  1. Incase you want information on ICANN's proposed policy change: http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/arti..._cant_type.html In theory you could have several identical-looking domains for every single legitimate domain on the planet. Maybe the phishing filters in firefox/google/AVG/IE will be enough to catch them...
  2. I think I've spotted the person leaving religious tracts.
  3. The site already only shows a scaled-down thumbnail and then ONLY shows the large image if you click on them. Nothing would need to change to make that work. However, adding a set of links like "View Small (50KB) Medium (250KB) or Large (1.4 MB)" is something many sites already do and would be a great feature. If adding links off-site is common practice (it's not right now) then it would be easy for a spammer to add links to "imagehack.us" or other closely spelled websites with that contain malicious code. Preventing that isn't what this idea is about, but it is a down side of encouraging people to go off-site. ICANN is making more language character sets available and a side effect is that we are going to see lots more fake websites out there and they are going to be WAY harder to detect.
  4. Too many...for what? Me, personally? I don't look for many multis, but I'm put off if there are more then a few stages. Then again, I might go out of my way to do a really long multi just to say I did it. "do all the stages in the multi need to be 1/10 mile apart or can they be closer?" They can be within a few feet of eachother, but they all need to be at-least 1/10th of a mile from any other geocache. Each stage can be miles apart, but it's good practice to give an idea of the total distance on the cache page.
  5. Why? Isn't that what the forums are for: discussing topics people find interesting?
  6. I might check on them after the next serious rain, but there shouldn't be any major changes. Maybe check to make sure the bag for the log is in good shape and the rubber seal is clean.
  7. A blackberry is a very useful gizmo for geocaching. Internet access, detailed google maps, and paperless caching via various caching aps.
  8. I have one too and I like it... that being said, I likley won't be buying a Magellan next time I buy a GPS.
  9. That's a very valid point. Geocaching is fairly cheep to get started, but there is the option to enrich the activity by spending money if that suites you.
  10. Fun, insightful commentary about geocaching. Tips, stories, editorials... a mix is fine. Just so long as the author is able to write in a compelling way the subject is secondary.
  11. I personally consider religious pamphlets in the same category as advertisements in the cache. Inappropriate but not something to get too bent out of shape over. I've only found them a couple of times - but each time I do I trade for them and throw them out.
  12. You can search for 3 or 4 characters if you surround them in quotes.

  14. Yes, by "0 compression" I mean "0% lossy compression". Since this website doens't support NEF files I didn't think the distinction was relevant. This point is only relevant if your are somehow compelled at gunpoint to click on every image you see. I've addressed this problem several times already: Thumbnails are common practice and extrodinarly easy to implement. Again, forcing people to go off-site and upload the images is a bad business model and is much less user friendly and introduces a minor (but real) security problem from phishing attempts. I don't understand at all why there is so much resistance to better quality images on geocaching.com. There is not a single down-side that can't be easily bypassed with techniques used all over the internet.
  15. Food is good. Lots of resturaunts have back rooms that you can use for events for free provided the people who come buy food. The auction that was held at the Yuba City meet-and-greet was fun. The organizer gave everyone who attended a few tickets and there were a couple of neat geocoins and home made geocaches (filled with swag) and some other assorted things. If you just want to do the "hay lets hang out and talk about geocaching" kind of event, that's not a bad way to go. Or even, "Lets hang out, talk about geocaching and swap/discover coins!". That works too, if you collect them. Just think about the premise of the event before hand and most everything else will flow naturally.
  16. If you mean big, in terms of the number of pixles then... It's high(er) compression. However, the downside is loss of detail, compression artifacts and poorer overall technical quality. It's not alwase noticable however, but some factors (such as large red areas) can make an image less forgiving.
  17. Personally, I like to keep life fairly simple. Some people have tons of hobbies and responsibilities... If that makes you happy then great! But, not me.
  18. I'm shamelessly bumping this thread to bring the idea back into the global consciousness. Shame, I have none.
  19. Haha... clever. I'd put a few out for the sake of irony. Then again, being glass I'd worry they would break in a cache.
  20. Who did the what now? Actually, if there is an app out there that has not paid their royalties (or gotten permission otherwise) to use the API, then posts about them might get censored for that reason. However, I'm just speculating.
  21. Scroll up to the top of this page. "Options" will be right under the reply buttons. Ok, thanks. Man, that was obvious. It's a shock I can find a geocache... jesh.
  22. I don't think a PQs will ever return an archived cache.
  23. I have done a search everywhere I can think of for anything marked "Options", "Display" or anything that has "Standard" as an option. Allanon, can you be more specific?
