  1. Maybe replicas should only be allowed in micro caches. Little "Waypoints of hate and torture" all-in-one!
  2. <dupe post - haven't done THAT in awhile>
  3. Calgary, Alberta. Rocky Mountains to the west (Banff, Kananaskis, Waterton to the south) Dinosaurs to the east Prairie all around Cheap hotels Expensive hotels Cheap food Expensive food Camping Parks Caches Good public transportation Safe, clean, friendly Plenty of shopping, sites, attractions Extensive park and pathway system International Airport w/good connections to Dallas, Toronto, Minneapolis, and several other hubs
  4. Instead of correcting OTHER peoples' grammar, think about correcting YOUR ethics.
  5. 1) I think it is lame for people to attempt to "control" others. I do not play by the "rules" of Travel Bug graveyards, 1-1 trades, etc, etc. If I see a TB I will generally move it. Regardless of whether I think it's cool, cute or even relevant. It's respectful of others to move it. 2) Paper coins do not bother me. I will not move them because I only want icons from real coins I have seen or touched. However, the tracking number was paid for. If someone wishes to use their paid for tracking number on something else - so be it. There is ONE danger that has been mentioned years ago, but bears repeating. The "swap" of a real coin for a paper coin. If paper coins become "acceptable" in the game, then it will allow coin thieves to take a real coin, make a paper copy, place the copy in a cache, and have it travel a few more times before the owner may even be aware that the swap was made. 3) My comments on the paper coin graveyard are such that I will be banned from the forums for at least 2 days if I express them.

  7. I don't own very many coins but I have 5 or 6 of the ones on that page. I think this page was pretty much up-to-date on all the coins available - up until the tidal wave hit! The ones you see there are probably at least within the first 200 or so editions of geocoins ever made.
  8. Physical harm vs. mental harm vs harm to Groundspeak's image Slice and dice at will. Physical harm is easy to understand. I razor blade coin that is sharp - bad idea. Mental harm is hard to define. When someone calls me a "boob" I don't care. Sure. Maybe I *could* stand to lose a few pounds, but I'm tough ... I can....I can.... handle it.... Harm to Geocaching/Groundspeak's image - that's really for them to decide, isn't it? It seems to me that the real conversation here is more about what does/does not cause mental harm to others: racism, sexism, patriotism, anti-war, pro-war (or pro-freedom if you are pro-war, I'm more of a peacenik myself), sexual images, images of violence, images of potential violence, cats, dogs, and birds. Personally, I really hate monkeys! (I like apes, but hate monkeys) We need to see where the boundries are. Too "Politically Correct" and we lose flavour and variety. Too "open" an we lack standards and stand for nothing.
  9. Apparently, I cannot lock it. It is indeed the Imagine coin - so This thread is redundant. I sure do love the coin though!
  10. I'll lock this thread - the other one seems to be the "thank-you" thread.
  11. Yes! That's the one. I'm all about peace, so it was a nice surprize!
  12. I've been away from coins (and caching too ) for awhile, but the other day I recieved an envelop marked with my caching handle. Inside was a very lovely coin, but even better was the sentiment inside: Peace So to my mysterious benfactor - peace to you too.
  13. Freedom gives you the right to do what you want. Probably not. What if I want to run people over with my car? How about: Freedom gives you the right to do what you want as long as you do no harm to others. If we agree that this is valid, then we *should* have no problem with any geocoin out there. As folks have stated, if you don't like it then you don't have to buy it. but.... What constitutes "harming" another? Can an image, an innuendo, or statement "harm" another? Well....that's why there's this thing called the legal system out there! I understand it employs a few folks too. Which of the following "freedoms" cause harm (rhetorical - intended to make us think, don't answer) Free to be topless in public Free to burn the flag Free to sleep on public property Free to sell pictures of naked people Free to preach religion in public (Christian and/or Pagan) Free to play rock and roll, dungeons and dragons, video games Free to read books Do any of the above "harm" others? Every one of them has caused controversy at some point and many still do. (I stayed away from the obvious constitutional ones One of the only times I got "slapped" by a moderator here at Groundspeak relates to my negative feelings on a certain "constitutional right" south of the border that I really don't like.... So! back to standards for geocoins. Ultimately, it is Groundspeak that decides with designs pose a threat to the image of their "brand" and the family-friendly stance they seek to encourage. Some coin designs just clearly cross the line, some don't and some are more ... "sneaky" As a company - they can do what they want with their "product" and we, as consumers have the freedom to decide if we wish to partake. In terms of "the coin that shall not be named" - I personally think Groundspeak was pwned - just my opinion though. They did catch and change some of it. As a community, we "breed what we tolerate" - so if this coin offends enough people, then that opinion should at least be expressed. Also, we should share information on coins to avoid etc. As an example, some will seek the "Coins of God" and some will run the other way. I'm not religious myself, but the Christian coins don't offend me in the slightest. Back to Groundspeak - it would be nice if they were a little clearer in stating what they approve, but they are smart not to. Once "written" in stone, it becomes something that can be used as a crutch for bad behaviour: "The rules don't SAY I can't have a coin with me picking my nose and peeing on a tree .. you HAVE to approve it...."
