  1. I tye flies to and I think putting them in a small plastic film cannister or altoids box or some thing where the materials would not get crushed would be best. I now I have left flies and put them in hook boxes. But if you can score some of the cups that fly shops give out when you buy flies that would be great and CHEAP. Cheers
  2. The best way is to get "GPS Made Easy" it has a really good explaination and some fun stories. But in a nutshell UTM is based upon the meteric system instead of minutes and seconds so it is easier to know you need to go 10 meters east and 5 meters north. It is really good for for going short distances too. But get the book it is the easiest. cheer
  3. Geocaching is just a nother fun activeity brought to you by DOD just like the Internet. Who ever said your tax dollars are wasted. Just your time surfing the net. cheers
  4. Okay I know how to trriangulate from a map to figure where I am. though the GPS makes that a bit archaic now. But I am wondering how to use my compass with my GPSr. What I am wondering is I know the GPSr only gives a bearing in the direction of travel while the GPSr is moving, hopefully head sceury in your hand and not bouncing down a cliff. But what I what to know is how to take a bearing with the GPSr and transfer that to the compass and then you can just follow a compass heading. The other thing is a reverse triangulation where you can walk in a circle around where the cache is suppose to be and take bearings and then where they all cross should give you a more better degree of accuracy, or am I totally in the wrong park??? Ol well any help is appricated. cheers
  5. IN your opening statement you said the cache waa off by 85 feet how do you determine who was off as a GPS is NOT an exacting instruement. I have been wondering how do you determine with great precison and accuracy where a cache is located, other then on top of a benchmark??? If i place a cache and my GPSr is off by 23ft and you come along and your GPSr is off by 23ft you may get lucky and the cancel or they may add and now your about 50ft from the cache. I have just been wondering how do you get GOOD coordinates. cheers
  6. After reading the topic Pictures - Cool Cache Containers (ccc's) (Pages 1 2 3 ...4 ) I am left wondering what is the real spirit of Geocaching. Is it giving GPS coordinates and then excpecting to have some one find a cache in a fake rock in a boulder field or a 35mm film container stuffed into a log????? Maybe im to new im just happy to find the cache when it is inder a pile of stick that look out of the ordinary, though I have missed a few of them thank God for the kid. I guess going to a new site seeing a beaver dam and finding the cache inside a hollow log is okay but fake pine cones. What is the prurpose???? why not give the coordingates so off by a factor of 10????? Ol well just wondering. Maybe it a myriad of thing something for everyone, the hunt the scenery the hike maybe all or none of the above???? cheers
  7. THANKS PDOP. Sorry for the reduncy. cheers
  8. How do you carry your GPSr when you do not acctually need to look at it but still have it on so you can look at it. This last week were doing a cache and the GPSr pointed done a trail for approximatly 0.9 miles. well as the trail literally went the direction of the pointer I just put the GPSr in a pocket and walked on. A couple times it beeped and I had lost signal but let it reaquire for a few seconds and it still pointed down the trail so back in the pocket. Not sure if to use a neckstrap, dont like looking likd some techno geek which I am anyway, or put it in a pocket or holster or what. How do you carry your GPSr when you don't need to follow it but want it on????? cheers
  9. I have a IPAQ 3640 PDA, has Pocket PC Win2000. Just replaced the battery. Let me know if you will trade for the Vista or are you stuck on wanting a Palm unit. cheers
  10. Is there an easy way to do a Pocket Query for a trip we hae planned in a couple weeks from Denver CO to Capital City Utah, without haveing to know all the zip codes along the whole route? Cheer
  11. I have an Extrax Legend and was using it this weekend in a vary wide open space. I had about 8 to 10 satalites at any give time and had accuracy from 1o to 20 feet. I turned WAAS off, some one said it helped. Well here is the problem I would follow th navigation screen and follow where the arrow pointed and read off the distance well I would walk 10 feet in that direction and then stop and look at the GPS again and it would be pointing in a total differant direction and have a totally differant distance. This happened mutiple times. But the confusing thing was is why with a little change in distance would the readings change SO MUCH. I had it at one time pointing NW and distance 453 ft the next time it would point SW and say 235 ft. I would stand there holding the GPS level and wait for up to 30 sec to let it stablize but it seemed to point very irratically. Some how I finally found the general area, by the grace of GOD, and then got the same first 30 feet that way then 50 feet another way. I checked the long/lat values against the GPS values and knew I was close but the variation swings lead me to not turst the GPS very much. Maybe that is something I need to know. Well thanks for the time and if you reply thanks again. cheers
  12. Thanks was playing with the cookiejar S/W and found out haw to merge muptiple GPX files, Couldn't find it with EasyGPX but check it out now as it has a nice interface. But is there a way to download multiple GPX files at the sam time like you can the LOC files, i.e. by checkint the box in the intial query screen. Not sure if this is what Pocket Queries does or not. If so how do u use Pocket Queries I can not find out even where to get started. Sorry and thanks you all are a great help.
  13. This is a great sport/adventure. The first thing my kids ask when i get home is can we go find treasure, their idea of Geocaching LOL. Anyway how do you combine do multiple GPX file down loads. At present I can only figure out how to do a batch LOC download or download single GPX files which are in a folder and then the file. Hope this isn't to befuddling. thanks
