  1. Thanks. There seems to be some life left in it as I can hear very faint beeps coming from it when I try to power it on. I got a can of compressed dry air that I'll try and use to completely blow any remaining moisture. This wasn't exposed to salt water so shouldn't need extensive cleaning. If worse comes to worse I'll send it back for repair or just buy something new and waterproof. Thanks again.
  2. I got caught in a hellacious rain today while caching. My ST Map got pretty wet but continued to work OK. Yes, mine does have the hairline cracks where the screws are and I'm sure some moisture got into the unit because the display window fogged up very slightly on the inside. After the rain I continued to use it for a while, worked OK. After I got home I tried to turn it on but it won't power up at all. I replaced batteries, nada. I tried using the external power cable, nada. I took it apart to see if there is any water inside, nada. Now I seem to remember there was a way to get this to power on by a combination of button presses but maybe I'm wrong. After hearing horror stories about Magellan's poor technical service I hate to send it in for repair but might have to. Any ideas before I resort to the drastic? Thanks.
  3. Most of my getting around during the summer is by bicycle, even before the price of gas went stupid! I drive maybe 30 miles a week, if that so it shouldn't affect me much, but I'm still pretty upset that the gas keeps going up with no end in sight. It just went up to $2.45 here today in Indiana for regular unleaded. I do most of my caching combined with biking trips, or I'll hunt one only if I'm going to be in the area. Last weekend I biked 38 miles round trip to find just one cache. It was a beautiful day and I enjoyed both the ride and the find.
  4. The cache: Carr Lake. This was just another, as some would say, "lame little micro" but I enjoyed it and it turned out to be one of my more memorable finds. It took me to a place I never knew existed and I have a lasting impression to this day of the beauty of the area.
  5. I posted this a while back::: All the caches 'round here are the same. Every one of them is just so lame. Now I don't mean to nag, But I hate the cheap swag. So I just might get out of the game!
  6. This one seems to be quite dangerous as it has directions to the nearest hospital on its web page. I can't wait to do this one someday!
  7. I went to a coin show last weekend and found some 100 year old British coins very cheap (5/$1.00) and am going to put these in many of my upcoming finds. They're not worth much but they are very cool.
  8. Even though it is explicitly expressed in the disclaimer, i.e. Cache seekers assume all risks involved in seeking a cache, and I think most cachers are aware of this, can someone, either this hider of a cache, or Groundspeak be sued if someone get hurt, or worse, while going for a cache? I'd be interested to know from a lawyer's point of view if the disclaimer is enough to protect someone from getting sued. Not that I'm planning on suing
  9. In two weeks I'll be leaving on my annual trip to West Texas. I've made this trip 16 times but this will be my first time as a geocacher. Driving one way 1600 miles alone is extremely boring but this year I'm going to cache along the route. I have approximately 75 caches to hunt on the trip, including a Project A.P.E. cache, a Letterbox, I'll add another state where I've found caches, and I'll be away from my everyday life for two weeks doing something other than working. Can't wait to leave!!!
  10. Thanks for adding these. I know my highest 8182 ft. at GCGJFW From NM to OK As the Crow Flies. Don't know my lowest elevation. edit: double typed two words corrected highest point.
  11. This topic is of no earthshattering importance, and may not even be related to geocaching, but it is similar to another recent topic and IS about using a GPS. Besides, it's a slow day here and I wanted to start a topic. A recent thread asked what your odometer reading is. But has anyone kept track of the farthest north, south, east or west they have been WITH THEIR GPS? I haven't seen this discussed yet so thought I would bring it up just for fun. If it has been discussed before then I apologize. For me: North -- N 41° 45.918 East -- W 85° 49.378 South -- N 30° 35.326 West -- W 104° 01.369
  12. Some stations in town are at $2.09 while others are at $2.25. I have about 50 unfound caches within 20 miles of my house and ALL will be done by combining my caching trips with biking trips this year. I do have a 1600 mile, one-way, trip to Texas in April that I plan to do some caching on, but these are all the caches I plan to do while driving. Next year, when gas is over $3.00 I doubt if I will do any caching by driving.
  13. Unless the page gives parking coordinates, it's usually pretty obvious to me where to park. But I do appreciate when this information is provided.
