  1. You know, I think micros are a pain too. But, I have to say, Micros have never been suspected of being a bomb, in the urban areas. If they were, then they were thought of as a very, very small bomb. So maybe micros do have their place in geocaching.
  2. I agree, but I can't keep booties on my chocolate lab mix, that I rescued as a puppy from a shelter. I always have her wear her chest protector, however. It is flash orange, as you can see in the pic. It identifies her in case other people are around, plus it is ballistic nylon, keep the sticks and barbed wire from scratching her belly. Dogs bellies are very soft and tender. If you had a smaller dog, it has a handle to pick them up. But, Nissa the wonder dog weighs in around 80 pounds, now.
  3. I use dark green paint, then glue on camo burlap, shred it a bit. long lasting and very difficult to find... Rick
  4. I carry all kinds of things, including: SS wire to fix caches first aid kit CamelBak Pocket PC in Otter Case Garmin Vista Hiking staff baggies sunblock dive knife leatherman tool digital camera mosquito repellant sunglasses extra batteries compass flashlight magnetic rod inspection mirror (expanding rod with mirror on the end) Scripto mechanical pencils/extra pens/Sharpie markers wire cutters, especially when I take the dog, in case she gets into barbed wire. I wear a hunting/fishing vest, this way it distributes the weight. I put the CamelBak in the game pocket of my vest and it keep me cool Guess that is why my daughters tease me by calling me "Indy"
  5. Gee, I don't have any fantastic views, like some of you. One of mine, I like, is in honor of my grandfather, who immigrated from Iceland in 1878. It is called: Thorolfur's Treasure Another that has been well received and I had a lot of fun making: X doesn't mark the spot
  6. Here is Nissa the Wonder Dog and me, finding a cache. Rick (One of the Texas Vikings)
  7. I have placed quite a few puzzle caches. Here are a few. Most of the were well recieved, and the comments were positive. Oldies but Goodies X doesn't mark the spot Oil Movie Mania Geography Thorolfur's Treasure You can read some of the comments from the logs. "Movie mania" has stumped some people, because you can't Google a pic. Before GC stopped scripts, you couldn't copy and right click on the lyrics in "Oldies but Goodies" so you either had to write them down or sing them. "X doesn't Mark the spot" has gotten a quite a few good comments. Most people really like the idea. So much so, that I am going to do another one, on the other side of town, for the people on the west side. Have fun with the puzzles. I like the puzzle caches, as long as they are not too difficult. If you have any questions, email me... Rick, (One of the Texas Vikings)
  8. Here's how I did one of mine. I bought this at Walmart, more for the tube, than the tools. Glue a ring, to attach cable, so you can tether it to a tree. Spray it with dark green plastics paint Cover it with camo burlap Finished ! with the lid off. Then just wait for the emails of people trying to find it ! One of the Texas Vikings
  9. Are you familiar with the origin of the term "redneck", at least the popular origin. ? It comes from one of two reasons... 1: putting the reins of the mule around the back of your neck, while using both hands on the plow, thereby causing the leather reins to chafe your neck, making it "red" 2: the back of your neck getting sunburned as you work stooped over, hoeing and loosening soil in the fields. In either case, the "redneck" is caused by good old fashioned hard work.!!!!!!
  10. How about a "cadre" of cachers. Cadre: "A tightly knit group of zealots who are active in advancing the interests of a revolutionary party. or A member of such a group." Rick
  11. I would have to nominate G-Q for all the above reasons. Rick
  12. Do an Ebay search for "Wilderness Walkers". Great service and Hickory Walking sticks, with your name. Inexpensive. So inexpensive that I bought each one of the Texas Vikings one for Christmas last year. I always take mine, tie wrapped a holster of pepper spray on it, as we some feral dogs around.. And of course, the gators....
  13. Ha ! Difficult.....No...Impossible... All the doors are plug doors, which are larger on the inside than outside. That means, it acts as a plug and cannot be opened until the pressure is equalized. I often get a chuckle when on TV, they show some bozo trying to open a door, while in flight. Be kind of nice. if just once in awhile the writers would do a little background checking of facts.