  14. Here's a "blast from the past" Any of the coins on THIS page are probably worth trying to find and worth money. http://www.geocities.com/team_fisur/geocoins/index.html
  15. Oh yes - that's a hot topic as well! Imagine if two young gay folk met while caching, minted a coin to celebrate their marriage and set it out as a trackable for their honeymoon? Maybe even "cache it up" by using a slogan like "The hidden treasure I found was holding his own GPS" Wouldn't bother me in the least as it celebrates something I consider positive in their lives (not my cup of tea, but doesn't bother me at all). Would that coin be approved? I'll go with the honest answer "I don't know"
  16. I'm not so sure that the concept of "freedom" excludes the ability to have ethical boundaries. Of course, those boundaries will differ from person to person. In my case, violence, gratuitous sexual content (especially content that objectifies women and de-humanizes them) and themes of racism/hate all are categories that I will lend my voice to fight against. After all "If you don't stand for something, then you don't stand for nothing at all". That stated. There are different opinions on where the line gets drawn. For example, is a gun a symbol of violence or a symbol of freedom (do NOT answer that!!!! it's rhetorical and could get us WAY off topic). Racism is probably the easiest to agree upon in terms of boundaries. I read some comics from the 30's/40's and the portrayal of other cultures is biased and would be considered questionable today. Violence is more difficult. I enjoy the game Grand Theft Auto. It's rated such that I know it is adult, but it can certainly be violent. Does it cross the line? (rhetorical again). Sex....ah sex....THAT's the hardest one of all to get agreement on. The suggestion of a bare breast, to the images of man/sheep love. There are so many variations/tastes/thoughts and so on. Your own personal view is guaranteed to make you a prude to half the crowd and a pervert to the other half (depending on just how wacky you are, of course!) That is where we then look at this as a GAME and ask where the above fit in or get banned (because, to be sure, these themes exist in our lives and will creep into activities we share together). I guess the morality of Groundspeak wins. It's their site and, to some extent, their "playing field". Generally, I trust them enough to be "good" - in my own loose definition of the word. Sometimes I disagree with their take on things (there are some coins that really *do* seem to push an agenda - whether that agenda is American patriotism, western religion, or even sexual innuendo. Intention counts. So I wonder if they always have intent and/or foresight in all cases.
  17. Well. I've dealt with a few coin makers and the bottom line is honesty and good business ethics. Never had a problem.
  18. Can't resist. I think there are various ethical foundations. Global, National, Regional and Personal. When Groundspeak chooses to approve/deny a coin, they are likely doing so based upon their own life experiences and feelings of right/wrong. What these are is anyone's guess and probably in conflict with at least some of each other persons moral world view. As a global business with a definate American (US) bias, the company is likely to be pretty much at a national morality level. So things like guns, knives, and other associated "freedoms" of the US constitution are likely to get approval. Whereas in other parts of the world we may be wondering "what were they thinking?". In the end, I think that the filter at the Groundspeak level has to be pretty "wide" on what gets accepted. It then needs to be re-filtered based upon your own personal foundation (buy/not buy share/hide and so on). So coins with an obvious agenda, specific imagry and such will most likely get denied. Those that are subtle (or even pretty non-subtle) will likely get approved if there is any subjective "wiggle" room as to "does it or doesn't it". Hence, we will get coins such as the "coin that shall not be named" - because it isn't "obvious" enough not to get approved. This "coin that shall not be named" was *almost* obvious enough, but some changes were made from what I understood.
  19. Yes....bury ze vord deeeeeep into ze physcie so zat it can mifest itself in ze forum moderation activities....deeeeep in ze phychie....
  20. Or you could just do what everyone else does and mint some more. You mean.....like a version 2 or something? I actually *did* mint coins in 2006 and agin in 2007 - different designs. They were round and very simple. Don't know *what* I'll do for 2008 though
  21. Thanks! - wait until you see my Freud coin. Lot's of trees, caves, a train going through a tunnel! For what it's worth - I totally see this coin for what I see it as what I think I see it as! I also wonder just how it got approved. I mean ONE element I can see - but this one is an entire sexual cocktail of innuendo!!! (no pun intended)
  22. It is interesting to see how much a sexual theme gets everyone sharing opinions! Too bad the OP had nothing to do with the actual design of the coin, but simply offered one way the design could be interpreted and asked what the approval process was. Personally, I "got" it. I saw the potential innuendo. This was re-enforced by the icon. If you didn't and, I therefore have a dirty mind -- well... I don't like the color of your socks! SO! If we put aside whether the coins does or does not represent a sexual subcontext. If we put aside that this coin is pretty or ugly. Heck - let's even toss aside the question as to whether this coins does/does not should/should not cross the "line" of good taste. We distill the thread back to the original question. What makes the "cut" when it comes to approval? What is the line that cannot be crossed? Themes of violence, themes of sexuality, themes of.... It is interesting that just mentioning that you see a vagina in this coin gets you labelled as "having your mind in the gutter" or that you are somehow "wrong" for seeing something. Personally, the shape of the artwork + the cherry + the "first time" phrase is a pretty strong indication that there is some sexual energy in this coin! Who knows....maaaaybe ze sexual energi iz deep vithin ze subconcience of ze caching community. Ze desie to seek ze return to ze woom od ze earth muzzer as represented by ze tupperwear container of treats.... or not. Question remains. How did this get approved? Secondly, is it appropriate?
  23. While I doubt my kids would see what many see in this coin, I see nothing in it. Oh - I see the vagina, but I see nothing of any interest in this coin. It's over-designed, set-up to be interpreted with innuendo. Sorry. It's too much of a match between, "first time, always remember your first time, cherry icon, non-round (vagina-ish) design....etc. Maybe the joke was on the person that hired the designer, maybe it was intentional, maybe it was accidental. That said, I suspect the only time I'll ever see this coin is here in these forums. Most will be tucked away in collections and brought out with a little chuckle at events (c'mon - you just KNOW that's gonna happen). Hopefully folks have the good sense to not show them (and explain them) to kids. As for Groundspeak approving it? - I suspect they didn't do so knowingly. They saw the cherry icon and caught that reference (shot it down), but probably missed the possible innuendo. It would serve no purpose to have them accept it, as their rejection wouldn't have stopped a coin getting made - just modified. This coin really is so busy it doesn't seem very "clear" what the heck is going on in it!
