  1. Somebody owns or manages most property...I would think that would be the first place to start as you would need permission from them first....after you were done it would leave quite a mess... I wonder if it would be better to hide a cache somewhere on an existing paint ball range and then you would know what you are in for when you go hunting....you would need to be paintball prepared..... I am pretty sure it would get very few "finds" dik http://www.dikcabeza.com/cache
  2. I know that there is an official "travel bug" that is tracked online through geocaching.com.... It also seems as though there may be one or two other obscure "trackable" items that are also "semi-official" Are there any members that have their own trackable traveling items that can be found on personal websites other than geocaching.com. If so can you provide links to those pages so I can see what others are doing. dik http://www.dikcabeza.com
  3. I went back and "edited" my log and it now has the correct date. Not sure what happened but I do know for sure that I had it correct the first time I did it but for whatever reason it defaulted to the current date. Thanks for telling me about your hubby..... dik http://www.dikcabeza.com
  4. I found my first cache this past Saturday (5-29) (yeah!!) Well I didn't get a chance to get to the computer to log it in until Monday (5-31) It did ask me the "log date" and I changed it to the date I found it which was the 29th. Once I entered my find it still showed up as the 31st. Did I do anything wrong? Is there any way for it to show when you actualy found the cache rather than when you actually logged the find? I am going to be going on vacation in 2 weeks and I plan on hunting down serval caches while I am gone; however, when I get home and log them in it will seem as though I found them all in one day???? dik http://www.dikcabeza.com

    I Bought It

Ok....so I did it. I bought the Garmin etrex $100 at REI. I did notice however if you buy at staples.com they are $99 and you can print a $20 rebate coupon. Of course I was too impatient to wait the 3 to 8 days for shipping. Anyway I expect to log my first find this weekend....... Thanks for all your help!! dik p.s. hopefuly i wont be asking to many more dumb questions
  6. I see that if I purchase an entry level GPS such as a Garmin etrex or a Magellan 315 that the accuracy will be about 3 meters or so (15'ish) If the person who placed the cache was using a similar GPS then this could compound the problem. Is this ever a problem when searching for a cache? dik
  7. I read that two decent "starter" GPS devices would be..... Magellan 315 & Garmin Etrex Looking on Ebay they seem to be similarly priced. What is your opinion on these units? Is there another that I should consider? Is there a secret place to get them that is cheaper than Ebay? Are there any options that I should be getting with my initial purchase? Thanks, dik
  8. I sure hope you guys don't mind a bunch of questions, 'cause I'm sure I will have a lot of them!! Ok....I already found my first cache but I was not a member yet so all I did was search it out and confirmed it was there. I am going to go back as a member and log something in the book. What is the protocol for notifying that you have found a cache? Do you always leave a comment on the page? Do you sometimes leave a comment? I am going to have a lot of fun with this. I am going to create page on my website that will be dedicated to my caches. dik
  9. So I read the guidlines and it talks about not placing a cache when you are on vacation, this could be a reason for not having your request approved. I own a vacation home about 175 miles away and we go there very often (twice a month) In this area there are miles and miles of great hiding spots. Will the fact that I have a home there and that I go often be an acceptable excuse for me leaving a cache so far from my "weekday" home? I am a newbie and have not as of yet left or found a cache. Thank you, dik
