  1. The bulk of the coins are going into caches I visit - so you can follow me around and get them for free too! - except that I often wait months before logging my finds :) and sometimes don't ever log them.

I hope you will do some caching in our beautiful province of Quebec. We have a lot of nice caches.

Please pay us a visit one day :D

I make it to Montreal every so often, to Quebec City - not often enough! Once...a long time ago, I did a road-trip to the North of Quebec - Rimouski - it was very beautiful. (delicious sugar pies!)

  2. In terms of my thought process (and my intention with my latest coin).

    1) I activate mine

    2) You activate yours

    3) I give you one of mine when we meet face-to-face

    4) You give me one of yours when we meet face-to-face

    5) We each enjoy having the coins in our collection - no adoption etc.

I actually prefer others to activate their coins (when they are trackable), prior to trading with me. To each their own though. I'm just posing the question here on folks preferences/ideas.

I suppose one benefit/detriment (depending on viewpoint), is that activated coins in someone else's name are much less "commercial" - at least to my way of seeing it. They are less likely to be traded for by someone planning on reselling them.

  3. I just ordered one.

There was no notice that I could find that said how many were left.

If you need me to release one in NC or VA or possibly MD, please let me know.

    Thanks!

No problemo! I think there are about 11-15 left of the ones I am selling. I never did get around to changing the webpage to remove the link, so I'll just leave it for now and let them go if anyone wants one and thinks they'll never meet me face-to-face.

  4. Opps. I also like "historical" coins (the first 1000 geocoins) and some of the coins from "forum friends". As one example, I've never met Mr. Yemony-Limony, or that gal from Atlanta, the biker of moun10's, or other folks and blokes....but they've made me laugh and cry in the forums (sometimes at the same time) - so their personal coins hold a lot of meaning for me.

  5. In order to be an "official" geocoin, it must be in my collection. So, please ensure that you send one to me whenever you create one - especially if you want it to be "official"

    More to the topic though.

I personally (and I *do* mean personally) only collect coins made by a cacher as a personal coin (name on coin) or by an organization related to caching. I far prefer face-to-face trades - as this mean I actually met the cacher, and I also don't like coins that are never intended to really be in a cache, but are created for the sole purpose of commercial sales and collecting.

    That's just me.

As for what makes a proper "geocoin"? That's up in the air. To each their own. Personally, even if the Santa in the coin that started (re-started) this discussion has a GPS and an Ammo can - I still wouldn't want one in my collection. Unless I actually met Santa..... which would be cool.... except I've been known to be a little naughty - so maybe I should avoid him....

I've always found the geocoin craze to be a little odd - which is why I probably haven't been too active around geocoins since 2006 or so. It's a catch-22. On the one hand - I hope that there is so much coin-saturation that they lose their appeal and become a cache item rather than an object of desire. On the other hand, the subject matter in many coins seems truly odd. However, that's just me. I've seem wonderful coins that don't seem to be geo-related (Tiki's, Greenman, and more) and I've seen coins I hate that have ammo cans on them (names withheld - if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it....)

In the end. (whew!) - I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For me - that means personals, face-to-face, and *some* geo-organizations.

  6. Forgive me if this has been asked - I've been away for awhile, so maybe some of the folks that have been consistently active here can answer this one.

Are goeocoins still as popular as ever, or is their popularity starting to fade?

The reason I ask is that I think from my brief observation that things are "settling" down (which I think is a good thing), and geocoins may actually be moving from something that people steal towards just another part of the geocaching "landscape".

Has their popularity reached the point where they now get better travel mileage?

  7. Well, I wouldn't mind if a coin I trade for is activated (if it has got an individual story with many logs it would be even more special for me), but I would like to adopt such coins. As long as someone else is the registered owner of the coin, it's not mine...

    Yipes!

I don't think you should trade for coins that have been activated for travelling. When I say activated, I mean activated and owned by the person that you are trading with.

  8. Here's a question for discussion.

I've just done my new personal coin and plan to activate about 80% of them under my own name. I'm going to do the "traditional" mission of move it, keep it, etc - and place many into caches as I travel around.

That said, I also plan to do some face-to-face only trading as a cool way of getting coins from cachers I meet.

    So....what's the question?

If you are trading your personal, trackable coin for another cacher's personal trackable coin - do you want it activated?

I've been thinking that I actually prefer it when another cacher activates their coin and set's their mission as "Traded with Lemon Fresh Dog". It shows as "their" coin, but I get to keep it as I traded for it.

Would it bother you if someone traded you for their coin and it was activated?

(obviously, I'm not for trading someone's coin that is activated for travel!)

  9. Woo! I'm pretty excited! It looks like they have made it to the coast and I'll be getting these in-hand in a short while.

I haven't seen the final product yet, but will post a photo as soon as I can. I'll start printing labels and getting the padded envelopes ready for those of you that grabbed 1 or 2 from the ones I allocated.

Now... I have to activate all the rest!

There are about a dozen left from the 98 that I am selling to "those I can't meet face-to-face". I really hope that I'll meet some folks and get some face to face trades - so if you're planning a trip to Calgary anytime, make sure to PM me and let me know.

  10. There are MANY geocoins that could be in serious copyright trouble :P

It's a good idea to ask the question beforehand. Anyone that used Disney characters for example is asking to be sued. It's only a matter of time before someone gets "caught"

  11. I'm not sure if I posted before, but I was fortunate enough to receive one of these coins this summer.

Thank you to the creator and the gifter.

I certainly share the sentiments of John Lennon's words and, as his immortal words say - I'm not the only one.

    Thank you.

  12. I mailed out my very first coin (the first Geobone) in regular envelopes for trading.

I am sure that I did some serious damage to some automated postal sorting machines! Ouch! These coins are HEAVY - so having them move through rollers obviously caused jams, overflows, and line shut downs. I basically was a one-man disruption to the postal system!

Most made it but: Some arrived in smashed envelopes, some came back, some are on Post Office sorting center floors.

The best one was the one that was separated from the envelope and must have hit the floor. Someone at the post office found it, looked up the geocaching.com website (it's on the coin), sent it to Groundspeak! Awhile later, I got a message from Groundspeak saying they received it and asked if they could have it for their display case! In a funny twist - I'd already set one aside for them as a gift - so it saved me having to mail one out.

Otherwise, I have no flaws at all. :D

  13. I've found the reviewers can bend the "rule" if you provide explanations (and a topographical map).

For example, I have two caches that are too close in "theory" - however, you would need to bring serious rock climbing gear or die to move from one to another in a straight line.

The cache was originally not approved, and I sent a link to a topo map that I posted on a website which showed the serious cliff between them. I highlighted my routes and suggested routes and they saw clear to approve it.

  14. Opps.

I *think* or at least *thought* that I was really only annoyed with caches that are marked as TRADITIONAL requiring logging requirements. At least that's what I wrote here. How did you think that I had a problem with puzzle caches? Unless I wrote something odd.

Puzzles caches should be.... puzzles (I don't care if it's on-site (like a code, etc), or puzzle to move me to another set of coords). I just want to know ahead of time.

Mysteries should be.... well... mysterious? I don't know. Is dressing as a woman to log a find mysterious? It's certainly mysterious as to why anyone would place such a cache, but live and let live I suppose. A nice soft pair of woman's panties is certainly a nice change of..... but I digress.....

Personally, I like the wording "Special Requirements" as a cache type. It would be pretty clear.

Of course, on me it's all lost as I use a Oregon 400t and have all the cache notes at hand - so I can make "in-the-field" decisions on what to hunt and what to ignore and what to pee on  <--- kidding.
