  1. My comment was specific to your assertion that there was no such thing as an accident. Your "opinion" is not supported by reality - that's what I was pointing out. There is nothing in the definition of the word "accident" (as used by the law) that abdicates blame, cause or responsibility. Did I say that there was anything that specifies this? No, I did not. What I said specifically was what it makes it sound like, to me. It sounds like taking a unfortunate event and making it sound like there was not a specific cause, such as it happened by accident, and softening the emotional impact of the description. Collision is more emotionally hard hitting, and a far better description by definition of the event. No collision happens just by accident, there are reasons for it happening in the first place. That is why, in my opinion, there is no such thing as a accident, no matter what definition you can find.
  2. That's an odd thing to say... ... ah yes... your statement was just wrong. Alright then. I will repeat, my opinion is not subject to argument. Say what ever you want, drive however you want, ignore what ever laws that displease YOU, it is still my opinion. Driving distracted is what causes carelessness and/or ignorance. Thus, in MY OPINION, there is no such thing as accident. Call it what it is, a collision, and don't sugar coat it by trying to make it sound like it happened without cause or blame.
  3. [rant] A small majority???? I can drive five miles , get passed by 4 people (who are speeding, I drive at or below posted speed limits) and I can see at least 1, if not 2 of them talking on a cell phone. I do not see how you can call it a small majority when innumerable collisions happen every day, causing untold amounts of injury, monetary losses, insurance claims etc etc etc..... and the cause is distracted driving. I say this because of the high numbers of people I personally see very time I drive doing things that will eventually put them into a collision event. Distracted driving is only a part of the pie, but doing so causes people to do other things that can lead to a collision, such as speeding, running signal lights, unsafe lane changes, etc etc etc... My state has enacted distracted driving laws, mainly to be able to cite drivers who have caused a collision by driving distracted. Notice my bold letters. I did that because there is NO SUCH THING AS A ACCIDENT! Every collision happens because of specific reasons, what ever the reason may be. It never ever happens "by accident". The preceding is my opinion, and is not subject to anyone's argument. [/rant off]
  4. I shall be there with cwby416 as part of Dumbledore's Army!! Now for the dumb question. This is my first Geoevent of any kind, I am a still "wet behind the ears" newbie. What kind of puzzles can one expect? I can envision college level cryptograms or trigonometry based numerical plotters, and I would be scratching my head going "HUH?" Am I in for a pound or what!
  5. Ahhh, so that's the trick that no one mentions when it comes to searching with less than 5 letter words. I hate to say it Chad, but you done let the cat out of the bag............ BTW, is that trick in the FAQ or stickied anywhere?
  6. I have seen a very similar thread on a astronomy forum a couple years ago. Someone new on the forum asking a question, and having the usual gamut of replies from the honest and forthright answer, to the "see this link" short reply. So a member starts to see the trend of repeated questions and answers, and makes a thread asking people to read the FAQ or use the search function. This starts the same debate seen here. What it all boils down to is that we newbies would much rather ask the question if we do not see the answer on the first one or two pages of the forum. We are trying to get started in this hobby, and we are trying to understand what those who have been in the hobby for some time take for granted. We are also looking for acceptance in this community, as well as sense of belonging. We do not have the circle of friends the "old timers" have, and are trying to figure out who are the good guys and who are the trolls. By making the short "read the FAQ's" or "see this link" reply, you are turning away someone who honestly asked what he felt was a valid question, and putting a big "I am a forum troll" label next to your name. If you do not think you can give the few minutes it takes to draft a politely worded reply answering the question to the best of your knowledge, why do anything? If these repeated questions are beginning to rub you the wrong way, it may be time to take a break from the forum and go out caching.
  7. The cache in question has been around since 2003, so I doubt if there is any agenda attached to it. Themed caches are OK, even if this one does not agree with your personal moral compass. It is not asking for anyone to partake in a socially unacceptable activity or belief. Just don't look for it.
  8. I will definitely CITO the GT (geotrash) when and if I get to do that.....
  9. UPDATE I sent a message to my local reviewer. This was after I did some research on the hides that the CO has done. Looks like he/she archives a cache as soon as there is any problem with it. If that is the case, and these two get archived, I have an idea for a single larger cache that would make better sense in this area. The reviewer has disabled the two caches and sent a message to the CO, we shall see what happens......
  10. I ran across two caches, hidden by the same CO, using the same container method causing the logs to get wet, and have been wet for quite some time. Numerous logs on both caches stating that the logs are beyond repair wet, and needs maintenance logs have been submitted more than once on one cache. This looks like it has been a ongoing problem ever since the caches were hidden. If the CO would replace the film canisters that has a tie wrap through holes punched into canister (no wonder it has wet logs!) with a bison, it would fix the issue. I filed a NM log on both, but I doubt if anything will happen, because if the history so far. I am tempted to submit a SBA, What would you do? (If you want to see the caches, look at my finds, up #16 and up #17)

Oregon has a better user interface with the touch screen. With the Colorado you have to scroll through everything using the wheel to enter field notes and the like.
  12. Dell has deals now and then. I got my Oregon 300 for $273 and change delivered, that was with a instant $150 rebate. Make sure you get your new GPSr from a authorized vendor so there are no problems if you have warranty issues. Most vendors on the "bay.com do not fall in this category.
