  2. We've made arrangements to attend this event, can't wait to meet you all. Shawn & Katrina Millang aka The Coasties
  3. I'd just like to thank "Smillersmiller" for running this course. While our family vacationed in Iowa during the month of January this year; we got the opportunity to share our interest in Geocaching with a number of relatives, but mainly do the short duration of our visit we didn't really get the time to provide them with an in-depth knowledge on the subject. As fortune would have it this course was scheduled within a couple of weeks of our departure, and after some nudging our relatives elected to attend this course. After which they contacted us; with a wonderful review of the course, and with plans on taking up the sport full time in the spring. Thank you for taking the time to get others interested in this wonderful past-time. The Coasties p.s. Smillersmiller sometime you'll have to swing out west here, and I can show you some real nice hills to hide some caches on Shawn & Katrina Millang aka The Coasties
  4. This weekend we began our annual cache maintenance period; going out and confirming our caches are in good conditions and hidden in the correct locations, while confirming the coordinates. We thought about and decided we'd post this challenge out to those interested in finding some caches that are a little more challenging than the normal cache-n-dash. Gold & Silver Falls Cache Elk Creek Falls To be honest these caches are not that tough really, the hardest part is actually getting to them. Good luck to all those daring enough to try these caches! 5. We exchanged our old Magellan 315 and got the SporTrak Pro for $160.00, and we're very happy with it so far. Shawn & Katrina Millang aka The Coasties
  6. I've been thinking about this very thing for a while now. On a number of occassions we've considered hiding caches in areas that would need authorization from either a government agency (BLM, local government, parks department) or a business. It would make it much easier to approach these organizations as a member of a group vice as an individual. I believe a losely organized group utilizing chapters is the way to go, thus allowing the group to grow and prosper without relying on a single individual or a core group of members to run it. Just something to think about. Shawn & Katrina Millang aka The Coasties
  7. We've been in the Des Moines area since 11 January and have had a wonderful time thus far. We've located 7 caches so far; and I must admit they're a little harder than we though they would be, mainly due to your devious hiding techniques. Our schedule at night is pretty filled, but we're free during the day time. Hope we can hookup, we really like meeting fellow geocachers. We found the following caches so far: * Postcards (1/12) * Derby (1/13) * Not Here (1/13) * Who Forted (1/14) * Eager Beaver (1/14) * Debbie's (1/14) * Water Works South (1/14) We have a travel bug with us on this trip, and we're hoping to deposit it tomorrow @ the Water Works cache rated a 3/3. We've been doing our duty on this trip introducing geocaching to our relatives, if things workout we may have another couple geocaching in the area soon Shawn & Katrina Millang aka The Coasties
  8. This one puts me in a tough spot; being born and raised in Iowa, and know living in Oregon. I've geocached in the great plains states and have also cached near my home; and to be brutally honest both have their high points and low points, but if I had to classify one area tougher to cache in I'd definately say the Northwest is tougher. Mainly due to the terrain, most caches we do you're very lucky to get more than 3 satelites due to the dense tree cover. And nothing beats those wonderful hints like "Cache is located near the base of a stump!"; know that was very helpful in a forest full of rotting stumps. In closing I'd like to say a bad day of caching still beats a good day @ work, watching tv, or even trolling the boards. The Coasties Shawn & Katrina Millang aka The Coasties
  9. Thanks for the information. I remember going fishing as a kid at Water Works Park, I heard its changed alot since then due to a flood you had back in the 90's. We're looking forward to caching in the Des Moines area. Shawn & Katrina Millang Shawn & Katrina Millang aka The Coasties

    Iowans?

I was born and raised in Des Moines, and lived there for 18+ years till I joined the service. I'm planning a trip back to Iowa in January 2003, and would like some suggestions on caches in the Des Moines metro area. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Shawn & Katrina Millang aka The Coasties
  11. The idea on the cache boxes was this: Every one would put a themed cache box together ( I guess it does have to be themed). They would wrap it up as a gift and place a christmas ornament on top. We would use these as the white elephant gifts. The rules of the white elephant game would be played like normal but the rule of the caches would be what ever cache you end up with you have to hide ( not on that day but some time before spring)and the Christmas ornament is your to keep. I thought it would be fun to go out and find a cache that you put together and all the others too. Plus it put a caching theme to the x-mas party. I hope to see alot of new faces at the party. I know I really enjoyed the last get together and all the wonderful people we met! Happy Holidays to all! The Coasties Shawn & Katrina Millang aka The Coasties
  12. The cavern is on the opposite side of the road of Bassendorff beach. It is in the woods. It has a opening that you have duck down to get through, but once you get inside you can stand up. It is deep and very dark you must have a light! It looks like a great party place for high schoolers. The Coasties
  13. We are in Coos Bay, but we were in Portland when you were on the Coast. We did stop at Family O' Foxes get together (It was alot of fun). Next time your this way look us up! Sorry we missed you :-( Katrina The Coasties root@everdark.net
