  1. Don't know if anyone else is having this problem or not. Every e-mail that comes through GC.com has the subject line NONE. So when someone finds one of my caches instead of it saying OWNER: etc..... it just says NONE. That frustrating because honestly I have some notifications set that I don't check through my e-mail, but do it myself......but I want to know when it's a cache problem. Am I missing something?
  2. Got a Mac a couple weeks ago. Love it. I've read a bundle of threads on Mac Caching. No problem. I figured out how to get my GPS and Palm to see everything. Just a question about MacCMConvert. On my old PC I was using Swiss Army to transfer files to my Palm. It had a filter where it would decrypt the hints for me, so if I got stuck I didn't have to spend 10 minutes working it out. I don't see anything like that in MCMConvert. Am I missing it or does it just not exist?
  3. I would like to disagree. I helped create San-Fran-Cisco. For every puzzle there has to be a solution. You have to show the approver how it is solved. I could create an unsolveable puzzle. The point is that has to be solveable though. I can also say that I used to absolutely HATE puzzle caches. I mean HATE. The more I do however, the more my brain works. The more I struggle mentally with it. And remember that everyone plays the game a little differently.
  4. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! That's exactly what I was looking for. That helps a bunch. team kweb cakes
  5. well my wife's sister and fam. live near Beamsville/Grimsby area.....and we're staying the night there, but then on Saturday we're headed up toward the Ingersoll/Norwich area. We have some time to play with on Saturday before we have to meet up with other family, so I thought I could get some caching in. Thanks for the help so far, and the help that's coming!
  6. A couple months ago I posted here trying to figure out the best way to located caches will visiting the in-laws in Ontario. I was turned onto the very cool Town search through the Ontario Geocaching site. It's clearly been down for some time, but I was wondering if there was any way besides just searching postal codes to find caches. Geocaching.com maps works great in the US but sucks for Canada.....like if i'm driving along a road I can pan to see what caches are close.....how do you do that up there?
  7. You want people to trade more? How about putting worth-while stuff in the cache. I always trade evenly or better......if there's something in there. You can't make people take crap out of caches. I don't buy Happy Meals at McDonalds because I'm a big boy now and don't need cheap toys. Why would I take them out of caches, just because.......it just doesn't make sense. The last couple months I've been doing a lot of TNLNSL. Mainly because I've found so many caches that are great caches......but have horrible stuff inside. That doesn't mean I haven't worked at getting the cache. I've hiked a mile in to it......I still believe I've done the cache.....even if I TNLNSL. Maybe the responsiblity of having good swag in the cache isn't the cachers.....but the person who put the container out there. So you can call me lazy. You can say I'm not really caching......whatever. Until I find something worth my while in there, I'll keep TNLNSL. Thank you very much.
  8. I live in Northwest PA. Lovely trails around here. Any help I can be let me know!
  9. Greatings brothers and sisters to the north! Couple of questions I was hoping you could help me with since I can't seem to find the answers by doing a search etc. Mainly, my wife is Canadian and we haven't been up to see the family in awhile and are headed that way in the next couple weeks. I'm trying to get some caching in while we're there. My problem is finding out what caches are close to what towns and roads etc. Buxley and GC.com have a little to be desired. HERE is a link to a caching/map page for caches in the Czech Rep. Is there anything along these lines for Canada? I guess that was only one major question. Thanks in advance for your help.
  10. I've done a ton of cemetary caches, helped another cacher hide one and I'm currently working on two others myself. I love cemetaries....as does my wife. There is so much history wrapped up in cemetaries. If they are well researched, these can be not just a cache, but a history lesson as well. A trip to the local historical society or some time at the library can bring a wealth of knowledge that you can share with other cachers. To me the best caches incorporate some history, learning, or sharing some new thoughts along with the cache. So obviosly I say yeah. On the flip side, you also need to respect those that are buried there and their families. I would never hide a cache on a stone itself or in anyway disrespect the cemetary. A tree or shrub inside or just outside of the cemetary itself is the best solution I believe. That's my 2 pennies
  11. I have a 5 foot stave that I use. You can get them at a hardware store or lumber place. I've sanded the handle area a bit.....(too many splinters while caching). I wouldn't go on a hike without it. Not just for the obvious use, but there are so many times when it's come in handy.