  13. When you go after a FTF at one in the morning......
  14. It means that there are problems with the cache and the cache owner has disabled it, hopefully only until he repairs it. It may be enabled after the CO has had a look at it.
  15. Ok, so what exactly are zircon encrusted tweezers? One possibility: http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2483
  16. I know I have a stronger sense of direction than most, I have amazed the wife on many occasions. When I am traveling, by what ever means, I have this mental image of my location on a map in my head. The one exception is air travel. Getting off a plane for me is disorienting, and it takes me a while to get my directional senses together again. In a way I feel like I was teleported to a new location, and have lost my bearings to north etc.
  17. The screen brightness issue on the Oregon is a problem for some. However, you can adjust the back light brightness on the fly very easily. When in sunlight the trick is to point the screen toward the sun and the light from the sun will make the screen very readable. IMHO, people have made much ado about nothing on the screen brightness issue, I have no problem with it and make the adjustments needed at the time to make the screen readable for me.
  18. and do you have similar safety concerns for yourself, or is it just your fragile little wife? Ok....here is my input. I am Stephen's wife. I feel compelled to say something because I don't want people to take what Stephen says the wrong way or put it into incorrect context. I am 5' and weigh about 100 pounds. I am a small fry. "Fragile" would not be a term, however, that I would use to describe myself. When I was 15 years old I was sexually assaulted by two teenage boys. It was in my own home. It was by far the most devastating and difficult thing that I have ever had to endure in my life. I have been in stores where I have had my butt grabbed, a street where I have had someone corner me in and kiss me,(someone that I didn't know at all) and I have had a person stalk me when I was younger. I'm not a stranger to being a victim. I am not a stranger to the way the world works. I appreciate how my husband feels. He only wants me to be safe. I don't feel as if he is controlling me. It's like telling my children to look both ways before the cross the street. It's like telling them not to touch a hot stove. I only give them this direction because I love them and I wouldn't want them to ever get hurt. I think that everyone, regardless of their gender, needs to remain alert and aware of their surroundings. I don't think that is unreasonable to place restrictions or guidelines in order to prevent things from happening. To say that I am his "fragile little wife" is offensive to me. I know that my husband cares about me. I love geocaching. It is enjoyable and is a wonderful way to spend time together. It is a shame that we have to worry so much about violence. While I would love to take a quiet hike by myself sometimes or go for a walk with my ear buds in...I know that it wouldn't be the best thing to do. When I do have to go to the store alone or anywhere else alone I do carry protection with me. I know that I have to be responsible, alert, and realistic about what might happen. If you think about it, we might all be considered fragile. We're all capable of being broken or damaged. I don't think that we should hide in a shell or always be afraid of what could happen, however, I do think that we all should take precautions to stay safe and play the game wisely. My hubby really isn't trying to be controlling or overbearing. I know that his heart is in the right place. Neither one of us don't think that anyone is wrong in how they live their life or the decisions that they make. I think that I speak for both Stephen and myself when I express that we want all of our fellow cachers to be safe. Don't over think what is being said. Don't be so quick to judge. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." -Angie I will second that!
  19. Welcome to the obsession! Most will say to wait a bit to hide a cache. Get some finds under your belt to get a better sense of how, and where caches are typically hidden. Remember the ones that made you smile and how they where hidden, what type of camouflage diverted your attention at first but made sense when you found it. Find out what items are good to place in a cache, and what items to avoid. I am new to this, and I am in the process of putting my first cache together. To date I have 43 finds, and a few DNF's that I am still working on.........
  20. True, only to the ability to apply said intelligence......... While we are on the subject of acronyms, to briskly move this back on topic...... SYWL= Signed Your Waterlogged Log CCNR=Cache Container Needs Replacement FCFG=Found Cache Full of Garbage and on and on.........
  21. My online name is one I have used for many years. I dreamed it up back when I first signed up for America Off Line. I actually wanted 67RSman, but AOL would not allow a name start with numerical characters. The meaning, well, a picture is worth a thousand words I guess.
  22. Uber genius? Sorry could not resist.......
  23. If there is no log sheet and no cache ID number on the container, I am thinking you have a new Geocache container to hide unless you are lucky to have the owner come forward to claim it. Try to find the nearest caches, and make note if you DNF them on the log that it has possibly been muggled and have the CO look for it. If a CO can't find his cache, you could return the container, if it is his, to him.
  24. Well.......there is but you may be spending some bread........ Garmin Oregon DeLorme PN-40 among others........
  25. At the risk of starting a fire on the forum, that really bites! From what you described, I would say that it is 95% probable that it was snagged by a scumbag. Why people have no regard to others property is beyond me. I hope you can forgive and forget, that way you experience less stress over what is really a inanimate object. (expensive yes, but not what the earth revolves around) The 60Cx is a great little unit, no doubt about that. Do you want to go to paperless caching? Do Garmin products still hold favor for you? Has another manufacturers product caught your eye lately? Have you had a chance to try other GPSr's that friends use? We can get into a Ford is better than Chevy better than Dodge better than BMW........ type of exchange, or just agree that it is a personal choice that you are going to make, hopefully after some diligent research.