  14. Nah.... the easy way is to pull my .45 auto out to show them that I am armed and they don't have to worry about me getting mugged..! If that doesn't work, just ask them "what they are doing there, is the donut shop closed" ??? All kidding aside. I think the brochure is best. Remember anyone can make an ID card. I was a Police Detective for 6 years and in Detective School, the first thing they taught us, is when being stopped by uniformed personel, do everything the nice Policeman tells you to do, until you get a chance to explain or identify yourself. Remember, bad guys are in a rush to either get away or get rid of the cop. So take your time, don't be in a hurry to explain, give the police a chance to observe you and decide if you are a threat. Always carry good identification. (driver's license, state id card, passport, etc)
  15. Psssst !! ....let's talk about him, while he's gone....!
  16. I was caching with Bobolu one day when he accidentally smacked me in the side of the face with his stick. I can vouch for the fact that a hiking stick can be a very effective weapon. I sometimes (depending on terrain or weather) use a nice Wilderness Walkers dogwood hiking stick I purchased from eBay. It's a great stick and has saved my butt on several occasions. I got one of their Hickory Sticks, too. I was so impressed, last year for Christmas, bought one for each of the Vikings. I think they had a clue, tho, even tho I wrapped them well. Anyone looking for a really high quality stick, with you name on it for free, Check out "Wilderness Walkers" in Ebay...Great service and great people. One add-on to my stick, was a holster holding pepper spray. I have run into feral dogs a couple of times and I would rather spray them than hit them in the head with a stick. I use my staff for balance, probing, depth of water, spider web removal, all kinds of things. Wouldn't cache without it. I have been seen caching in Walmart lot, with my staff...hahaha
  17. I usually tell them the caches have either gold bars or Kugerands in them...hahahaha Actually, I explained it to a co-worker about a year ago and now he gets up at 3:00am to hit a couple of caches on his way to work... Talk about hard core..... He also has over 300 in about a year. Not too shabby.
  18. Unless you check your caches hourly, how would you know ? 500 people could find it, sign the log and not log it online and the owner would never know. You want to participate, then participate. Don't like to log, then "Found it" is simple enough. What if you were a 6 year old who put out their first cache was waiting for someone to find it and 20 people did, but no one logged it... ? I don't say make it a rule.. but it is part of the game. As rules are part of any game. Ever play Monopoly ? Would the OP make as many moves as he wants, just because he feels free to do it ? So he doesn't want to log. So don't log, don't participate if that's what you want, snivel... take you GPSr and go home. or play cards or monopoly or even chutes and ladders, with no rules.... But, if you are going to play, then follow at least the guidlines. "Found it !" is enough. What you think is lame, may not be to someone else. Or maybe to a little kid. Unkind comments about how lame a cache is can be very hurtful. Type "found it" and then move on. Just my 2 cents.
  19. Okay....well,.... I'm going to put a screamer on a lamp post....nananana sorry....I'm bad, but I had to do it.... hehehehe
  20. I'm sorry, but the Federal Witness Protection System prevents me from answering that !
  21. Pretty sad when, in order to be famous, a member of your profession has to be blown to bits on their way to outter space. It's a shame it's not same for politicians. Would make election years much more interesting. "Both Politicians and diapers need to be changed often, and for the same reason"
  22. Not the greatest nor beautiful, but it makes me laugh.. My son in law carrying my 65 lb Chocolate Lab mix across the "A bridge too far" Cache. "Nissa the wonder dog and Shane"
  23. I change up, every once in awhile . I love this one... "Some people...." Also, I use: "Those of you who think you know it all, really irritate those of us who do, in fact know it all" "I want to die like my grandfather, quietly in my sleep. Not screaming like the other people in his car." And: "Do you walk to work or carry your lunch and if so, why not ?" or "42"
  24. Wow!...I did the same thing ! I started to sign my name as "Blue Power Ranger" (Must be Vuja Days "the feeling you have never been anyplace before")
