Now if I can get away long enough to do a cache again...
  20. I had a similar problem early on that required me to save the zip file first. I have a hunch that it was an update that 'fixed it'. But I also noted a difference in operation in HOW you try to load the file. First, I use MS Outlook for my mail - and XP. Now, I used to OPEN the e-mail but it would not open GSA when I tried to load the file (hence the save operation) . But I found that if I just click the Paper Clip icon on the right and double click the pop up for the zip it worked just fine. But now I find that it works OK when I open the e-mail too - this is why I think it may have been a new version that made that work for me. My point here is that your problem MAY be in just how you are trying to load it. What is your mail program? What about your Windows updates? Are they recent? Are you using SP1 or SP2? Could be a lot of different things going on here but I don't think it is your settings in GSAK. I don't try to drag and drop - I just double click the zip file. I am using Windows XP SP2, Mozilla Thunderbird for email, and GSAK 6.02 . So I should have installed all the latest updates. It must be a setting somewhere ! I wonder if Thunderbird is causing the problems. I found your message (admittedly a little bit old) because I'm having this very problem. When I drag the Zip file over to the GSAK icon, and tell it to import, I get "There are no matching files to load. Import aborted." But if I save to disk, then drag on, it works. I tried opening the zip, then dragging the gpx file, but got a different warning message about how XP doesn't do that well. I can stick with save then drag, although that's an extra couple of steps (save, open up the file manager, find the file, then drag). Another issue I had, not sure if it's related to this, it didn't seem to recognize my "found" caches. I just uploaded to the recent GSAK, I haven't been caching in a while due to a newborn occupying a lot of time (gotta have some priorities ) I'm pretty sure that before it did recognize the found caches.
  21. My wife and I took an Alaskan cruise last year. One stop was Sitka. The local cache hider had 4 caches designed for people on cruise ships. We did one near the raptor rescue, then went on the tour. Not only was the "paid excursion" from our ship there, (about twice the price, although they did get a van and we walked) the sign language interpreter for the other two deaf folks was with them interpreting, so we joined up with them (my wife and I are hard of hearing). Worked out great.
  22. Thanks. I have it plugged in to an outlet now, and I'll leave it for a day or so. By that point I'll be able to judge better how it's doing at holding a charge.
  23. A friend of mine is interested in trying Geocaching. I dug out my old III+ which I had left on a dresser about 3 years ago when I got my GPS V, and it was still sitting there (AAs were removed). I fired it up, and it's saying the internal lithium battery is dead. Doesn't surprise me I guess. Is the only way to replace this to send it in to Garmin and pay the $125? Hardly seems worth it just to replace a battery. Are there other ways of changing this? Any suggestions would be welcome! I did a search, but either there isn't anything on this yet, or I'm using the wrong terms. :-) If I leave batteries in it (or leave it hooked up to a power source) could that charge the lithium battery back up? Thanks
  24. Here's the article in the Washington Post. Looks like they checked most of their facts. I didn't see anything glaringly wrong. Washington Post Article As mentioned before, you may be asked to register. If you don't want to, go to the site mentioned above and use the account given there. For people who get the dead tree copy, is there more in the newspaper itself? (Pictures, infoboxes, etc.?) I wouldn't mind picking up a copy if there is more than just the article and the one picture in it.