  12. thanks a bunch.....i'll give this a go and let you know how it turns out!
  13. Ok you guys are talking WAY over my head. I need it in plain English. I don't have Mapcreate for my ifinder so it won't gobble up the csv file. I have no idea what reidster is saying, but it would seem he is proposing a solution....I just don't know what that solution is. Pretend I'm an idiot.....which isn't far from the truth it would seem.......is there an easy way to do this.....or should I just resign myself to typing in the digits forever?
  14. I actually looked a bit before I got my phone and nothing local was available. When the lady at the shop said that my phone had a GPS installed.....I was like....hey can I use it too? or is just so the government can track my movements......she said....you know you're the first person to ask me that question......and no I don't think you can use it....it only works one way. Now why would I ask such a question?
  15. OK I found a somewhat related post from awhile ago, but it really stopped short of answer my questions so I'll have another go at it. Basically what I'd like to take the geocaching .loc files put them on a card in one form or another and then put them into my ifinder. I know that EasyGPS can't do it. The other program suggested is ExpertGPS. While this is available on a trial basis and I haven't given it a go.....simply because once the trial runs out it costs me 60 bucks to buy the program. You may call me cheap....but for 60 bucks I'll punch the numbers in myself. I've been toying with GPSBabel....but can't seem to get it to work quite right. I download a waypoint....then I know I need to transfere the file type. from reading over things....it would seem that I need it to go to "comma seperated values"???? or something like that......but I really have no clue what I'm doing. Can anyone help? I'm really ready to just pack it in
  16. Stary stary.... I figured out the city easily enough. Found webcams.....can't figure out how to control them. Can't read German. oh well. time for a hike in the woods i guess.
  17. THANKS SOOOOO Much for the Czech site help. I'm headed there in Feb. for about 10 days. I've been looking all over for such a site! Thanks a ton.
  18. I know I read this exact type post not too long ago but after spending nearly half and hour searching for it I can't locate it. So I apologize ahead of time for the reptitive nature of this post. There is a local cache that cachers have been complaining needs maintenance BAD since July. One cacher replaced the log himself. Others have said it's just full of water etc. I've e-mailed the person who hid it regarding the cache. It's a great cache in a great place. It doesn't seem that this person is caching anymore or really cares about keeping up with his caches. What to do?
  19. I've really been thinking a lot about the rating system lately. I'm not sure if we need a new category or expand the categories we have to 10 stars or what....but it seems that something is lacking. One of the bigger problems is that it's self-rated. So if I think I hid something really well I could give it a 4 star, but everyone finds it in 10 minutes.....it's really not a 4 star. 5/5 should be reserved for the hardest of the hard......yet there are 5 star caches out there that are challenging, but doable in an afternoon hike. It just seems as if something is missing from the rating system. Perhaps a user rating category. So that when you find the cache.....you can put in what you think the ratings should be. I've done some hikes that were WAY tougher than what they were rated.....and I've done some micros that were way easier than what they were rated. Maybe a category that would reflect the finders thoughts of the cache. AGain this would be pretty sketchy at best as well......since each finder has a different experience.....but I would think that over the long haul it would average out to be about right.
  20. I agree with DeskJockey. They're called Monkey Balls. My mom puts them all around the outside of her house. They keep spiders away. Seems to work as far as I can tell. She has much less spider action than I do!
  21. a caching friend artbegotti did almost all of his first 20 or so without a GPS. He uses various maps and then manually figures out possible areas. He's surprisingly pretty acurate.
  22. I did one a couple weekends ago that's definately underwater but doesn't require scuba gear. Nice cache. Really hard to find and retrieve....but possible without going in! http://tinyurl.com/3poz4
  23. sorry man, my wife reminded me of a meeting I'm suppose to lead (oops) tonight. How long are you in the area? Where are you from?
  24. Times, give me times. I'm not in St. Mary's but I'm only about an hour away. I haven't cached the area yet either (can you believe it?). I need to check with my wife, but I might consider coming down.
  25. Recently I was driving in town past a cache I had done a while back when I saw two ladies kind of looking suspicious (though trying hard not to). So I drove around the block and parked 50 feet from them so as not to look threatening. After observing them for a little while to make sure they were cachers....I got out of my car and approached them. The obvious...."are you guys caching?" seemed to work. They laughed because they saw me coming and were afraid! HA