  14. If signing the log is required to count as a find then what happens if the logbook disappears? Do all those finds now become null and void. Personally, I started using stickers because trying to write something while standing in the middle of the woods swatting at the gazillions of mosquitos devouring me with nothing firm or flat to write on while trying to come up with something profound to write is too much work. I usually take a few stickers with me with the date already filled out. Also, there have been many caches that I have found that were micros without a pen or pencil (of course I ALWAYS forget to bring one). However if its a micro log I can quickly jot down my name and be done with it. I usually try to write up a nice account of my visit to the cache on the cache's web page. Stickers, I vote yeah!
  15. PDOP's, GPSVIXEN, and BradGrier. Thanks for the offers of help. Me and GPSVIXEN got in contact with each other earlier today and she's offered to help. Keep warm up there. -41 Windchill! Brrrr. Well, it's not that nice down here in Indiana either. Still too much snow for good caching. Take care. KB9BIT
  16. Would any friendly Edmonton, Alberta cacher like to help me with Where's in a Name? I've come up with an ideal spot at N53 32.480 W113 30.500 which is near an existing cache, Windchill -41 Cache at N53 32.370, W113 30.413. My handle, KB9BIT, converts to the latitude 53 32.480. Plotting this on a map puts my chosen location very near the intersection of 109 St. NW and Jasper Ave NW. All I need is a picture of the spot with a picture of your GPSr showing these coords. Also, any information about what's located at these coordinates would be nice to add to the logging. The nice thing about helping me with this is that you also get to log this as a find. Thanks and good caching. KB9BIT email mrtsp91@netscape.com edit to correct typo.
  17. I've done one that was "hidden" on very private property (i.e. someone's front yard) and will not do one like this again. Although I will do them eventually, I like to avoid any that are hidden in high-muggle places where I will draw attention to myself. The last thing I want is to be stopped and questioned by the police. I prefer those out in the country, or the woods, or somewhere where I can spend time alone looking without raising suspicions. I also like hunting while traveling in other states.
  18. Since June 2004 Hmmmmm. My map showed up here last night???? Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico. Upcoming: Texas, Alaska
  19. A somewhat infamous cache in my area, this one , was recently moved to a new location, by my calculations, 1.37 miles further west. I'm just wondering, if this was your cache, would you have archived the old one and relisted this as a completely new cache? Not a big deal, since I can log it again as a new find, but it is a completely new container, new size (was a regular tupperware box now an altoids tin), and is at a completely new location 1.37 miles away. I concede that this is not my cache and the owner can do as he pleases but just wondering if there is any rule regarding moving a cache this far. Again, not a big deal.
  20. For what it's worth I heard a report just tonight that some "experts" think we can possibly see gas hitting that $5/gallon mark here in the US within the next few years. If this happens, for me, driving will become a luxury, and caching, if I do it at all, will be done by biking or walking. As much as I enjoy finding Tupperware in the woods, I could not justify spending $5/gallon for a hobby (unless I can get 10 caches/gallon)
  21. Not sure if this is what the topic is about, but I can clearly state that the one thing that will influence my geocaching style is the price of gas getting ready to shoot through the stratosphere. I can see most of my caching this spring, summer, etc. taking place by combining it with biking trips or if I plan on being in the area where there are caches I have not found. I don't see me jumping in the car and driving 50+ miles roundtrip to find a cache. Some "experts" are predicting an average of $2.50/gallon this summer, ouch! I speak for me alone but I can't justify spending $50 for a tank of gas to go tupperware hunting. It will much more enjoyable for me to do it by bicycle. But that's just my opinion.

    Maps

Check out GetaGPS.com. I got the MapSend Topo for my SportTrack Map for about $50 or so plus I got a $20 rebate on top of that. And they ship very fast. Only thing is shipping is kinda steep, ~$8 if I remember correctly.
  23. A GPSr is a gadget, and I like gadgets, so I bought one with no real clue what to do with it. I thought it would come in handy while traveling, or biking, etc. Saw this strange word "geocaching" in the owner's manual and thought "what the heck does that mean?" Googled it, and it brought me to this web site. After figuring out what this was about, and seeing that there was a cache hidden only .2 miles away from where I work, I set out at lunchtime to find it. As it turns out it was a crappy lamppost micro, but I thought it was really clever, and was instantly hooked. That's my story and I'm ..........
